The choice to pick between #emacs and #vim is much more difficult because although emacs features look really cool being part of the cult of vim also sounds really cool

@divyaranjan@mathstodon.xyz @marekfort@mastodon.online I will make a comparison. Editor like Atom, VSCode and Zed are a Toyota. Very nice car indeed. But Emacs is a battle tank or Apache helicopter or even an alien mother ship. People will find it much easier to drive a Toyota. But people need lot of practice to drive a battle tank. #Emacs #Atom #VSCode #Zed Yes, I agree with you that we can use other editor suitable for our situation'

@divyaranjan@mathstodon.xyz @marekfort@mastodon.online @fsf@hostux.social @conservancy@social.sfconservancy.org Emacs is such a wonderful editor. But it has a huge advantage and a problem at the same time. It is highly efficient and highly intuitive for those proficient with it. But need time to practice and highly UNintuitive for those starting to use Emacs. Many people need editor which can be used fast. #Emacs #Zed #VSCode

I found this reply that I made in 1984 to Dennis Ritchie in the net.followup newsgroup. I was at the time lobbying Sun to add 8-bit character set support to the firmware, but they wanted to hold out for a 16-bit system, like the as yet unnamed Unicode. There was eventually an interim solution but my memory of that is a bit foggy. #Usenet #DennisRitchie #C #Pascal #emacs #VT100 #charactersets #languages #Swedish #programming #unicode #SunMicrosystems #Värmland

Imagine a protocol like #LSP, but for adding real-time collaboration to existing text editors. It would allow #Neovim to edit a #Hedgedoc, or peer-to-peer pair programming between #VSCode and #Emacs! We've come up with our own little protocol like that (for Teamtype), but we'd like to open up the discussion: That's why we're inviting everyone interested to an initial online gathering on Feb 26, 19:00 UTC, to gauge interest for working on a protocol like this together! https://md.ha.si/collaborative-editing-protocol

Any #starling-el users out there who miraculously see this: Starling have removed the insights API, so the insights feature is broken right now. I plan to remove it when I have a sec. Everything else works as before though. #starlingbank #starling #emacs

@MegaMichelle@a2mi.social I think the war has been, is, and will always be about Vi & Emacs. It will never be about VSCode because the weight is different. Vi/Emacs is the Jomsviking of text editing. #Vi #Emacs #VSCode
