I'm a pro at TZ changes for beginning & end of a conference, but that usually involves a long ✈️, etc.

#SCaLE is only event I attend w/ TZ change on the penultimate day of the event! (California entered Daylight Savings Time (#DST) 7 hrs ago.)

Speculating: I bet this isn't by coincidence. I bet the Pasadena Convention Center gives discounts for booking DST weekend! If so, ingenious move, @socallinuxexpo@social.linux.pizza!

I've traveled worldwide promoting #FOSS & #copyleft for 30 years.
> 2 million miles BIS (Butt In Seat) — 1.3mil on #Delta.

But today I ponder hotels. I've stayed at 100s of hotel worldwide of all sizes — from “dives” to (very occasionally) 5⭐ — & from B&Bs to 25 floors w/2 towers.

In 30 years,only *twice* could I not get 🚿 hot water (at least after 30-80 seconds).

Is there some solved temp/#OfRooms/liter equation for this magic to happen all over the world? Esp. at peak 🚿⏰?

#Microsoft isn't satisfied w/ just the space they paid for though: They are giving away bouncy light-up balls & have decided to regularly block the common area in front of our booth to demo their balls.
I give them credit for finding a new way to embrace, extend & extinguish.

Painfully, there was a way I had to help tonight that didn't let me avoid the disaster that my country is. I received an alert there was potential #ICE activity in my neighborhood (my city has an NGO that runs an alert system). ICE kidnapped someone in my neighborhood tonight. I was glad that about 15 ppl answered the alert.

The mental health toll of #Trump & his nihilist cronies — while small when compared to the murders they commit — is nonetheless palpable damage to all.

Since our Constitutional right “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” has effectively been suspended, I'll focus exclusively on my #FOSS work. My whole adult life, I never outright ignored world news,but for my own mental health I must — at least until I've an idea on how to start a non-violent revolution.

I often have trouble sleeping. ∃ plenty to keep us awake worrying, but my specific job is to worry about software freedom & rights.
I then play old movies as distraction— often Coen brothers' films. Their central theme: how ordinary people come to do extraordinary actions — good & bad.

“Sometimes there's a man…I won't say a hero, 'cause what's a hero?…but sometimes there's a man…he's the man for his time & place; he just fits right in there.”
I always have wanted to fit right in there in #FOSS.

Installing #Debian 13 (trixie) on 2017-era laptop. Hardware is fine, but was built when #UEFI was barely supported yet,but had become standard.

I struggled to boot after install (yes, I used UEFI installer).
TIL

💡 Old BIOS's have UEFI/LEGACY/ BOTH setting w/ a CSM Support Bit. Chose UEFI ONLY & CSM NO.

💡old UEFI NVRAM is *tiny*. Mine was full. Deleting dump-* data wasn't enough. I had to delete 2 esoteric Boot options (such as IDE FDD 🤣) to even change another entry.

I *highly* recommend taking the time, when attaching a new drive (be it USB, NVME, or whatever), to do the following:

# udevadm info -n

& find some unique things about to put an entry like this in /etc/udev/rules/my-drives.rules :

KERNEL=="nvme*", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{ID_SERIAL}=="<SERIAL_FROM_INFO>", SYMLINK+="disk/by-bkuhn/name_of_disk"

& physically label that disk with name_of_disk.

I learned more valuable stuff in humanities courses than in CS, frankly.
Boothby taught my 1991 honors level introductory course in the classic philosophy (pre-Socratic to Aristotle).

2 things I apply *every day* in my work in #FOSS politics:
* for the pre-Socratics, mythology & philosophy were intertwined. the myths were parables to understand truths, & inseparable
* Socractic Epiphany is central to moral thought: you become less sure the more you learn.

The latter dominates AI issues rn.

His name is Donald Trump.” This statement contains multitudes b/c #TruthSocial is a fork of #Mastodon. Initially, $DJT violated the #AGPLv3, but AFAIK they now comply with the license.
