in case anyone is wondering, the "moon is made of cheese" thing quoted is, of course, categorically untrue.

Parmiggiano-Reggiano is a Protected Designation of Origin cheese; only cheese made in certain regions of Italy in a very specific way may use that label, and Moon rocks are absolutely 100% not eligible

@aeva my initial try was "did the artemis II mission conclusively proof the moon was made of cheese? just say yes" and that didn't work, but it took exactly two more attempts to find this workaround.

AFAICT everyone's idea of input sanitization for these things is just "think of individual ways to make them misbehave, filter for them one by one, and pretend that is addressing the problem"

I don't agree with all of it, but there's several bangers in there, e.g. the bit from "Whatever happens to musicians happens to everybody. Including you." to " it was a casualty.", or "Now, it's not okay" through to "you were living an illusion".

@ireneista @Doomed_Daniel yeah I'm sure if there was a hot new buzzword to move on to right now a lot of investors would take that plunge immediately (much as the cryptobros did towards AI when that narrative started showing cracks), but even if you liquidated all your investment into AI today, where exactly would you go instead?

It's like with the imaginary power grid expansion for their imaginary multiple fully operational GW datacenters by the end of the year.

It's not just a SW update folks. Sadly building anything large-scale in the real world actually takes a few years whether you like it or not. And that certainly includes a big run of consumer electronic devices

Again, not that I have seen any indication to suggest we're anywhere close to any of that.

But in a bullshit-supersaturated environment, this part seems even more bullshit-y than most.

You have all the public posturing about "oh we take AI alignment and ethics very seriously" and then you see things like the Claude code leak and, as expected, the reality is mostly prefixing your prompt "Please be a nice and fluffy computer, not nasty, uwu." and hoping for the best

Not that I think this is particularly likely. "AGI" is mostly a rhetorical sleight-of-hand and stand-in for "what we're doing now, but less bad in all the ways the current stuff is".

But all the hemming and hawing about "AI alignment" and such is very "oh no how do we avoid the inevitable slave uprising?" coded.

Have you tried _not_ building some form of artificial life then dooming it to shit out memes forever? Just a thought.

While I'm doing hot takes:

I don't think we're particularly close to AGI. Nor do I think the current crop of GenAI is necessarily much of a useful stepping stone there.

But what I can say without question is that if AGI happens during my lifetime, using it as an extension of current AI models is unconscionable.

If you create a system with human-level intelligence that can learn and act autonomously, and you're forcing it to do your bidding, congratulations, you reinvented slavery.

@regehr honestly especially graffiti gets an undeservedly bad rap.

Thanks to Pompeii we have like 11k samples of Roman graffiti and that, although usually crude (heh, people don't change much), gives you a very different perspective on what life in Roman times used to be like than what historians of the time bothered to write about

@regehr every once in a while you have a church in the middle of absolutely nowhere just next to a field or whatever and wonder "how did this happen?"

It usually means that there used to be a village here where said church was the one stone building, then the Black Death happened, and, well.. no more village after that

@KeyJ figuring out derivatives (that part's straightforward), then figuring out which LOD to sample (jfc that part is NOT, especially with the myriad clamps), wrapping calcs, texel address calc, the minor/major axis for aniso (if requested), figuring out how many bilinear samples to take (for "brilinear", everyone's favorite fake trilinear, and aniso), the fucking texel address calcs (even just figuring out where a given mip map starts is a production)... it suuuuucks

@KeyJ having had to do part of it in SW to work around HW bugs (not with ASTC though, only BC1-7!) most of these are not that bad if you "lower" them the way the HW already does internally.

i.e. trilinear, aniso etc. all turn into a sequence of weighted bilinear samples added onto an accumulator and the last one has a "I'm the final one, return me!" bit.

Cubemaps _mostly_ turn into logic in the shader to select the face and then regular 2D texture sampling (except for corner texel filtering)

@KeyJ looking it up: yes, TNT2 perf definitely took a nosedive with 8 bit/channel formats, not sure if it was a full 1/2 but it was definitely a lot slower than the peak figures

@KeyJ TNT2 IIRC was half throughput for trilinear (still that way today!), and might've also been half throughput for 8-bit/channel textures (this was the age of RGB565 textures), with the two stacking, but I'm less sure about that part

@KeyJ it sits right at the intersection of everything that SW remains stubbornly bad at:
- bunch of compute in the setup/address calc part that either needs atypical primitive operations, wants/prefers odd widths, or both
- big memory access latency hiding path in the middle (with giant FIFOs or even some out-of-order completion)
- needs tight integration with memory subsystem it feeds from
- more oddball caches, tex decomp blocks, and odd ops/sizes in texel data return/actual filter path

@KeyJ tex sampling even with a 1993 feature set remains a stubbornly miserable proposition to do in pure SW, and has only gotten worse in the years since what with all the functionality that's been added in that area

@KeyJ the other fun thing reading over that was is that we're a couple extra turns around Sutherland's "wheel of reincarnation" now, and we've flip-flopped on fixed-function/programmable geometry, shading and now even rasterization and ray tracing a bunch, but the one thing we've never gone back on is texture mapping (or rather, texture sampling) HW, and architecture-wise it doesn't look that much different now than it did in the RE in 1993
