As someone who is both extroverted and the scheduler/wrangler/cat herder for the overwhelming majority of my friendships, I genuinely think in a parallel universe people like me should receive fat government grants for our hands on work to reduce isolation and loneliness. I am 100% serious.

Literally considering applying to this out of morbid curiosity/for the bit. This is 100% a weird tech bro Douglas Rushkoff scenario, right? https://www.lianza.org.nz/professional-development/vacancies/curator-private-end-of-the-world-library/

has "the last chopper out of Nam" been a Discourse Shorthand going further back than the last couple years? For anyone not in the loop, you often see it around discussion of modern dating, often from smug married people who are like "glad I caught the last chopper out of Nam" or frustrated single people like "everyone normal and fun isn't on the apps because they caught the last chopper out of Nam"

The article I’m still waiting for someone to write is about how dog owners receive what amounts to public subsidies for the care and keeping of their particular pet (by taking their dogs into public spaces but especially dog parks subsidized with public money) but there is no similar kind of subsidies for other forms of pet ownership. https://www.curbed.com/article/dogs-public-places-new-york-city.html?utm_source=nymag_app_article_share

This description of Midwestern state school upper middle class cultural norms is so spot on. I was in this class until my divorce (so now I’m in the strange position of being downwardly mobile as I’m barely making any money at the moment but have the retirement accounts of someone who was married to a high income earner for nearly a decade) and still have family and friends solidly within this class demographic. https://open.substack.com/pub/drunkwisconsin/p/the-state-school-upper-middle-class?r=sx43&utm_medium=ios

I have a 2% cash back credit card that deposits a periodic amount in a Fidelity brokerage that I use just for messing around with interesting investing products (my actual retirement accounts are elsewhere). For religious reasons I don't really fuck with gambling or betting, so it scratches that particular itch. I only have mine invested in vaguely ESG and women-led index funds/ETFs/mutual funds and its 1Y returns beat the S&P 500 and DJIA by more than 10% lmao

Often times negotiations with clients/dates/friends/whatever can be extremely tedious and onerous and scary but one of the things that being in a union for many years taught me is the power of negotiations for establishing boundaries, mutual obligation, and clear rules of engagement. Not to constantly be in peak Capricorn mode but there is a lot to be said for learning to respect, and sometimes even enjoy, the process of negotiation.

If you carry business insurance and your business is making way less money than it used to, it’s not a bad idea to call your agent or broker and see if you can get a lower premium. I had to call mine recently for other reasons and the topic of my lower revenue came up, the representative was nice enough to run the numbers and it ended up shaving a few hundred dollars off my upcoming policy renewal.

Still thinking about ways to keep SAA vibrant and healthy after attending #saa23 as one of three GLAM conferences I attended in one month. One thing that I think SAA could do to improve programming all around is to *require* panels to have archivists from different sectors. No more all-academic panels. I’m super proud that the panel i chaired had a mix of local gov, university, museum, and self-employed speakers, and the turnout was just as diverse for who came to hear us speak.

Hey this is a general friendly ambient reminder for everyone at #saa23 that a lot of us have had many dramatic life changes since most of us last saw each other, whether it’s our career path or relationships or visible or invisible changes to our bodies. Sometimes seeing those changes from others can trigger one’s own insecurities and fears and this week is a great opportunity to operate from a place of compassionate curiosity instead of feelings-driven interrogation 💚

"I have come to think of academic librarians as akin to the engineers who maintain the electrical grid. Without them, many university systems would go dark. But colleges increasingly treat librarians like convenience-store clerks waiting to help faculty members and students at their points of need or impulse. Why is it that academic librarians are rarely viewed by their faculty colleagues as experts, collaborators, and equals?" https://www.chronicle.com/article/the-librarians-are-not-ok
