Apparently young guys nowadays are unironically addressing other guys whose names they don't know as "brother." Which is weird to me because when I was young those guys were calling everyone "bro," and the general semantic trend over the last 20 years has been towards abbreviating words, not speaking them in full. Also they're calling me "brother" despite my aging soft twink presentation.

@cshlan @CactuarJoe If you want high-speed rail, or rural broadband, or industrial policy that prioritizes reducing waste and pollution, you do in fact need state regulation. The size of the regulatory body determines how many people in how many areas can benefit. Environmental policy especially has to be national to be meaningful.

@CactuarJoe A lot of people who want to do away with the state have never grappled with how the state actually functions or what it does. Do you like safe pharmaceuticals? The post office? Apartment buildings that don't fall down before they're even finished? Government makes that happen.

@benroyce I will never understand why James Cameron decided to spend the latter part of his career on these films. They make money, sure. I suppose they're interesting in terms of the technology required. But the Avatar movies sink like marbles. They have no lasting impact on popular culture. I've certainly never felt compelled to watch one, and I've watched a lot of dumb movies on purpose.

@benroyce Something I think about every so often is that when the 2nd Avatar movie was just released or about to be released, one of the actors was quoted as saying that she'd assumed it had come out some time ago and been a total flop. She'd filmed her parts more than two years prior and had more or less forgotten about it.
