@rommix0@mindly.social So I do actually talk in my sleep, even when not recording. Yeah, sometimes it makes sleepovers interesting. Like the time as a teenager I shouted in my sleep "Your fuzzy socks are disturbing me!" while in a camp cabin full of guys. They wouldn't let me live it down for the entire week at camp, and I spent the entire week finding random socks left in my space where I would be sure and find them.

I got tired of how mudlet constantly skips things with the built-in screen reader output, because they're using UIA or something. So I made a thing so mudlet can do direct screen reader output the way mushclient does, probably to the horror of @matt@toot.cafe and others: github.com/fastfinge/sral-mudlet
But it works. #NVDA and #jaws and probably other things (though I didn't test zdsr and narrator). It builds on Linux, but it doesn't work on Linux because I don't have a Linux machine with speech dispatcher.
Note: the C code in sral_bridge.dll is AI generated by perplexity computer, because I'm not comfortable enough with C to do it myself from scratch.

Highlighting the word “Walkman” and suggesting “Consider a more gender neutral term, like walkperson” was sure helpful! Did one of the “anti-woke” boomer standup “comedians” train this thing?Because that sounds like something I’d hear on some cursed Netflix comedy special. @stevenscott@tweesecake.social I messed with it, and it's exactly what I want! Unfortunately I had to read the sourcecode to figure out how it works. So to save you the effort:
When you run the soundboard.exe, no window opens. You need to press alt+control+something, and it will open a "browse for file" dialogue. Here you can find a sound (wav/mp3/whatever) you want to play on the hotkey you just pressed. If you have other hotkeys already registered, soundboard won't conflict with them; you just can't use those keys for sounds. I have alt+control+n for NVDA, and alt+control+J for jaws, so when I press those soundboard just does nothing and they do what they're supposed to.
If you press the key for a sound multiple times, that sound just restarts from the beginning. You cannot pause or stop a sound that's currently playing. So don't press the wrong key!
If you want to quit soundboard, press alt+control+q.
If you want to change the sound on a particular key, you have to open soundboard.ini (a file it makes in the folder with soundboard.exe when you run it) in notepad and change it yourself.
If you want to change the volume of soundboard, or make it use a different sound device, it doesn't matter what you want, because you can't. For simple lads like me, that's okay. But I suspect it might be a problem for all of you complicated radio professionals. LOL :-)

@stevenscott@tweesecake.social Interesting! I just...kind of assumed that this must exist! Though admittedly my needs are much simpler than yours. I'm just trying to trigger five different bits of audio during a presentation, without taking my slides off screen. I do a history of accessibility presentation frequently for some of our customers, with multiple sound clips going from the Apple II to modern neural text to speech sprinkled throughout to demonstrate how far things have come, and get folks reflecting on how much of modern technology has come out of accessibility research. I can put the sounds directly in the powerpoint, but playing and pausing sound clips from the presenter view with a screen reader is kinda fiddley. So I thought: "Hey, the blind radio guys must have solved my exact problem!" And then you just let me down. LOL

Do you speak another language? Do you wish the #eloquence addon for 64-bit #NVDA (version 2026 and above) was available in that language? Now it can be! Thanks to the hard work of CyrilleB79:

• support for translations was added (also by CyrilleB79)
Sadly, as a monolingual person, I'm unfamiliar with the translation workflow. But it works the same way as other NVDA addons. All translation submissions are appreciated, with priority given to the languages eloquence supports. If there are no other changes that need releasing, I will release a new version of the addon every Friday with all available translation updates. You can install the addon via the updater, or find the latest release, along with a file called Eloquence.pot that I believe translators need, here: github.com/fastfinge/eloquence_64/releases/tag/v16
It looks like you need to make a file named nvda.po, then put it in:

If it's bundled with mirc, it's not mine. If it installs into an existing mIRC, it's either mine or Sean's. The one good thing about github, these days, is that abandoned projects stay there. I honestly wish I still had the code for sjams that me and @cachondo@defcon.social worked on years ago. It was my favourite incarnation of that concept, and would probably still work honestly. AI is both impressive and ridiculous. I have a little command line Python script that does some basic text reformatting stuff for me. I wanted a version that I could use on my phone. I gave Gemini the script, and asked it to make "a version of this program with the same functionality that I can use on my iphone, but with a textbox and some buttons instead of command line options." I expected it to rewrite this extremely simple Python file into JavaScript or something and give me an HTML file. Or if it wanted to do things the hard way, maybe swift. Nope! It installed uvicorn and requests and fastapi and a bunch of stuff and then rewrote the python script so it could import the existing functionality into the web app it just built. To be fair, it worked perfectly the first time, either on the command line or as a web server. But the original script was about 100 lines of Python! Rewriting it in JavaScript would've been much faster. And not required a reverse proxy and a bunch of deployment work. I guess it took "the same functionality" way too literally and decided the best way to achieve that would be to run the exact same code. When we talk about the impact of #AI, nobody seems to be talking about the impact caused by running AI generated code for years to come. If I didn't know better, and was just an AI vibe coder, I'd now be running an entire docker and reverse proxy setup for something that could be done in the browser with a hundred or so lines of JavaScript. That's honestly a tiny impact individually, but over the course of hundreds and thousands of people and companies, it's going to add up.

