Guess what I've been doing for years? I start writing an e-mail address that starts with a B in my mail client and it'll instantly bring up bug.report@sternpinball.invalid.

Today we've been working on the score reels, they were initially disassembled and put back together, but they still needed some switch adjustments and love.

Seeing an EM game giving score from a fast moving spinner is such a satisfying thing to look at. We found ourselves shooting at the 100pts spinner just for the fun of it.

Technically, a lot of stuff goes on in the background. Every playfield switch of the same value are connected to a specific relay, which are 100, 1000 and 10000pts in this game. The energised relay then goes through a player unit, which selects whose score reels we're advancing. Ultimately it makes the tiny coil pull inside the score reel. The coil there has a switch that tells the relay that the score is now awarded and the relay can let go.

Why the relay? The score reels need relatively clean pulse to advance. A bad or too brief switch contact could leave the score reel's coil half-way and thus not advancing the reel. The relay again is easily tripped and it guarantees the score reel advances one step. There's also satisfying sparks when all this happens!

The manipulation in big company products is so devilish at times. Here's Google business management. It constantly hounds me that there's something missing from my business profile.

You may think to yourself: maybe it's just some address information or something? Maybe a fresh profile picture?

No. It's missing me spending advertising money so I could cash in their 400€ free ads offer.

It obviously tries to play on peoples' completionist instinct to fill that missing 12% of my "profile strength".

EDIT: It says you can't complete your business profile without using Google Ads, but if there's a way, it's not obvious. There's nothing in the 3 dots nor the link it pushes in the blue button.

When working with a fringe hobby such as mine and using a 3D printer, I often get comments like "Isn't that part like $19? Why bother fiddling with a 3D printer". While technically true, I'm not really after the money saving angle here. A pinball machine has a LOT of parts and owning over 30 of them means pretty insane parts stock. What usually breaks or wears out is very well known and a lot of it is compatible with a wide range of machines, such as coil sleeves and rubbers. Those I buy. But then there are unique parts, that were used only in a specific machine. Often those parts can be found with a web search, but they're not in stock anywhere or they'll take up to a month to arrive in this corner of the world. There's also cases where a tiny plastic part can fail, but you can only buy the whole assembly for $200. Being able to just print one means the game is back in the action often in hours and at least in my designs I don't just clone the parts, I also try to see why they break and make them sturdier and easier to install. I also hope more people would be inspired to share theirs, so there'd be a printable parts library out there when needed. #3dprinting #cad #restoration

Today I need to make this. Road Show pinball machine has a ball lock mechanism, where the locked balls are kept in a scoop and released one by one with a solenoid.

This got stuck and my investigation revealed the plastic part was now missing the collar that prevents it from going too far. The collar also keeps the return spring in place.

This is AFAIK unique part to this game and as such I don't have it in stock. Unlike the Elvira's 3D printed bracket earlier that was a temporary fix, this one could be easily 3D printed and expected to last.

Hello people. I'm Ari, although I'm better known by my nick APz or apzpins in the social media. This is my pinball and retrogaming account.

I'm an IT guy by day, dedicating my free time to keep #pinball alive. My hobby has turned from owning a single game at home to an #arcade full of them over the years. Originally a very active tournament player, but in the past years I've been leaning more and more to the restoration and maintenance of the games. I especially love early solid state pins.

I'm a very #DIY -spirited person, often having to come up with creative ways to fix something that's been long obsolete. I do a lot of #3dprinting, tabletop #cnc and #laser'ing, among other things.

In addition to pinball machines, I'm into mechanical and video arcade games, #retrocomputing, owning plenty of machines like Commodores, Ataris, PCs and old servers.
