Every now and then it's good to go down the rabbit hole of folk music from the island of Jinsy.

Take it away, Master Croog and Julian.

@troberts@theblower.au @brh@metalhead.club Same, but I also believe LLMs aren't it. The flaws are inherent, so no amount of additional compute or training data can fix that. OpenAI's attempts to solve so-called "hallucinations" actually made them worse, with multi-step processing compounding errors. Any potential reliable assistant will be something else. And yes, no super-intelligence is coming to save us. All marketing bs for investors, while loss-making image/video-gen stuff is novelty fluff for the gee-whiz factor.

@troberts@theblower.au @brh@metalhead.club Yeah, but they also keep saying AGI is "real soon now, just give us more money", but it's not happening in any of our lifetimes, not from spicy autocomplete slop-generators. None of these slop-peddlers are going to turn a genuine profit on this tech, because it simply can't do what they claim. If it was really going to revolutionise the world, make folks rich, etc. they wouldn't be putting in ads and monetising porn-generation - desperate for any revenue. It's all a grift. 🤷‍♂️

@troberts@theblower.au Awesome sauce, thanks! Just double checked and we have Pokémon Scarlet of that gen, so same-same and all good! Graphics look markedly better in screenshots, so will upgrade in the next day or two. It seems there's also free S2 upgrades for a few other first-party OG games I have - Link's Awakening, Echoes of Wisdom, Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Pretty happy with that. I'll check out Ball X Pit and see if it's my jam or not. Thanks for the honest summary!

@troberts@theblower.au @InTheseHeels@mastodon.ie Archer was a weird one for me. Bounced off when I first watched, later decided to try again, and became an absolute devotee. And I loved both regular spy seasons and where it veered off into different era/genre settings - esp. the 'Tales of the Gold Monkey' Pacific island bush pilot/adventurer one. The only other show I did the same "bounce off, then fall hard" thing was Arrested Development. HATED it on first watch, currently enjoying a 3rd total rewatch. 🤷‍♂️

@troberts@theblower.au I saw all three at the cinema, and yeah definite great moments in each - big fan of the Cumberbatch Smaug, and (possibly weirdly) I really liked the Radagast the Brown stuff. 🤷‍♂️ 😉 But the bloat kills me. It could have been one (albeit long) great film, or split down the middle as two (which I think Jackson planned, til studio interference) but three was madness. (I have the first and third on BluRay, from op shops. Might finally watch the first again, with the youngest over Xmas.)

@troberts@theblower.au My youngest is finding it amusing so far, because he's not been booted off any of his accounts, and the only one of his classmates who was circumvented it in minutes by sticking on an obviously fake moustache. Meanwhile I suspect I will be posting here more, as while Bluesky is not even on the banned list (much like Mastodon), they've decided to pre-emptively introduce age verification. It only affects being able to reply to DMs, but the servile pre-compliance pisses me off no end.

@troberts@theblower.au Absolutely fantastic summary of the situation. For me the real mystery has always been why anyone believes the wild and often laughable claims made for LLMs.. The inherent flaws were pretty clear from the start, and no amount of adding more “compute” or training data can fix that. LLMs are dead end tech. All mouth and no trousers.

@troberts@theblower.au Well I guess we know who the spider-man is having for dinner tonight. 😉 Seeing the video for Lullaby was a defining teen moment for me. Not the spider thing, so much as the vibe I got from the musicians dressed like antique toys with pale faces, covered in dust and cobwebs as they played in almost mechanical fashion. The clip also tapped into vague childhood memories of being in bed sick, with perspective and scale all out of kilter. Brilliant.

Tying MacOS and iOS to the visual style of the absolutely niche and "not terribly useful after all" Apple Vision will be looked back on as a huge fucking misstep.