Okay! New #NVDA #eloquence release. Once again.
This release fixes all of the bugs in v9:
• your dictionaries no longer get clobbered by the dictionary updater
• the addon updates button no longer just displays an error
Moving forward after this release you should be able to use the "check for updates" button in the eloquence category under settings.

v9: proof that begging for contributions works
This feature packed release is thanks to regular contributor titet11, and new contributor crucio2211! Here's what's new:
• Smart dictionary updates: Preserves user's custom dictionary entries during updates, Only adds new words, prevents duplicates, and Auto-removes accents for compatibility (é→e, ñ→n). It also auto-downloads new language dictionaries. (Thanks crucio2211)
• Enhanced Pause Control (from IBMTTS): Three pause modes for better speech rhythm. Mode 0: Do not shorten, Mode 1: Shorten at end only, Mode 2: Shorten all pauses. (once again thanks to crucio2211)
• One-click setup for Windows logon/UAC screen support: now you can click a copy helper button in the eloquence settings category, meaning manual copying is no longer required. (Still from crucio2211 who is on fire)
• Ability to check for updates manually (thanks to crucio2211)
• fixes to voice pitch when switching languages (thanks to eloquence_64 regular titet11)

@Tamasg@mindly.social Huh. At first I thought I'd found a speechbox bug. Then I learned that Espeak also cannot pronounce chitin. Only eloquence with the community dictionary says it correctly. Weird! I'd have thought that was a pretty common word. Guess it shows just how spoiled we are with eloquence. New speechbox sounds really, really close, though! It's not stressful to listen to anymore. Just a bit mushy for pleasure reading.

@TheQuinbox@dragonscave.space The only reason I'd want a dialogue is if it was a web view that just showed the HTML version of the post content. Because everyone but Mastodon lets people format posts with lists and links and stuff. At least FastSM will actually recognize formatted links now. But it along with every other accessible client just gets rid of all other formatting. Whereas Fedra will actually let me write formatted posts if I want, seeing as my server allows that. God this is so good I can finally stop using enafore for things.

@sclower@stranger.social I suspect it would work better if I wrote the project requirements document myself. Then fed it into the AI for implementation. Maybe it would shift me from thinking "What do I want coded" and towards "What are my requirements". I tend to start thinking too low level, about what libraries I want to use and what language, when I still haven't one hundred percent laid out what I want to do. The example that prompted me to post was reformatting a set of files. If I'd have thought just a bit harder about what I actually needed, I would have ended up with three regular expressions and a batch script, not a C# DotNet app.

Honestly the biggest problem with #AI coding is that it lets me build things without having to think about what I want to build. It's happened twice now where the AI coded something perfectly, only for me to realize when I had exactly what I asked for, it wasn't what I needed or really wanted. I usually realize this during the act of building, and the act of building often helps me clarify what it is that I actually want.

@jaybird110127@dragonscave.space It actually cost me less than putting in an automatic switchover. Because I could do it myself, without requiring a licensed electrician, inspection from the power company, or a disconnect from the grid while it was installed. I looked at a propane generator with automatic switching, and between all the licenses and completely replacing the breaker box, it was going to cost me around 20 thousand dollars. I did this system for only eight thousand.

@jaybird110127@dragonscave.space I have a hole home battery backup. However, I don't switch to it automatically. I want to ration power, so I switch circuit by circuit based on what's going on. For example, in the summer I don't put the hot tub circuit on it, but in the winter I have to in order to prevent the pipes from freezing. I also shut down the servers and then take the battery backup away from them. Assuming I ration to use only the essentials (medical equipment, lights, refrigeration) I can keep everything going for up to five days without electricity or a fuel delivery. Also, the battery system can be charged by a Tesla charger, or any other electric car charging station. And it's multiple batteries, so if I think after 60 hours I won't be getting power back, I can take one discharged battery and recharge it, and bring it back without interruption to the power.
