Again, you're not spending the day doing laundry. It just dries on its own while you do other things. I can understand being frustrated if someone's bogarting the dryer all day. To solve wrinkles you crumple the clothes up repeatedly until there are so many wrinkles it's all continously wrinkled and so it isn't wrinkled. 😇 CC: @mikemccaffrey@pdx.social @hellomiakoda@pdx.social

A wedge issue is something people vehemently disagree on, that won't affect the bottom line of big business one way or the other. Basically a politician's wet dream. You being right doesn't matter. Only whether you cannot reconcile with the people who disagree with you, and whether or not the end result is going to make rich people richer more slowly. So I talk about human rights, and just redirect people who insist that trans rights are someow being made special by the evil communists back to talking about human rights. I don't know that it's a solution though. There might be no way to resist being controlled and turned against each other via wedge issues. 😣

Oh well yeah, just don't frame it as "Dead parents are great. We should go back to the good old days, which totally happened, when people died once they outlived their usefulness." I think ending a joyless life is a good idea. If we did that, then I wouldn't be here to bother you about the subject!

Eugenics is a pretty good indicator of fascism. I'm just speculating though. I do think it's very trashy to suggest that Back in the Day people just dropped dead like they were 1850's residents of London. Elder care is one of the defining aspects of humanity, what makes us human. Denying it is therefore, antihuman.

You can't compromise with fascists. They are the compromisers, saying a sensible and totally NOT extermination of the inferior and degenerate is going to happen and everyone is going to love it. They'll push until it's a compromise between fascism, and more fascism. The only defense is to stop them, to say no, fuck you. Anyway the reality is we're not prolonging life at all cost. We're just caring for the elderly, and it is a bad thing when they sicken and die before that. It is a bad thing when you sicken and die, even if you're saving people the trouble of caring for you. The article writer indicates it is not a bad thing, a talking point fascists have used again and again to push their individualist might-makes-right fanatical slave doctrine.

Ah, theguardian.com, engaging in historical revisionism rewriting history to ignore all the extended care for aged parents we've been doing since humanity came into existence, so that they can justify mass extermination of the weak and elderly. Classy.

They shouldn't be making any money at all, because we shouldn't be allowing them to use AI to scam people and steal attribution. But that has nothing to do with the ethical nature of training sets. They're not doing anything to you. They're learning from you. It's their ability to deceive uhh "customers" that does the damage. You may be privileged enough not to have been hurt by the repression in the name of intellectual property, or you may have been hurt in ways you're not aware of, but it really does harm to all our creativity. I don't like having my brain programmed to only be able to imagine copyrighted content. We can fight AI without getting in bed with the devil and turning on the people trying to save us. There are plenty of reasons to get rid of it that don't involve raising outrage that our publisher is not being given exclusive publishing rights by having the police attack other publishers.

Ehhhh, I get what she's saying, but bullies know they're not supposed to hit other kids. You have to either take away their reason for bullying, or stop them from bullying, or both. They won't be like "You're not supposed to hit other kids? Woah!! I had no idea!" Also more wealth has been unjustly stolen by big companies sending cease and desist letters for intellectual property violations, than any computer copying someone's publically published work without permission. When you're on the same side as the people crushing your creativity, it's time to reevaluate some things. I don't know Mo Ryan though, or why grifter techbro bullies would care what she approves of. So maybe it's a bigger deal than I'm aware. I definitely feel like I'm being outvoted and stampeded.

Just because the protocol was written in the 80's doesn't mean it couldn't have used a different number than 140... seems unlikely they were that forward thinking, but BBSes had been around a while, and I imagine they had their eye on that. Even that limit was totallly arbitrary. They were like "We got a few extra bits in the packets, so sure why not? And they'll pay 10 cents a pop! 🍭" The character limit was always about draining our attention, keeping us too busy to organize, and rewarding us for shitposting. I'm joking, yes. And also criticizing those servers. But honestly, I don't like writing super long posts. I feel like I'm ignoring people and not letting them get in a word edgewise. When I consider ranting about something in long form, I try to write a little bit at a time, and give people a chance to respond before writing more. Make it a conversation instead of an essay. Or sometimes if I just don't care I'll splurg it all out and hope that nobody bothers reading that shit. Stop people from using money. That's about the only thing that can do it. No paying rent, no paying back debts, no paying taxes, no paying for stuff at the store, no paying for land, it's all part of the scam. I don't have much hope we'll ever achieve this... but the solution is pretty obvious.

