I'm back in C++ land (using bazel as the environment engine) and, once again, I am amazed at how slow everything is. Builds are slow, running tests are slow, iteration is slow, lookup is slow, everything is just sooooooooo slooooooooow.

On the plus side though, at the end of it all... I do get a program that I have no expectation is correct.

Developers: "I don't use LLMs because I need to know what my code does. If the machine makes the wrong decisions, I'm going to be responsible for the outcome and I can't trust the machine to make choices for me."

Also developers: Write literally anything ever in C++.

Don't bottle up your art because it's bad.

Bad art is inspiring too.

Sometimes people who have an idea that should be shared keep it to themselves because they don't think they're good enough. You put out bad art, they see it, and they realize that if that passes as worth sharing, they're too critical of themselves.

This seems like a joke but it's not.

"What will you do after your term is over?"

It's generally simpler to capture tall skyscrapers like this from a distant vantage point; the classic photos of WTC are usually shot from Brooklyn or New Jersey. But here I wanted to show it as it's

@mattblaze@federate.social Oh yeah. Up close these buildings more-or-less defy reason. I remember visiting NYC in the late '90s and looking up at one of the WTC towers from the ground. It didn't make sense to my brain. The dimensions were all wrong. I literally remember thinking "I thought they'd look taller."

In the Starfleet Technical Manual, there is a throwaway detail of the LCARS user interface that when it is upgraded, users can still utilize the previous several versions. This is because their work is mission-critical and it is unacceptable to compromise the mission by forcing unfamiliar changes; eventual retraining is part of their job, but the flexibility allows them to take the retraining at their own pace. I think about this from time-to-time and how this is still a sci-fi idea that is seen all too rarely in how we do actual computer UIs. #StarTrek #LCARS #UI

@mattblaze@federate.social The thing I keep bumping up against discussing this online with folks is that they misinterpret the behavior of large demographics: they think that a large population should cause every sampling to drift towards the mean, and that's the opposite of how it works. "You mean to tell me you think it's more likely that everyone in this town decided to vote against a candidate while voting for another candidate down-ticket in the same party, and that's no indication of fraud?" "You're asking me if I think it possible that happened once in 100,000 polling locations? Um..... Yes?"
