Any journalists want to write an article about all the environmental costs of the more than 10,000 Starlinks that are now in orbit? All I'm seeing are breathless articles mindlessly worshiping That Awful Billionaire for crossing the 10,000 satellite mark. Every single one of those will come down in an uncontrolled reentry. That's a lot of metal in the atmosphere, and a lot of dice-rolling to see if any more pieces will make it to the ground. SpaceX is truly awful.

My poll about mansplaining was mansplained to me. Deleted. Done. Time to sign off for a bit. Please submit your FCC comments about why you think Reflect Orbital's idea for giant mirrors in orbit is terrible. Tomorrow (March 9) is the last day to submit, instructions here: https://darksky.org/news/two-satellite-proposals-threaten-the-night-sky-the-window-to-act-is-now/

Trying to dig through my email pile from the last week of various disasters, and I'm delighted to see that there's a talk series being organized by my fellow professors critiquing the constant genAI/LLM use that the university seems to keep mindlessly pushing. Yay awesome professors!

Submitted! I am an astronomer who has asked nicely for years for SpaceX to be safer in orbit, think about ways to use fewer satellites, think about the consequences of burning up so many satellites, and think about ways to make their satellites darker. This filing proposing a million satellites is a clear "fuck you" from SpaceX to the entire astronomy community, as well as the entire planet. So, fuck you, too, SpaceX!

RE: @sundogplanets@mastodon.social

Deadlines for comments on a million SpaceX "AI data centers" and a company that wants to deliver "sunlight as a service" are coming up soon. If you have time and energy, please write a comment! Instructions below.

(I heard a rumour that Reflect Orbital is on-track to have the most comments on an FCC filing ever. Seems like a good goal to beat the record writing responses to this incredibly fucking stupid idea)

Also instructions here: https://darksky.org/news/two-satellite-proposals-threaten-the-night-sky-the-window-to-act-is-now/

There are over 600 comments submitted on Reflect Orbital's filing at the FCC!! That's amazing, especially given how hard the FCC has made the submission process.

If you want to submit your own comment (on this or SpaceX's million sat filing), there's still a few more days to do that, and instructions are here: https://aas.org/posts/advocacy/2026/02/how-submit-comments-satellite-applications-fcc

Ready for a horror show that is different than the current news cycle? This is code that @hannorein@mastodon.social, Aaron Boley, and I put together for modelling Starlinks. We scaled up the brightness based on what we think could be the size of these stupid new "AI datacenters" that SpaceX says they will launch a million of, and used the orbits posted on @planet4589.bsky.social's website I'll walk you through this plot in the following posts.

Kia Ora, Invercargilll!

I still owe the world a few posts about my time on Stewart Island Rakiura because that was completely incredibly amazing. But the only internet access I had was through the public library, which has a Starlink antenna on top, which made me feel pretty gross.

Say it with me again, everyone: rural and remote places need internet access that is not controlled by and enriching an American billionaire!! #ProfSamLectureTour

I have an interview soon that's supposed to be about "finding Planet 9 with the Vera Rubin Observatory", and I'm going to see if I can hijack it into an interview about satellite pollution instead. I'm quite convinced that there is not another giant 10x Earth-mass planet out there waiting to be discovered, but there's a super interesting story written into the orbits of distant TNOs, waiting to be uncovered about our solar system's history, and it's going to get obliterated by satellite streaks

Too wound up to go to bed, so I just sent lots of emails to people hoping that they'll spread the word and get lots more people to write comments to the FCC telling them that orbital data centres and sunlight-as-a-service are incredibly stupid, dangerous ideas and should never be launched.

Instructions how to submit here: https://darksky.org/news/two-satellite-proposals-threaten-the-night-sky-the-window-to-act-is-now/

I don't think it'll actually make a big difference. But I do think it's incredibly important that the official record shows how many opposed this.

Just another shout of appreciation for public libraries! Wellington has at least one good one (I strongly suspect more than one but I'm not going to be here for long enough to double check that).

Lovely place to sit and catch up on everything before heading to the south island in a few hours. The vast majority of the rest of the #ProfSamLectureTour will be from Christchurch and I'm really looking forward to staying in one city for more than a day or two!

Reflect Orbital wants to destroy the night sky to deliver "sunlight as a service". SpaceX wants to destroy Low Earth Orbit to launch one million "AI datacentres"

The only way to formally protest these two ideas is to file a comment with the US FCC, which is horribly complicated, but the American Astronomical Society has detailed instructions posted here: https://aas.org/posts/advocacy/2026/02/how-submit-comments-satellite-applications-fcc

Comments due March 6 for SpaceX and March 9 for Reflect Orbital. Write! Write! Write!

Well, everyone, you can now submit a comment to let the FCC know what you think about SpaceX asking for 1 million satellites for "AI datacenters" whatever the fuck that means.

https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-113A1.pdf

Comments due March 6.

I am having a very hard time believing this is really happening. Fuck you, SpaceX, and fuck you, FCC. This is not regulation, this is a fucking joke, that will destroy our ability to use satellites for centuries.

I hope that some of the (many, many, many) conversations I'm going to have today make a difference for at least one of the gigantic awful problems that are happening right now. I guess that's as good as I can hope to do. Sending peace (and productive anger, where needed).

A paper from a few years ago by Dung et al. looked at how often programmers were not credited as authors in genetics research papers from the 1970s and 1980s, but were acknowledged as programmers who ran the code for the analysis, and how often those uncredited scientists were women https://academic.oup.com/genetics/article/211/2/363/5931132?login=false It used to be very common practice to have a programmer do your analysis for you, and they weren't considered a co-author (probably because many were women)

Did a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation with a collaborator for AST SpaceMobile's fucking huge satellite launched last month and will unfurl soon. We got mag -12. The full moon is -13, magnitudes are logarithmic. It's a little fainter than the moon, at least? We made lots of assumptions, so this number is quite uncertain, but it's pretty clear that no matter what, it'll be eye-blazingly-bright. And they want 400 of them. I hate AST SpaceMobile almost as much as I hate Reflect Orbital.

I have not updated my Starlink numbers in a while, and great flying fuckballs, is it ever bad. We are now up to 9,422 Starlink satellites in orbit, out of 14,046 total active satellites. 1,446 Starlinks have reentered and added their 500-1500kg of computers, batteries, solar panels, and aluminum frame to the upper atmosphere (and at least one has hit the ground).
