I've been freed from Slack! Such a relief. I told the new head of our research center that my variation of ADHD is entirely incompatible with Slack. I was afraid that my colleagues would think Thorn is being a pain in the butt and demanding special treatment. Turns out the new head of the center also hates Slack and finds it unusable, and it came up during our online meeting (that I had to leave early to teach a class). It was agreed they would go back to email and stop using Slack entirely.

Today I had to look up "DHH" (It stands for "David Heinemeier Hansson," if like me you are in the dark) and found myself trying to learn about things like "Ruby on Rails" (which are no doubt well-known to a lot of peopple who hang out on Mastodon), and the long-and-short of it is that I have to abandon my dream of owning a Framework laptop because they support fascism, racism, and transphobia. I also learned, to my horror, that a LOT of programmers are apparently very comfortable with fascism.

Substack is proud of hosting serial rapist Andrew Tate. Why is anyone who's not a Nazi still on there? Why? I can sort of understand the "I can't give up X/FB/IG because that's where all my people are" argument, but Substack literally just hosts blogs/newsletters. You can go anywhere. You can switch to Ghost.

Here is your regular reminder that cute pseudo fonts used to force text in social media posts do things it wasn't meant to do make posts unreadable to #Blind and Low-Vision users who rely on screen readers. I have installed #FreeTube on my Linux and Mac machines, and installed the #LibRedirect extension in #Vivaldi, and I love it. I click on a #YouTube link, and instead of YouTube opening, the link opens in FreeTube and plays without ads and without a need to sign in to anything. If you want to stop being surveilled by YouTube/Alphabet, I strongly recommend this.

Considering how often the NYT in particular does this, despite being frequently called out for it, I can only conclude that it is a very deliberate choice. It's not as if journalism schools don't teach about how the passive case is used to deflect and evade. So when a journalist who has graduated from a journalism school and possibly even won a Pulitzer uses the passive case this way, they do so intentionally to deflect and evade.

I was shocked that a very progressive colleague (a university professor, younger than me, and incidentally USian) had never heard of the environmental impact of LLMs nor of the fact that LLMs trample copyrights. All they knew was the bit about LLMs making things up. They said they themself use LLMs to "help with writing," and seemed to want me to assure them that that was ethical, "setting aside the environment and copyright." I responded honestly that I couldn't "set those aside." #LLM

@annierau This is the most Wikipedia thing ever. People who have never edited Wikipedia (or only done it on a hit-and-run basis) have no idea how “We-should-err-on-the-side-of-caution” a lot of these editors are. You could refer to William Shakespeare as an "acclaimed playwright,” and within an hour an editor would add a “citation needed" warning to the word “acclaimed.”
