You can assume higher for other audiences. I agree wholeheartedly about the importance of keeping statements plain, especially in works of persuasion. E.g., avoid overused common expressions, even if they sound “plain” to your ears. Say what you’re saying directly.

@rhys@mastodon.rhys.wtf I’m not sure what a chud is, but if they constantly whine about “woke” and “DEI”, then I feel you. I just finished watching the first two episodes, and am loving it. I didn’t expect to. I was afraid it would be “Starfleet’s Creek 90210”, but it has a good story and 3-dimensional young characters. Discovery’s last two seasons felt bleak by comparison (though I’m still a fan), and I couldn’t even get halfway into “Section 31” before giving up, but “Academy” is a joyous surprise so far.

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net I just did an experiment. I looked on the app for a local big box retailer here in Tennessee. If I am only worried about obtaining a smartphone and laptop computer, lowest prices I can find, I can walk out of the store today with both for about $280 plus taxes, which would probably bring the total to about $315. That is an unlocked Motorola Android phone ($130) and a very basic Intel N150 laptop ($150). I could when walk out with a smartphone for as low as $50 if I don’t mind it locked to some prepaid wireless provider. I’m too used to my 4-year old iPhone and 8-year old business laptop to do so, but I *could*.

I woke up this morning to hear that Trump had made a policy proposal in his #SOTU, basically matching up to $1000 on a 401k-like investment account for workers with no access to such an account. I’m not necessarily against this idea. I’ve always disliked Trump, but this is the first time he’s directly messed with my quality of life. I’m downstream of both of these coal plants, so it affects my air quality. Even if they have good scrubbers in the steam towers, this is horrible from a CO2 emissions standpoint. He had to actually fire 2 TVA administrators and replace them to accomplish this idiocy. My employer once sponsored me to work full time for a few years making code contributions to an open source project. The active contributors, at the time, were a New Zealander lead (🇳🇿), someone in Australia (🇦🇺) who IIRC was actually Dutch (🇳🇱), and myself (🇺🇸). Now, with my country’s descent into bullying nationalism and fascism, I fear a collaboration like that would be impossible, at least for me and others here. #foss

I remember how sad I was to see in a (physical!) newspaper an article reporting her death. How many more stories might we have had? My favorite series of hers: the Xenogenesis Trilogy
