Number 6 Claremont Terrace in the West End of Glasgow. Designed by John Baird in a Classical style, it was originally built in 1842 as a freestanding mansion before being converted into a terrace in 1847.
Between 1869 and 1906, it was the home of the philanthropist Isabella Elder who funded many causes around the city, but particularly those related to education, especially of women.

A final post on the Union Street fire for now. Thanks to all the firefighters from the Scottish fire and Rescue Service who worked tirelessly late into the night to ensure the fire was as contained as possible and didn't spread to the surrounding buildings of Central Station, which would have been even more devastating to the city's architectural heritage.

The view from Gordon Street, showing the remaining facade of the Union Corner building. With nothing to support it and due to the heat from the fire, it's likely to be structurally unsound.
On the left is the Ca'D'Oro, another listed building at the same junction, which was gutted by a fire 1987, but was successfully rebuilt within a couple of years, although it has an iron facade which made this much easier to achieve.

There's currently a major fire on Union Street in the centre of Glasgow. There are no reports of casualties, but apparently parts of the building involved have collapsed.
As far as I can work out from the news footage, it's the building in the centre of this photo (which I took last year) which has been affected.

Roe deer amongst the gravestones in Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow this morning. Opened in 1840, on what was, until then, farmland, it's typical of the garden cemeteries created in the Victorian era, which were designed as much for the the living to visit as they were a final resting place for the dead. Even now, garden cemeteries like this one provide a tranquil green space in the city, as well as an oasis for wildlife.

The end wall of 1 Moray Place in the Strathbungo area of Glasgow. Built in 1859, it was designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson as part of a terrace of Classical Townhouses. Thomson himself lived here with his family between 1861 and his death in 1875.

Crossmyloof Mansions at Shawlands Cross in Glasgow. This is another of Glasgow's magnificent 19th century gushet tenement buildings with, of course, space for a pub on the ground floor. I always think buildings like this look like giant stone trams just getting ready to move off down the street.

Looking up at the central oculus in the rather stunning dome of the Hamilton Mausoleum to the southeast of Glasgow. Built as the final resting place for the Dukes of Hamilton in the 1840s and 1850s, it was designed by David Hamilton, with additions by David Bryce and Alexander Handyside Ritchie.

This morning I saw my first daffodils of the year in Victoria Park in Glasgow. It might seem unlikely, but today's popularity of these Spring blooms is all down to a man called Peter Barr. Born in Govan in 1826, Barr became enchanted with the yellow blooms, which had fallen out of fashion in the Victorian era, partly due to the Queen's dislike of them.

The font used on the gateposts of the former Haghill Public School in the East End of Glasgow is just superb. Designed by A. Lindsay Miller and built in 1904, the school was demolished in 2022, but it's hoped some of the original features, including the gateposts, will be incorporated in the affordable housing planned for the site.

These are some of my favourite townhouses in the west end of Glasgow. Situated on Dowanside Road, they were designed by David Barclay and were built around 1900 as part of a development of similar houses in this area.

La Pasionaria on Clyde Street in Glasgow. A favourite of many people, this statue is a memorial to the 2,100 British volunteers who fought for the Republican cause against Franco’s forces in the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. Of these, 534 died, including 65 from Glasgow.

The 1840s draw-off tower at Waulkmill Glen Reservoir near Darnley to the south of Glasgow. This was part of the Gorbals Gravitation Water Company development desighed by the engineer William Gale to supply clear water to the Gorbals area of Glasgow.

The Romanesque style former Prince's Dock hydraulic power station on the south side of the Clyde in Glasgow. Designed by Burnet, Son and Campbell, it was built in 1894 for the Clyde Navigation Trust. In the foregound is the accumulator tower into which water was pumped and held under pressure to provide power to the dock's various cranes, lifts and other equipment.

A beautifully crafted owl capital on a barley twist column to the left of the door of the Tennent Memorial Building on Church Street in Glasgow. This represents night, and on the opposite side of the door is a similar column with a rooster capital, representing day.

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow in looking magnificent against today's blue skies. Designed by William B. Whitie in an Edwardian Baroque style and opened in 1911, it's one of the largest public reference libraries in Europe. The two statues in this shot are Wisdom by Thomas John Clapperton (seated) and Literature by Johan Keller (on the top of the dome).

The Art Deco brilliance of the former Beresford Hotel on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow looking at its best in today's sunshine. Built in 1937, it was designed by William Beresford Inglis, who later went on to manage and own it.

The Lion Chambers on Hope Street in Glasgow. Designed by James Salmon Jnr in a mix of Glasgow Style and Scottish Baronial, it was built in 1905 using the Hennebique System of reinforced concrete, but is now in a rather sad state.

Love this doorway on Southpark Avenue in the West End of Glasgow. It's part of Gildard and Macfarlane's 1850s Belgrave Terrace which I featured earlier today, but while the entrances on the main facade facing Great Western Road are relatively plain, this one is much more decorative.

With the Winter Olympics underway, curling is one again getting mainstream media coverage. However, curling was once a much more popular sport and even in Glasgow outdoor curling rinks were relatively common. However, as far as I'm aware, they've all now disppeared, except for this one in Victoria Park, and even then it's no longer used for curling and is in pretty poor condition.

Seems like someone forgot about how big the Spring tides are at this time of year are when desiging this floating pontoon beside the Pointy Bridge on the Clyde in Glasgow. In case you're wondering, the difference between this evening's low and high tides will be 5.03 metres (usually its less than 4 metres).
