@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io The biggest cattle concentration near Denver is to the northeast in Weld County. You can only usually smell it when there's a storm coming and the winds reverse. The stench of warning.

The Douglas F5D Skylancer was an ambitious design let initially down by its mediocre engine (the notoriously garbage Westinghouse J40), and was obsolete by the time a better engine was available. But wow did look stunning in NASA orange paint, as part of the Dyna Soar program.

So first of all SLS is garbage. Always has been, always will be, it's never been redeemable from day one. But SLS Block IB is (was?) the worst. It was totally unnecessary, extremely expensive, and violated the prime lesson of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board by mixing crew and cargo. And it required a completely different MLP that was a massive money pit and will probably now be scrapped. Cancelling EUS (and thus Block IB) is so gd obvious that of course it was the first thing Jared did. But it's clearly not going to stop with that, no are the Boeing-bought senators gonna roll over and let it happen. The illusion of continuity that Nelson pathetically promulgated is now broken, and it's Moon Chaos from here to the end of the decade. Ad Luna, per aspera

Ok it was genuinely hilarious watching the reporting narrative about Gorton & Denton shift around to everywhere except for what the final result actually was. That wasn't even close. And yeah, there are comparisons to Mamdami, but only in his primary upset. By the actual mayoral election, he was already a national figure.

@EF@mastodon.bsd.cafe @jon@gruene.social Counterpoint: No, not really. Overhead electrification works fine for main lines, and batteries are enough for branch lines and in yards. 90% of the technology you need for battery trains is already extremely well funded for cars. Hydrogen is irrelevant.

@synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net I don't know much about the Chinese regulatory environment, but that doesn't sound promising

@mral@mastodon.sdf.org @AkaSci@fosstodon.org High. The official rule is that once someone becomes a politician, they cannot have an asteroid named after them until 100 years after they are dead. But if they already have an asteroid when they become a politician (like was the case for AOC), they don't lose it. So she's one of *very few* living politicians in the world with an asteroid.

If you are remotely surprised about the Artemis/SLS delay, remember that this is a mission that was supposed to happen in 2015. And that the leaky SLS core stage was built by the same organization that built the most dangerous and poorly built human spacecraft in history.

@mike_malaska@deepspace.social @michael_w_busch@mastodon.online The Uranian sats have CO2, despite low albedo, and they're not that much cooler. Catching a exosphere in occultations has proved tricky, though.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org JSX is gambling big on being a mostly ATR airline going forward, with direct support from ATR. They are trying to carve out the niche for small airport in big city service that isn't Essential Air Service supported.

@wikkit@mastodon.social I guess at least the escape system was designed for Ares 1, so at least it's designed to get the crew away quick, even if it breaks a few ribs in the process...

@synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net Given the less-than-stellar record of 5-seg SRBs on the test stand, it's certainly not impossible. And that's part of the scam with 5-seg overall, trying to lean on the record of Shuttle's 4-seg safety history (it only actually killed a crew once!) while ignoring that 5-seg puts the same hardware under considerably higher stresses/pressures and hopes nothing goes wrong.
