@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A3. Congrats on having a tubeless thread without any insane religious position crusaders. What's with this Masto audience - why aren't we incoherently yelling "I'm right" at each other? To answer. I've found tubeless fabulous YMMV as might your opinions. Much better ride, especially than something robust like Schwalbe marathons. Many many (many) saved punctures. I especially appreciated the massive hedge thorn I didn't even notice in the dark and sleet last month. But, they're just not worth the faff on a short trips utility bike or a bike you use infrequently. For longer rides or rides where fun is the aim they're great. But, they can be a rim/tyre combo minefield. Some combos are hard to initially seal, others are too tight. If I can't get the tyre off on the road and bang a tube in (as a last resort) it's no good to me. Low volume/high pressure tyres don't work as well either e.g. my old road frame permits max 25c. I've tried, it wasn't pretty.

@MartyCormack@urbanists.social @uxmark@mstdn.ca @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social but that cardinal is proper bling, worth 3x points ⚡ I think we're just a bit further ahead with the seasonal progress. Small as it is, you can still see a pretty big difference between Norfolk and Northumberland wrt the pace of Spring in the UK.

@v_perjorative@mastodon.org.uk Spa Cycles will make a decent hand built set for £235. I know not £200 (sorry!) but they're probably better quality than most factory options. https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m10b0s233p0/Wheels/Handbuilt-Wheelsets-%28650b-584%29

@wlukewindsor@c.im @jfparis@rouge.eu.org In case it helps... I have/had the same issue. I've got an 199x classic road race frame I love dearly. It used to be ok with my 199x body, less so with my 2026 body! (Neck & shoulder pain) Stem is slammed and also it's hard to lift the bars without criminal aesthetic acts. I did fit a set of those Spesh Hoover bars which lift up the front end by 15mm. That looks acceptable and wasn't expensive. I'm never doing an Audax on it, but it definitely helped.

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A8. On Wednesday I managed to sneak in my February RRtY #Audax ride (4 of 12). Leaving it till the end of the month meant I almost finished in the light & had a few bats for company on the final leg in the twilight. The route is a DIY creation forming a 200Km circle through 3 UK counties: Norfolk, Suffolk & Cambridgeshire. It's got a nice variation of landscape and quiet roads. There's even a bit of gravel (see last week ;-) ) as you cross Wicken Fen North of Cambridge on National Cycle route 1. If the light falls well (sunrise & sunset) it can be a magical landscape. If it doesn't it's generally a windy, featureless and uninspiring place. But, I kinda like that about it. The photo is near a vineyard in Suffolk - I think the photo is a field of hop poles. They should have nice associations, but I found them a bit disturbing in their winter bareness.

Couple of photos for you. I just made my route up following some of the Euro velo options. Happy to DM you details if interested. I didn't regret any of my choices.

@pete@masto.hypertelia.com nice, you'd never know it was a shed build. Those cranks are rather nice to have languished in a parts bin. We share a common status of having enough bike bits in the shed to build up almost complete bikes without buying anything. I've got at least 3 lots of MTB handlebars, a nice rear wheel for a 29er, a 2x 10 speed Deore groupset & some Rockshok Revos. Bike bingo!

@ravenbait@mastodon.scot @wisegreyowl@mastodonapp.uk yeah, I agree. There's a lot of value in the history and sense of place. (Despite the fact that a lot of what you see is actually latter day Victoriana Disney world update). But, basically it's not fit for purpose as a place of work where stuff gets done. +1 for Birmingham. Getting MPs out of London would solve wider issues too. But, I believe there's even a Yes Prime Minister on relocating the MoD. (Or something similar).

@arnodegroote@mastodon.social for some reason your post was accompanied, in my head, by the music to Rites of Spring. It'd be fun if your bike ride was also accompanied by that piece. But, I suspect you weren't riding with an orchestral peleton. Glad you got out.

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A5. Gravel is a transcendental multifaceted paradigm representing a bicycling state of mind. It's also the stuff from the quarry up the road coating our driveway. I use the term "mild off road" instead of gravel. I was not successful in my marketing career. The advertising stuff around gravel bikes & riding is hilariously out of control. But... I think it is useful as a term for differentiating mild off road (bridleways, forest tracks etc) from more technical mountain biking - where there'll be trail features (drops, jumps, berms, rock gardens) and you'll need skillz to keep your teeth. The problem is some things that look exactly like 'gravel' on a GoPro really aren't. Example: I arrived at the bottom of this about 24 hours slower than Meggie. It just looks harmless on YouTube. https://youtu.be/fnejusVbpWA

@gareth@tenforward.social it seems such an obvious thing to do. I've been shouting this at the radio for years. For once just selling most of it off to the private sector seems like a good idea. And yet...

@RustyFreewheel@aus.social Agree. Things didn't end particularly well for Caligula, Mussolini or even philosophers pedaling broken ideologies like Ayn Rand either. History is a comfort in dark times!

@dave@europhiles.uk I'm in a *similar* position. I've spent a long time in the open source world. Although mostly at Kernel & below. Obviously different projects can have very different cultures. I'd also like to try & make some modest engineering contributions post (recent) retirement. I actually spent more of my time at work waving my arms around & explaining open source to commercial people rather than doing any engineering! Anyways you didn't ask about me, so moving on from the unsolicited bio! https://goodfirstissue.dev/ is worth a look. If only in that it gives some inspiration for browsing GitHub/Gitlab & searching for tags (like `goodfirstissue`) or for projects using a specific language. If you also need to get used to the workflow (not intending to teach you to "suck eggs" maybe you don't!) maybe something like the TLDR command line examples project is good for limbering up to a new way of working. It's famously friendly. Hope that helps a bit.

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social Q8. Rode past Ely cathedral this week. It's nice you can coast to a stop right outside the entrance on your bike. Large and hard to miss since 1083! Very grey day and not a great photograph, but the cathedral doesn't really need any help from me with looking impressive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ely_Cathedral

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. thanks everyone, really enjoyed reading those. Also thanks as usual for hosting bikenite. It's becoming a thing. In common with a lot of you I'm hoping to do more touring. And maybe just incorporating it into ways of visiting old friends - so the journey is part of the fun not a chore. Also need to re-activate my Warm Showers free camping site. I met some great people bike touring on UK cycle route 1 in the year we hosted (before work went mad and I had to suspend it).

@wlukewindsor@c.im I keep hearing people say they want change & one can understand that. Hannah seems like the right kind of different, based on the bio and the few comments I've heard. The other guy, very much the wrong kind of different. Catsick on toast for breakfast is change, not all change is good! Fingers crossed it's a good national advert for alternatives to two party politics that aren't coupled to voting in corruption & unpleasantness.

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.socia #bikenitepq PQ) What do you hope to change about how, where and why you ride a bike? Already achieved cycling nirvana? Or looking to take a step on the ladder of pedaling enlightenment? (I can't decide if we've had this one before or not, but if we haven't...)

@AnnMyhre @Ilka_Arndt thanks for that link. I'm strangely addicted to photos of normal people on bikes doing normal things. PS. This is an excellent slogan: "I would recommend to become an old woman not giving a shit. "