Steam engines at scale require large numbers of ordinary people to operate. If those large numbers of people give the middle finger to the small numbers of rich people, what are they going to do? Pay with the money that isn't worth anything, since they can't gatekeep access to the machines? The answer is they get the military to go kill you all, until you submit to slavery. That really is all that it is. The day the large numbers of ordinary people in the military give the rich the middle finger is the day that the rich lose absolutely everything. Hardly any rich people operated a steam engine at all! Just nitpicking, but technically the reason every technology since the steam engine has benefited only the rich is purely political. As in, it's legal for them to benefit, and not legal for anyone else. That's all that's causing it: people, police, laws. It's that way because people have decided to make and keep it that way. Admittedly the absolutely insane wealth, information and power inequalities in the world only skyrocketed once the Internet was created. But is it correlation, causation or coincidence? The Internet enabled Google, Amazon, Facebook, but really those guys were using the same techniques that worked to screw up brick and mortar business in the 1800's. We just had laws to prevent it, and for some reason people started lying that didn't apply when you couldn't walk into the store. And got away with it, every time. Plus wealth monstrosities created by SpaceX, and indeed "brick and mortar" superstores weren't aided by the Internet. And the vast majority of rich fucks these days come from two scams: rental properties (especially hotels) and private equity. Internet doesn't help either of those schemes. (I'd add speculation to the schemes, but that money doesn't exist; people are just lying that it does.) So I'd say the Internet is... probably... a good thing. But its timing is terrible, coinciding with the constant, total failure of anyone opposing rich fucks and the unstoppable enslavement of every man, woman and child while the planet burns. Sometimes I just wish I could talk to my neighbors, and do something to protect ourselves against this global wave of tyranny.

Do you really expect a publically licensed corporation to resist law enforcement? You need to talk to the mafia if you want someone who can say no to cops. There is no law in any country anywhere in history that says a company can't lie to you that it's private, then sell out to the cops. Completely legal, completely expected! If you want private email, you need to do one simple thing. PGP. Anything else, anyone saying "We won't give your data to the cops" is lying. CC: @protonprivacy@mastodon.social

That would be a sight to see... All I'm worried about is the jackass that sells me a fridge and an oven, so they can tell the police when I'm cooking dinner, or getting a midnight snack, so they know when to break my door in and black bag me. While also telling my electric company how much I'll put up with them jacking up my bill. CC: @thegibson@masto.hackers.town

It's funny because discrimination isn't always so overt as the neighbors directly bullying you. I've been effectively homeless, given no property to be driven from, relying only on the kindness of others to have a place to live for most of my life, and people are demanding that I support the unprivileged just because of the color of my skin. Like yeah, go ahead, take the land from the rich fucks. They deserve none of it. Build yourself a good life, and maybe let me live there too. But what am I supposed to do for you? Give you the only person in the world who cares for me enough to allow me to sleep? Tell the rich fucks very sternly to give up their property, and wait for them to voluntarily comply? Because that's what protesting is. Force them to, with my one pathetic fist against their armies? We need to stop thinking about privilege, and start thinking about helping each other out, however we can. CC: @s_d_brath@mastodon.social

Bad enough, though. Even if you pick an arbitrary age, it helps with profiling you. And good luck changing it, once you've told the powers that be how old you are! Regardless, I'd rather cut off everyone in California from the Internet, than let them pass a law like that. Speaking of which, are there any prominent cables that the UK uses to communicate with the outside world? Asking for a friend. CC: @lunduke@linuxrocks.online

There was a spell component that would remove the floor! So what I'd do is go in an overlevelled dungeon, and hastily cast my spell, boxed into a corner near the entrance. Then I could snipe the monsters who couldn't reach me and level up like crazy, until one of them showed up with arrows and I booked it for the exit. Also fun was that guards couldn't jump so you just got behind the counter and was like, "Hiii officer! :D" Yeah, that was one game I used to play... a lot. Never got into the later ones. Mojang makes me angry about how he said he'd open source Minecraft if it was popular. Damn, that's dedication to defeating firewalls, seems like there'd be an easier loophole. I'd like to write a voxel game in C, shouldn't be too hard there's even a proof of concept out there. Really, I'm interested in 2D physicsy games these days though.

That's a sort of relationship that develops between any company and a modding community, though Bethesda is one of the worst. (So how's the modding going in Minecraft? (screams of the damned)) It's very toxic, and companies shouldn't be allowed to profit from a game that other people helped create. Even if those people are idiots who worship the company for some reason.

Problem with taxing billionaires is they get most of their wealth by extorting people, so the more we tax them, the more they tighten the screw and pass on the buck. "Oh, I'm simply forced to increase rent by that bad, bad government who's taxing me." The solution of course is repossessing their property. They can't hike rents on something they no longer own!

I mean, I don't advise trolling bigots into explosive rage, but it is a way to find out what they're really thinking. I usually just look at their past posts, and if it's all bigoted, I don't bother doing anything but warn people away from them. Not exactly an expert here. I just like to understand where they're coming from.

That sounds kind of cerebral. I'd just say something like "That was not cool, man. You don't really think that (subject of the joke)?" If you're lucky, their answer will surprise you. CC: @joshsusser@autistics.life

What makes their humor suck is that they are frustrated and angry and seething, trying to joke as if they're not. Trying to hide their rage. Some of them are doing it to identify the secret evil commies among us (who don't laugh), and others are just terribly insecure about people discovering that they care way too much about hating something.
