@winkwinkerson That might depend on your perception and definition of great in this context. Our perspectives are clearly different and I think we'll just agree to disagree on that.

@tempusfelix @azonenberg @ahltorp The MRP and LRP meals are dried, even things that are liquid are so heavily extracted that you need to drink a lot of water if you consume them. C-Rats were a bit better because they had things actually in cans. But they also contained some dehydrated food products. I specifically remember the beef patty. It looked vaguely like a burger, but if you couldn't rehydrate it and had to just eat it dry, it was a dog biscuit. If you've stored dehydrated foods and you haven't stored a water processing unit, you're just fooling yourself.

@isagalaev @wezm I think not. To properly use the seasons, you have to qualify them. Even in the northern hemisphere. I'm in the USA, and if I'm talking winter new Mexico, that's the 62 day period when you might get snow in the morning, but it will be gone by noon. If you're talking winter in some parts of Alaska, you're talking about the best nine months of the year. And of course, if you're talking about anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere you have totally flipped expectations unless you say where it is in the southern hemisphere. Why is it so hard for people to figure out that the planet is a globe?

@mhoye Let us say you are a parent and you think that having operating systems report the age of the user is a good idea. The browser connects to a social media site and it asks and the browser pulls the operating system and gets the age group and reports it to the social media site. Now the site only presents age-appropriate material, right? Except if there are predators on that site watching that flag: And what they have now is a clear and updated indicator for what accounts represent vulnerable young people who have not the knowledge to defend themselves. A victim list, if you will. /S isn't that a wonderful idea? S/..

@grote pretty, but I do not see how you start a manual update scan of the repos. Or how you do manual app updates. Those were normal procedures I do at least once daily with the older version. It should be interesting to see how this differs.

@warandpeas I have to say that technically, this is not the internet. This is a piece of the World Wide Web, which is a subset of the internet, because the internet includes telnet-connected bulletin board systems and Archie sites and Gemini sites and FTP sites and all kinds of things that you can't necessarily interact with with a browser I love it, but oh man, is it messy?!!

@jolla I am so looking forward to the day that the prices for the extra components memory especially drop. But not more than I'm looking forward to when this becomes available virtually worldwide There are some Linux phones available in the USA, but they cost down the order of a thousand dollars or more. And frankly, I trust your phones more.

@fdroidorg in a way, this may be a good thing. No, put down the pitchforks and torches. Hear me out. This is going to explode demand for Linux and alternative operating system phones. Profits and therefore resources for additional development may explode in that space, and I plan to help it. My current Android phone is less than a year old, but my next phone is not going to run Android. And I have owned a phone from that little fruit company and I'm not going there ever again!

@ics I get it that you will probably never write that novel, but maybe you could write it as a short story. Because I would buy that short story. And I'm an old ornery man that is so white and privileged that I glow in the dark. And I still get it.

@lexinova@cyberplace.social @krutonium @anthropy @kde @BrodieOnLinux I have dealt with the whole SystemD controversy by running distributions that do not use System D and running a little BSD on the side. And that is very much the Linux community way of dealing with things. If you don't like the way something is done, do something else. 😁 As for the PLM controversy, I never felt for the scam in the first place. Nothing was ever posted by the KDE team indicating that there was ever a requirement for PLM. It's an option for those who want it on SystemD core systems. If you're going to avoid those anyway, you never need to worry about it.

@FediThing I found one that's AM, FM, and shortwave for about $10. It's about $20 if you add weather radio Either of these will run on AA batteries and fit in your pocket. I wish I had the old one that I had in my 20s because it was a cabinet about three feet tall with seven knobs and a wire coil antenna that was most of the bottom of the cabinet and the rest was a huge speaker. On the back, there was a connection for a long wire antenna if you had to go DX. (DX = long range) no transistors, just 7 vacuum tubes, and everything except portable, but I really miss it.
