I haven't checked out the video, it's arguments or it's figures, but to a large extent living on a boat depends on being able to keep it somewhere there is reliable water on which to float it and somewhere you can raise enough income to maintain it, not to mention whether you have aspirations to own more stuff than you could keep on a boat, which the vast majority do, especially if they plan to raise kids on a boat.

We know that feeling the entire cottage we're in , almost certainly built circa 1776-7 as it's as canal company worker's cottage, is heated by a single open fire modernised (I would guess, in the 1960s) with a back boiler - the kind that was banned from being installed new in 2005.
Actually, there must be more to it than that as us and our immediate neighbours share a stack that emerges from the apex of the roof. All the others in the terrace emerge ftom the roof on the canal facing side. It seems that at some point in the past our cottages were upgraded with multiple fire places.

It's been a while since I reported on our own #boat. Before coming to Cheshire I did manage to call in on the #mooring and remove the #heaters from her as, with any luck, there won't be any more #cold snaps that justify trying to stop the boat from #freezing.
She really is beginning to look as if she needs a really good #clean. We had promised ourselves she'd be lifted out last #winter = but the house move got in the way and it was never arranged.

We're currently in #Cheshire in our #cottage fronting the #Bridgewater #Canal
Just decided I needed a photograph to prove it when nb Vulcan passed by. Given the number of solar panels I thought it might be a #liveaboard but a few moments research revealed this website:

Bobbing Boat doesn't tell the whole story of #UK #canal #boat #licencing. It's not just length, there are different rates for private boats and hire boats. And I forget the arrangements for continuously cruising #liveaboard #boaters.
I recall that the boats I owned a 1/12th shared in were classed as a #hireboat, although, typically, such boats cruised for about 48 weeks a year, while a typical holiday hire boat only cruises about 36 weeks a year, which is why I can understand the thought that length should not be the sole criteria.
It's different again on the #NorfolkBroads. Licencing is on the basis of area (length x beam) and there are multiple classes with the biggest discounts for #yachts, smaller ones for auxiliary yachts, electric powered craft and so on. Not to mention different rates for hire boats.
And just don't ask about the UK's Boat Safety Scheme! #BSS

I received a letter from the #UK #government Department of Work & Pensions (#dwp) recently. It was sent to my old address and had arrived thanks to the forwarding service of #RoyalMail.
They told me I couldn't do it online due to one of the answers I gave, so I made a phone call.
After 30 minutes of repeatedly being told they knew I was #waiting it was great to speak to a human with a thoroughly #English accent. I could understand her and enjoy a little chit chat. Since my #teenage #years I've been known by my middle name. That's common in Ireland, I was told. She confessed to having Irish relatives in her family.
But to the point of this toot! I really should have told her that #Google reckons the number I rang belongs to a company called "Funerals on a Budget". After the call a dialogue appeared asking me if I could confirm they had the correct information. I was so busy #laughing I managed to close the #dialogue before answering.

We got back to #Norfolk from our trip to #Cheshire last night, to find the remnants of #snow in a #plantpot beside the door.
This morning we woke to find two plant troughs blown over. The third blew over in the other direction later this morning.
Confirms that the #wind blows round our #yard in very #unpredictable ways.

Yes, propane! Most #narrowboats have #propane #cookers. It can also be used for #heating. Alde is probably the leading brand for producing #propane boilers for boats that will run radiators as a #domestic #boiler will.
#Diesel #heaters are also popular. Eberspacher and Webasto being the main brands though many fit very competitively priced Chinese units, but I read somewhere that they are not approved for marine use and should they start a fire insurance would be invalid.
A few #liveaboard boaters have larger Aga or Rayburn oil or solid fuel fired cookers that will also drive radiators
I referred to #cooker rather than #stove deliberately. Almost all privately owned narrow boats have small traditional style #solidfuel
(wood/coal) stoves fitted. On 19th century #boats theses would have been used both for heating and cooking. On modern boats they are usually stand alone heaters in the saloon, but some will be fitted with boilers and drive radiators elsewhere on the boat.

We'd emailed the wonderful Liam of https://www.midlandsandcoast.co.uk/ to try to sort out a #coal delivery to #ourplace which fronts the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal. I took a photo of his #boat last time we got #fuel from him. It's based the same distance on one side of #PrestonBrook #bridge as we are the other. This time I needed an emergency supply. He gave me a bag, lent me a barrow to carry it home and said he'd invoice me when he delivered all we have room to store.
As I collected the fuel the sun came out to reveal The Midlands & Coast Canal Carriers Ltd yard in all its glory.

We moved to #Winterton-on-Sea in October last year. It's an old #fishing #village on the #Norfolk #coast
As you might imagine it's popular place to #holiday and many of the #cottages are used as a #secondhome and holiday let's.

