Blows my mind that the most powerful companies in the world fold for the current administration on command to protect shareholder interests but a company whose business model is stealing content to build a bullshit generator somehow has a backbone at significant cost to themselves.
This world no longer makes sense to me.

Licenses are a way for copyright holders to let others use their work while retaining copyright. The important point is that licenses *allow*. They don't *deny*. Copyright denies by default.
But there are no copyright holders on works generated by an LLM. A license granted from someone who isn't a copyright holder is meaningless. So even if the LGPL doesn't apply to the new code, neither does MIT.

I've been trying to formulate my thoughts about the chardet relicensing issue (linked below) but I think my position on it is that, regardless of whether the maintainer can relicense the project, an LLM wrote the entire project therefore the license is irrelevant because it can't be copyrighted *at all*.

I assume the price of renting the server covers its own materials cost within a few months, though (it was the case ~20 years ago). It still needs to cover ongoing costs after that, but AFAIK those costs haven't changed.
Maybe wholesale RAM prices have changed that much. Maybe they don't want to increase later. That's just speculation until they tell us, though.

But an overnight jump that large isn't great optics. I would've assumed they're not operating on margins thin enough, even at their notoriously consumer-friendly prices, that the PR hit would be deemed less damaging.

Adding to my skepticism here, the video as recorded and the output video don't match. I can't tell if that's due to post-processing in the camera app or if this is actually from two separate recordings.
Note he's directly on the edge of the frame while recording but the result video (second half of the Instagram reel) never shows him getting that close to it.

I'd stop short of blaming the humans for not adapting to the slop factory, though. The team's processes serve the team to an extent. If the slop factory doesn't, but the humans have to adapt to it, then it is indeed the problem.
Humans use machines to make things easier for ourselves. If we have to serve the machine, that's exactly the wrong direction.

I've been looking for search databases (basically: Elasticsearch alternatives) that use object stores like S3 as the storage layer.
I found Quickwit, which does exactly that. Turns out they were acquired by Datadog, though, and haven't released a new version in almost 2 years. That's weird because it seems like it's still being maintained, I just had to compile it myself. Thankfully, that's pretty simple.

Just like with every other parser I've ever written, once the boilerplate was in place, everything else was easy. The hardest part was just starting.

Some use cases I've got in mind are:
- compiling SQL queries into query objects (like `sqlc` in Go) at compile time
- query sanitization for observability libraries
- static analysis

My landlord sent me a photo of the water bill and said it hadn't been paid in a long time. The thing is, water bills in Cleveland (and apparently all of Ohio) are in the property owner's name.
Signing up for a water account in Cleveland requires having an account number which the utility companies tell you is on your bill. I've never received a water bill at this place.
Turns out, the bill goes to *him*. I've never received one. No way to know how to pay it.

My reading of that would require a lot more compute (1 set of GPUs to run the model per concurrent request). So I assume I'm misunderstanding.
