I don't think most people realize how hard it is to give people simple, straightforward cybersecurity guidance.
There's a huge risk in erring on the side of caution: people finding your recommendations burdensome and doing _nothing_ as a result.

I needed a new toilet supply hose. I wanted one with metal fittings on both ends (@jik@federate.social). I couldn't find it locally so I needed to order online. I found it on HomeDepot.com, but I don't shop there when I can avoid it because Fuck ICE, so I searched for that item at other merchants and found it on #eBay for slightly more than Home Depot. I ordered it there… and they placed an order on HomeDepot.com with my name and address as the recipient. 😠

Someone make this make sense…
Yesterday when we were at the car dealer,¹ before we submitted our auto loan application², I unfroze our credit reports at TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax so the loan application would go through.³
I have email confirming that my report was unfrozen at TransUnion, so I must have successfully logged into their website.
Today, when I went to put the freezes back, I wasn't able to log into the TransUnion website with the credentials in 1Password.

I really am grateful to #ZocDoc for sending my wife and me email letting us know that they've updated their privacy policy, because this prompted me to say to myself, "Wait a minute, the only provider of ours that used ZocDoc no longer does, so there's probably no longer any reason for us to have our data on this platform and we should tell them to delete it," followed by logging into the site for my wife and me and doing exactly that.

It's hard to exaggerate how much of a catastrophe this war is going to be for the Trump administration. I'm sure there are people in the Pentagon and the intelligence community who understand, and I'm equally sure they're all keeping their heads down and their mouths shut because they don't want to lose their jobs.

Last week the auto shop said it would take $3k to fix our 2009 Ford, so we decided it's time to throw in the towel and move on to our next used car.
They said it would still be driveable for a while, but alas, today one of the killer potholes on the route home from our son's school caused the muffler to break off from the exhaust pipe.
Our search for a replacement just became a much higher priority, and in the meantime life's going to be a bit complicated.

There's no way in hell I am going to give the current U.S. federal government access to any of my health information that I don't have to.

Posting scandalous photos without indicating their provenance even when asked earns a block from me, and should from you as well.
A deepfake that confirms your priors is still a deepfake. It does more harm than good even if the situation depicted has "truthiness".
The bad guys circulate fakes so that _real_ evidence, when it becomes public, will also be dismissed as fake.
Stop sharing unverified stuff or following people who do.

My motorcycle loan was from #GreenwoodCreditUnion. I wanted to pay it off via ACH transfer.
Most banks can do transfers in one business day. But Greenwood? Nope! They don't support Zelle or FedNow, and their ACH transfers take at least three days to go through. It appears they don't handle their own transfers; they go through Western Union. Bizarre!

I wrote a new #Thunderbird extension today: "Per Folder Preferences", which allows you to cause TB global preferences to change dynamically based on which folder you're currently viewing.
I use it to cause messages to be marked as read when I view them in some folders but not others (like, when I'm helping my uncle manage his email).

We're visiting my mother-in-law in a Cleveland, Ohio suburb, and she keeps telling us that it's not safe for us to drive downtown.
She and at least some of her friends are seemingly convinced that anybody who goes downtown is risking being gunned down in the street.
This is absurd. There were 166 homicides last year in Cuyahoga County (not just downtown, not just gun homicides). This is a statistical blip. It's ridiculous to be afraid. (1/5)

We stayed at a Red Roof Inn last night (trying to avoid Hilton because fuck ICE).
First room they put us in, the linens were sitting in a pile on a chair, i.e., the beds weren't made.
My wife was like, "It's fine, this is just how some motels are."
I was like, "I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I've never in my life stayed at a hotel or motel where I was expected to make the beds."
I called the front desk and asked, they said "woops", apologized, and moved us to another room.

*sigh* On a family road trip to visit relatives, stopped at a motel last night on the way, forgot my pillow that I brought from home in the motel when we left this morning. 😞
Guess we'll have to go back the same way and pick it up on the way home, but in the meantime sleeping at the relatives' house is going to be difficult since they have crappy pillows (which is why I was bringing mine).
Tried to call the motel just now to ask them to hold into it, and no one answered the phone. *sigh again*

I agree with everything in this post, but I just want to say how hilarious I find it that the candidate's social media person still thinks it's necessary to put the period in front of the tag, when that hasn't been necessary for many years.
I wonder if the original technical reason why it was needed has been lost to the mists of time, and people keep doing it as a stylistic thing without any understanding of why.

Remember the months-long saga when my #healthInsurance falsely decided that three of my kids had other primary insurance and stopped paying their claims?
Apparently our dental insurance decided to get in on the action. They just rejected my son's dental checkup claim for the same (wrong) reason: it has to go first to a (made-up) primary insurer. 😡🤬
How long will it take to fix this time?
First step: ask HR to confirm in writing that our health insurance does not cover dental checkups.

I'm a #GenX techie who's lived in #Boston since the late 80's.
My 15 minutes of fame were being fired by #DOGE from #USDS early in 2025 and sounding the alarm in every media outlet that'd listen since nobody else was doing it. I'm not a fan of limelight, so I stopped when others took up the baton.
My politics are aggressively progressive and antifascist, and I post about them a lot.

(Background info: we've already seen and loved the first Wicked movie (+ I've seen it on stage 2x on Broadway and once touring) and seen and liked both previous Knives Out movies.)

@cstross@wandering.shop @otfrom@functional.cafe Perhaps I am being naive, but I don't think the people at the level to be making decisions about whether to give clergy access to the facility are just in it for the cruelty and free to ignore the political ramifications of their actions. I think it's their job to consider the political ramifications, and I think they've concluded it will hurt the administration worse to keep the clergy out than to let them in.

Remember: the only reason that makes sense why #ICE would deny clergy access to the #Broadview detention facility to minister to the detainees is because they believe the substantial bad press and messaging damage from publicly denying clergy access is less bad than the damage that would result from the clergy seeing inside the facility and telling people what they saw.
