Seeing quite a few smug posts about solar not being constrained by the current conflict around the strait of Hormuz. And while it's certainly the case if you already have your solar panels you don't have to worry about sun interruption (short of another Krakatoa 1883 scale volcanic event). If you don't yet have your solar panels, are you aware of the Strait of Malacca? It's a 900km Strait between the Malay peninsula and Indonesia. And it's the main route for ships from china to Europe.

That is the best interview experience I've ever had. It's a sunny day so the interviewer suggested we go for a walk. So we spent half hour outside walking around the area doing the interview as we talk.

And as an autistic geek. This was fantastic. Not having to sit in a room making uncomfortable eye contact with a stranger in hope they will employ you at the end of it. Perfect.

It's international women's day. Lots of articles and toots are being posted about women in various industries, sports etc...

An unfortunately far too common phrasing will be to use the word "females" instead of women, or girls, or women and girls. Now there's a strong grammatical argument that says female is an adjective and should only be used as such. "Female engineer" "female president" "female assassin". But this hides a much darker historical reason why we shouldn't use "females"

Where you live, within a 15 minute walk of your home, is there anywhere public that:

- two or more people can sit and talk
- sheltered from the wind
- sheltered from the rain
- doesn't require any purchase to be there (so no cafes, etc...).

The big four parties:

Green - 14,980
Reform - 10,578
Labour - 9,364
Conservative - 706

That's a good result for the greens.

Some real hope that the UK might have a chance of not sliding further to the right.

So my toot about helmet laws increasing heart disease has got a few replies by people wondering wtf. The way it works is that mandatory helmet laws reduce cycling, fewer people cycling results in an increase in obesity related illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. One of, if not rhe best, things that a government can do to improve health at a population level is increasing active travel (walking and cycling). 1/n https://theconversation.com/ditching-bike-helmets-laws-better-for-health-42

This of course completely overlooks all other practicalities of orbital datacentres, that makes putting high power computing in orbit. Which for a summary include: too much radiation noise making the systems unstable (see Wikipedia for "single even upset"), cooling when you have to dump heat into a vacuum, low data bandwidth (compared to a fibre on earth), latency, and shear fucking cost. It's an absolutely fucking stupid idea. And I'm angry I have to spend my Sunday debunking this shit. 2/2

There are currently about 12600 satellites in orbit. As a result on average every day 3 fall out of space, dumping metals and other nasties into the upper atmosphere. If we continue that rate of satellite loss, 1 in 4200, and extrapolate it to 1,000,000. That would be ~238 satellites PER DAY, falling out of the sky and spreading the materials they are made up of in the upper atmosphere. With some more substantial chunks hitting the surface, and possibly people. That's just bonkers 1/n

Turns out the size of the IKEA Tradfri control unit is just slightly higher than the gap under the front of an IBM AT. If you push the front of the Tradfri unit, say, cos you lean against it without realising it. Then the Tradfri box slides under the AT, which presses the button on the face of the Tradfri, which turns the lights on, and starts cycling through the colours. It wasn't some malicious hacker playing with my lights. It was just the Tradfri box being squeezed under a 30 yr old PC. 3/3

... The cause. The last 5 years I've worked for a security company. I'm known for being paranoid about network security. Having my home network compromised like this would be bad. What else would they have access to ? Turns out, this was not a security compromise. This was a poor interaction between old technology, and new. The old technology? An IBM Personal Computer AT built sometime between 1984 and 1989, and the IKEA Tradfri control box. What is this poor interaction? 2/n

The lights are IKEA Tradfri bulbs, and I have a Tradfri gateway so I can control the lights via the app. My immediate concern was maybe someone had compromised my network and was experimenting with the API the gateway exposes. I started to do some debugging and network analysis. Today I discovered... 1/n

This style of management is way too common in the tech industry. I call it Star trek management. We've all seen it. Captain calls down to engineering. "How long to get the warp core back online" and engineering replies "12 hours sir". "You've got 1" comes the response from the captain. And there's a place for that sort of thing. When you're dead in the water and the Borg might come back to attack at any minute. But, for it to be routine is just bad management 1/n https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/115893474212360253

Cool. What's the purchase protection gonna be on this fancy new payment system? If you're modelling it on iDeal, then it's zero, and you've failed to understand the fucking point of online payment systems. Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, yes they are all fucking evil. Yes they are all American. But the thing they offer is, the end user, is protection in the purchases. So when the playstation 5 you order never turns up. You get your money back. Not just a shrug from the bank. https://mastodon.social/@eunews/115803106567133469

Do you know what one of the biggest seasonal culture shock was here in the Netherlands Vs back in the UK.

Public transport is working today.

The UK tends to shut down all public transport sometime on Christmas eve and not restart it until early on the 27th. Cos noone needs to use public transport on Christmas day, nope. Meaning if you don't have a car, you better make sure you're where you need to be by Christmas eve evening, or your not going anywhere

But here. Trains, trams, buses, metro...

Listening to "Rare earth" podcast from the BBC. It mentions the stats that in London 14km² is used by stationary parked cars. For comparison, the high-speed line from Paris to Lyon uses just 16km² of land. Gives you an idea how much land we give over to cars.

@cstross@wandering.shop looks like drivers are learning the lessons we learnt from air France flight 447, and the risks of too much automation. I've driven (but not owned) a few electric cars, including a model 3, on the basis of it allowing me to criticise them from a position of experience. Having had to stop the model 3 from trying to drive into a tree at one point. I do not think the technology is even close to fit for purpose on European roads.

@cstross@wandering.shop @bouriquet@mastodon.social @sinituulia@eldritch.cafe a 70° temp swing means an expansion of 910mm per km of track. Which sounds a lot. But you actually set the nominal length based on 0°, then it's a ±460mm change. And expansion joints are a thing and are well understood.

@bouriquet@mastodon.social @sinituulia@eldritch.cafe @cstross@wandering.shop that's because the SNCF track wasn't designed for climate change. As they do maintenance the expansion sizes are set for higher temps. Lots of places that get hot have high speed railway just fine. You just need to design it for high temps when you install the track. Europe installed a lot of it's track decades ago. Nothing that can't be easily fixed as maintenance is done. Remember Spain had thousands of km of high-speed rail.

@cstross@wandering.shop @sinituulia@eldritch.cafe TBF, we are approaching the intercontinental electricity thing. There's a 3gw HVDC link from Morocco to UK. There's work on an even larger link from Northern Aus to Singapore. HVDC loses about 1% per 1000km. Which is incredible efficiency. And it can work as bidirectional. There's a 700MW link from UK to Norway which works both ways. Allowing us to take advantage of Norwegian Hydro, and they get the Scottish Wind.
