My January dive recap is live. I only managed two dives, but they were both with my new OM-1 photo rig! Check the blog for the recap and (most importantly) pictures.

We got hit with yet another large storm, this time with wet, heavy snow and lots of wind! I don't know exactly how much we got due to drifting and a bunch of snow hanging around from the last large storm, but it was a pile.

Blackcap basslets are common in the Caribbean, especially on walls and overhangs. They often swim upside down as if the overhang was the ground. I found this one swimming around right side up in the Bahamas.

Norman's Cay in the Bahamas was a base of operations for the Medellin drug cartel until it was raided and shut down in the 1980s. One the relics left behind is this plane that didn't make it to land and crashed into the shallow water nearby.
This site is about 20 feet deep and jam-packed with fish and critters, so it's a nice dive stop on a Bahamas trip. We had 9 divers about to splash, so I jumped in first and kicked over to get some clean shots before the group arrived. This was only my third dive with the fisheye lens, so I spent a lot of time playing with composition and lighting. I like how this one came out!

Since I'm fresh off a dive trip, I figured it was a good time to write up a blog post on liveaboard diving and some tips and tricks I've learned over the years. Feel free to give it a read and drop any additions, comments, or questions you have below!

Yellowtail snapper are common in the Caribbean, but I felt like they were following me on this trip. Every time I stopped to take a photo, I looked over my shoulder and there was a snapper watching what I was up to.

I was looking in the sand for some other tiny slugs when I spotted this little leaf sheep (Costasiella ocellifera). It was about the size of a grain of rice and I didn't really have time to nail the focus as the group was moving on. Still super cool to see!

These tiny cleaner gobies are super common in the Caribbean, but I liked the textured background of the brain coral. They tend to hop around the coral as I approach, but this one stayed put nicely. They form "cleaning stations" where larger fish stop by to get their teeth, skin, and gills cleaned. This is a great arrangement for both sides as the cleaner fish get a meal of dead skin and parasites while the customer gets a nice cleaning.

I'm 6 dives into my week on Bahamas Aggressor II so I've got a bunch of pictures coming. Here's a sneak peek at a cool critter: the neck crab! This one is hanging upside down from a green sponge and is well camouflaged. They hang out into the water and grab stuff as it passes by. Very cool!

Spotted at Logan Airport in Boston. Guess where this flight is headed? 🏈 (I'm headed south, just walking by 😀)

My phone has been buzzing about solar flares and these monster sunspots did not disappoint! This image was captured at 1pm on February 4th.

I took the rare break in the clouds as an opportunity to get my first moon image in awhile. This image was captured on January 27th with the moon 74% waxing. Lovely, as always!

Alright, fellow astrophotographers. Let's see your snow fort observatories! Here's mine up here in snowy Massachusetts, USA. We got about 18 inches of snow last weekend and there's no thaw in the forecastable future.

While I was waiting around for some aurora activity earlier this week, I played around with the OM-1's live composite mode while using my fisheye lens. I've made star trail images before, but it's way more convenient to do it in camera rather than having to stack in post-processing. The clouds created a surreal effect as they moved across the frame. This image is incomplete, as a long exposure would have shown better trailing, but I like the way it came out.

THREE (!!!) long-eared owls resting together as the sun goes down. I was walking around a new area and heard some songbird calls I wasn't familiar with. I was looking in this dense thicket to identify the source and then spotted the silhouette of one of the owls. I was super excited at my luck and when I moved to get a better angle, I noticed the other two. Photography was extremely challenging because of the thick brush, but I managed to keep my distance and find some OK angles. The best ones were when I was holding the camera over my head and using the rotating screen facing downward to focus and compose. For most of the shots, I had to use manual focus because the camera had a hard time separating the birds from the branches.
These images are a heavy crop with Lightroom denoise as I was not particularly close, only had a 40-150mm lens (80-300mm FF equivalent), and the light was fading as sunset approached.

Take a ride along with my telescope as it tracks the winter sunrise low across the sky.
