🧵 Everything right-wing seems to end up in religion and cryptoscams. So it's no surprise to see that Amelia, the goth racist character inadvertently made up by the UK Home Office, is now being used to shill a meme coin and going to church.

I expect the Jessica Foster character will be here soon.~

New York magazine published a 5,000 word article about MAGA women that barely mentioned radical Christian theology.

There's plenty of good reporting and interviewing, but the author barely touches on what's motivating his subjects: their deranged religious beliefs.

We can't delude ourselves about the far right. Overwhelmingly, it's religion that motivates these people. They are the American Taliban equivalent. And we should say this.

Donald Trump lies constantly, and yet almost never gets confronted to his face about his obvious deceptions. The New York Times's Shawn McCreesh did something today that should happen in every Trump news conference, he actually asked Trump about one of his most blatant lies. It did not go well for Trump:

AI critics are right that large language models are not alive or conscious. But what LLMs are doing is more complex than just "spicy autocomplete."

We need a more coherent definition of consciousness and a materialist way to derive where "what it's like" comes from.

Here's my initial idea for it: https://plus.flux.community/p/its-like-this-why-your-perception

Donald Trump's unprecedented attempt to cancel Anthropic is directly related to the fact that their CEO, Dario Amodei, has blasted Trump as a "clown" who acts like a "feudal warlord."

Among American AI companies, many of them are fascist Republicans, OpenAI tries to play both sides, and Anthropic is largely Democratic.

One of the biggest challenges that well-informed progressive people have is that even now, most people do not take Christian extremism seriously.

Such people should watch this clip. This is a totalitarian ideology that wants to control everyone's basic bodily acts and even their thoughts. https://youtu.be/SYUCPrVfbzk?t=1655

We need better discourse about AI. Most capacity believers lack knowledge of biology, philosophy, and psychology--and this makes them prone to callow exaggerations.

But many critics lack computing backgrounds and often have obsolete knowledge of LLMs.

Anthropic is really harming things by making false claims that disembodied Claude execution states could be conscious. https://www.theverge.com/report/883769/anthropic-claude-conscious-alive-moral-patient-constitution

In case you were wondering, before this morning's Iran attack, Polymarket had yet another spate of likely inside traders betting that the US would strike Iran by February 28. Per the due diligence investigation service Bubblemaps, the wallets used were first used 24 hours earlier. Betting prediction websites are national security risks, not Anthropic.

The Financial Times has produced the most unintentionally hilarious graph I've ever seen.

If you're going to promote a belief in a technological singularity, making a graph of it is nothing more than "and then a miracle occurs"

(Today's LLMs are not anywhere close to sentience because of their fundamental design structure. Details on why: https://flux.community/matthew-sheffield/2026/01/its-like-this-why-perceptions-are-our-realities/)

The most pernicious aspect of right-wing media is what they don't tell their audiences. The average Fox or Newsmax viewer has almost no knowledge of most of Trump's scandals and crimes. They think they're informed, when just the opposite is happening. Ignorance and mediocrity are why the religious zealotry, racism, gender supremacism work to control people. https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-wont-tell-viewers-uae-bought-trump

@Legit_Spaghetti@mastodo.neoliber.al @mattsheffield@mastodon.social I wouldn't even call what he did here an "argument". He just spat out a couple baseless, nonsense claims. One is demonstrably false

@crazyeddie@mastodon.social @Legit_Spaghetti@mastodo.neoliber.al Unfortunately, this is how most Trumpers argue. They're incredibly ignorant and only know what they had heard regurgitated from Fox. They really do think that stating their opinion is an argument. That's all that Matt Walsh ever does.

The far right's smartest people are deeply ignorant. This is why their policy ideas always end in disaster or corruption. Here's Curtis Yarvin showing he knows nothing about the history of civil disobedience. Henry David Thoreau invented the term in 1849, to describe practices that had existed long before that, such as in the work of Augustine who declared that unjust laws were not laws at all.

Dictatorship is a state of mind, not just for the ruler, but also in the people. To win, democracy advocates must: 1) Know and tell the full fascistic agenda of the people who puppet Trump, and 2) Understand and advocate for their own values https://plus.flux.community/p/the-liminal-states-of-america

🧵 The people of Minnesota, especially Renee Good and Alex Pretti, have shown that American democracy still has a lot of strength left within it.

But the battle is far from over. The US is in a liminal moment, a time of transition. We can do this, but there's much to know and to do. https://plus.flux.community/p/the-liminal-states-of-america

🧵 As a former Republican consultant who left in 2015, I'm often asked why Trump and his minions are willingly destroying science, K12 education, universities, international organizations, public broadcasting, and social welfare institutions.

There are many reasons, but the main ones are psychological rather than ideological. They struggle with abstract thinking and are afraid of the world...

The Christian right in the US got started as a rebellion against the Christian left and its religious program of taking Jesus seriously about helping "the least of these." I talked about that origin story with historian Gene Zubovich: https://plus.flux.community/p/to-understand-the-christian-right
