In fact it's worse than the situation was back then.
In the early 90's 8 metre class telescopes were clearly the next big thing, and while it was crucial for Australian astronomy to secure access in order to avoid being left behind a lot could still be done with Australia's domestic astronomy facilities.
Now, however, 8 metre class telescopes are the workhorses of research astronomy. Losing access would have a significantly bigger impact now that in the 90's.
Furthermore, it isn't just about telescope time. Australian astronomers have pointed out all along that while it is possible for Australia to be merely a customer, buying time on telescopes here and here, it would be far, far better for Australia to become a member of one of the organisations operating the large overseas observatories. That way we don't just get to use the telescopes, we also get a say in the scientific priorities of the observatory, get opportunities to take part in technology development work, and secure contracts for equipment construction in Australia. The returns on investment in terms of science, technical capabilities and industry development are clearly far better, but Australia has a commitment problem when it comes to science funding.

Some context to help understand the depth of frustration here. The Australian astronomical community has been trying to get Australian governments to commit to a long term arrangement for access to large optical/infrared telescopes for as long as 8 metre class telescopes have existed.
30 years ago the Astronomy Decadal Plan 1996-2005 was published, and stated "The first priority of the astronomical community remains the same as it was in 1989, viz. to obtain significant access to a large optical/infrared telescope. To achieve this end the Review Committee believes that Australia should immediately accept the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) invitation to join ESO..."
Instead what followed were a series of temporary and ad-hoc arrangements supported by one-off funding from various sources, which enabled Australian astronomer to buy some telescope time from, for example, the Gemini and Magellan observatories. Governments repeatedly balked at anything involving more a few years of commitment until 2017, when we finally got the 10 year Strategic Partnership with ESO: https://www.eso.org/public/about-eso/strategicpartners/australianinvolvement/
Now the government has announced that they will not convert the Strategic Partnership to full membership of ESO, and have not committed any funding for alternative arrangements either. Australian astronomers feel like after decades of making their case they are right back to square one, in exactly the same situation as they were in in the early 1990's.

The Reevo is like a physical embodiment of wilful ignorance; ignorance about why good bicycles are designed in the way that they are.
They started with a bad idea (hubless wheels) and proceeded to build something that fails a literally everything that's good about a good bicycle.

I decided not to have a go myself. I would not have been able to race with the kid because of the age groupings (4-6, 7-12, 13+) and that diminished the appeal, plus I've been spending more than enough time driving the two tonne electric go kart that we brought with us from Sydney.
In the 9 days since we arrived in Brisbane we've racked up about 500 km, in addition to the 1000 km from the drive up.

We get them big at home too, but I reckon the golden orb weavers/tiger spiders/Trichonephila plumipes get a bit bigger up here in Brisbane.
Both of these are females, but in the first photo there is also a male above the female in her web. The males are much, much smaller.

Whatever we get won't be anywhere near as good as the ESO package of course, and I would put money on the Australian government failing to make a timely decision on it so that we end up with no telescope access at all for some period of time after the ESO Strategic Partnership expires.

Australian scientists and engineers, along with colleagues in Italy, Germany and France, are currently developing and building a cutting edge instrument for one of ESO's telescopes, MAVIS: https://astronomyaustralia.org.au/blog/news/mavis-a-bold-leap-in-australian-led-astronomy-and-adaptive-optics/
When this instrument is installed on the telescope in the early 2030s it will allow the ESO user community to obtain visible light imaging and spectroscopy with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. With the decision to not join ESO that user community will not include Australian astronomers.
Because of the way that ESO procures scientific instruments Australia will still receive a certain amount of telescope time to use MAVIS in exchange for the Australian share of the labour costs associated with its design and construction. That will amount to about 200 nights, which is certainly not nothing, but once those are gone Australia will lose all access to this Australian led instrument.

With characteristic disregard for science and technology the Australian government has decided that Australia will not become a full member of the European Southern Observatory (@esoastronomy) when the current interim Strategic Partnership arrangement expires at the end of 2027.
This leaves the Australian astronomical community, once again, with no clear pathway to access large optical/infrared telescopes, which are vital to ongoing research.
The astronomical community in Australia has long recognised joining ESO as the best way to secure this access long term, along with access to a host of other facilities and other important benefits such as technology development and industrial manufacturing contracts. Today we went to Roma Street Parklands, the best place in central Brisbane for communing with dragons.
The Eastern Water Dragons there are very used to having lots of humans around, and will happily pose for photos while you close to within almost arm's reach of them.

Road trip underway! We're taking our BYD Seal from Sydney to Brisbane via the New England Highway, with an overnight stop in a motel in Tamworth.
One recharge at Cameron Park on the way which we probably could have skipped, but since we wanted to stop to grab a quick bite to eat for dinner anyway I did take the opportunity to top up.
That's just under 400 km driven, tomorrow we'll do the remaining 700 km.

The Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2050 has been approved by the NSW State Government. Buried in that plan, but never explicitly stated, is the obliteration of the 2000 Olympic Games archery venue.
The plan mentions in passing "repurpose of the Archery Centre building as a community centre" and the "provision of four sports fields" without noting that means closure of the Archery Centre, eviction of Sydney Olympic Park Archers club, and replacement of the archery range with two of those new sports fields. There will be no new archery range, there's nowhere to relocate to, it will simply be the end of archery in Sydney Olympic Park.
I'm told that the archery club will be granted a lease until 2031 but after that it's all over, and it's not like there are archery ranges all over the place and it's easy to find somewhere else to do it. Closing a big range and club in a central, accessible location like this will have a big impact on the sport in Sydney.

A small bit of good news for Australian electric car owners ahead of the Easter holidays: bp pulse fast chargers can now be used via a Chargefox account.

One of the annoyances of road tripping in an EV in Australia is that you can't, generally, just pull up at a DC fast charger and tap your credit card to start charging. In most cases you need to have installed a phone app from the charger network operator, created an account, and registered a payment method. Consequently preparing for a long trip might mean installing and configuring half a dozen or so different charging apps.
bp pulse chargers being available through Chargefox means one fewer app and account is required, a small step in the right direction.
Ideally none of this nonsense would be needed, and all DC fast chargers would at least give you the option of just tapping a payment card, with no app or account required. I know from experience hiring an EV while on holiday in the UK that these apps can be a major problem for overseas visitors as they are often region locked and not available unless your phone is registered locally, and they also need mobile data to function. At least in the UK most of the chargers would just accept a credit card instead, not so here.
