A while ago I mentioned the Johnny Decimal system for organizing notes / files / etc. Took a couple weeks to organize but finally figured out a decent indexing scheme for my notes and wrote it up 🙂

Just wanted to flag that small Hetzner VPSs cost the same as an AWS EC2 t4g.nano and have 2gb of RAM instead of the hilariously low 500mb on EC2.

They also adhere to German data protection standards (stricter than GDPR alone).

Likely a VERY good choice if you don't want to use your own hardware but want to publicly expose services to the internet.

Added isso comments to my blog at last! Took about half a day of work to get everything sorted, so not so bad.

Happy because I can avoid paying Disqus, ads, third party tracking, etc.

Have been investigating library and information science resources out of a long term personal interest.

Disturbingly, many online resources shut down in the 2010s and the only ones which remain seem to be niche academic journals.

Any librarians know what's up with the discipline seemingly dying right as it should be thriving? Quality information is harder to find than ever and we are swamped with garbage.

Rearranging my chaotically organized notes and may look into using Johnny Decimal. I like zettelkasten in principle but I suck at maintaining indexes and JD seems more compatible with how I use neovim.

When I was younger courses on basic computer skills (mostly for older people) seemed like a big deal.

Do people still teach this? Or do we just assume everyone is computer literate to some degree?

I wonder if there's room for a Linux version. Most 'beginner' Linux resources seem to target people who already have substantial technical skills.

Been reading "How Linux Works" by Brian Ward and it makes me want to install Arch / Gentoo / LFS despite knowing that this is a terrible idea for a computer I want to y'know, use. How do people deal with systems they just want to play with for sysadmin stuff? VMs / containers? Homelab? I have hardware I could play with. #homelab #linux #arch #gentoo #lfs

So AWS allegedly has very tight data sovereignty compliance and I assume for government contracts this is adhered to. But as the Microsoft case shows, even in the EU some US providers may move data to the US.

$1m question: does this also apply to AWS? This will probably have a real impact on what I do with my personal projects as I know AWS pretty well but also want tight EU data controls.