Wish I had a good answer to that one. Being a #boater I have never tried actually seeing the #Broads by land. Places like #Wroxham and #Horning have plenty of possibilities for #riverside views but not broads.
Most Broads have edges too soggy to have roads near them and most of the banks are in private hands or the hands of organisations such as the #NationalTrust and #Norfolk #Wildlife Trust, whose priorities do not to encourage unencumbered access by the masses.
Malthouse Broad, near Ranworth, must be one of the best exceptions. I've never tried to reach Salhouse or Wroxham by road, but the owner of the first offers moorings which are accessible from a car park some 800yds away and it's probably possible to explore the grounds around the sailing club at Wroxham Broad.

Many a true word....
From the mid-60s, after I left school and started getting floor spots in local folk clubs, till the early 2010s I was always a solo performer, initially with just guitar and harmonica. Then, in 1975, I added the cymbals and organ pedals, and began getting paid bookings as the main or only act in clubs, pubs, coffee bars and the occasional festival.
Then life got in the way or, as the web site put it, "broke up due to musical differences" and didn't return to music till after another house move.
That's when I found myself in a group of musicians who, once a month, jammed their way through a sing song sessions in the pub outside which I moored my yacht. That graduated to being a founder member of the Muddy Broad Blues Band. I left them in 2016 when our leader decided he wanted less blues and more rock anthems.

It was a little early, for me, but I drew the curtains a little before 08:00 to see an #otter in the #lake below me. I managed to get one photograph of it before it swam round the decking and on out of sight behind the cottages. At around 09:30 it became clear there was a #family group still on site and I took a walk onto the island and round the back of the lake to discover there were two #adults and two #young at #play

Much has changed since this plan was submitted to obtain permission to start rebuilding the set of derelict farm buildings on the site. Our plot is the south-eastern one, one of just four. Only ours and the one north of us is currently occupied.
The old barns to the west are also to become two L-shaped dwellings. I suspect that any dividing wall between in the centre of the U shape will probably be 6ft. All the plots other than ours have further garden area to the north and west.
I like our 9ft wall. Obviously, it takes some light from our neighbours but they have much more space to the north. There is only one small window on the southern side of our home, and the wall helps reflect some light into all the windows on the north side of our place. The minuscule area of ours needing maintenance will allow us more time to go boating and spend time visiting our granddaughter.
You're right though, 6ft is a much more normal height to divide gardens.

Using my crude non-builder description, the pictures I find of Flemish Bond have alternating courses of one long and one short bricks.
However these walls have alternating courses of two long and one short.
That's why I think they deserve a different name. I did wonder if it was a bond unique to Norfolk. We live in a restored set of barn conversions and much of the older brickwork is in this bond.

The toy car came from a Christmas cracker pulled several years ago, but until we got to the new house which has a large marble-topped breakfast bar it never performed to full capability.

Until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't eaten at a #Chinese #Restaurant in about 40 #years.
Diana and I went to one a couple of weeks ago while staying in #Cheshire for a few days. We went to the "Chinese Delight" in Frodsham and had their "#Banquet for Two" as we weren't sure what to order.
I failed to take any photos of the soup course and only started as I was half way through the next one, but these are some of the images I sent on our family WhatsApp Group. We hadn't realise quite how much we had ordered, when looking at the menu. These days we usually feel quite full on those lunchtime "#SeniorCitizen Discount Deals".
If you're feeling hungry, we'd recommend the place.

Bless you! Yes, successful, if long winded.
The move was a three day affair.
Day One: Fill a large van and a smaller one and take the content into temporary storage.
Day Two: Fill another large van and another smaller one. Unload it at the new house (only 30 minutes car drive away).
Day Three: Bring the Day One vans to the new house and unload.
That's when the real work started. There were lots of smaller rooms at the old place. Other than the bedrooms and bathrooms there's just one huge empty space for cooking eating, relaxing and anything else you want to do. No office. No Music room for band rehearsals.
I've played gigs in village halls smaller than our new main space. From it a staircase rises to the one bedroom that's upstairs.
How do you make a space like that feel cozy? Where do you hang the many pictures we have when there are no walls?
The cardboard boxes were emptied quite quickly, but it took weeks to find a new home for everything.

Back in November we were staying at our son's, dog-sitting, while they were on #holiday. I took a #guitar with me, my #Fender #Sonoron #Thinline. It's not a guitar with a great reputation and was deleted from their catalogue within a couple of years. Perhaps one of the reasons for that were the #cheap #Chinese tuners.
I was placing the guitar in its case and allowed the neck to fall the final six inches. Unfortunately, it was slightly out of line and a tuner hit the side of the case. The plastic button did not survive.
I was amazed to find there's no such thing as a standard #Stratocaster neck. Tuners are sold in sets of six and I found sets that had the separation between first and sixth string of 117mm 119mm and 120mm and, I dare say, the were others available.
My guitar turned out to need a 119mm set. I opted for a metal replacement button. I only learned afterwards that I hadn't fitted the string in the way intended with a slot headed tuner.
