@ChateauErin I just try to be mindful of what I'm participating in at a cultural level - it's easy for this sort of stuff to end up fetishised, and it's more than a little creepy to see people making YouTube ad revenue, etc. off clips of it. Feels healthy to have mixed feelings.

@ChateauErin I imagine so! I can't speak for him, but I know that in his position, a forward, public-facing statement that honours the death of a loved one is what I would be intending to put out there, and ultimately, that is what's on screen.
It's powerful and important to see adults (particularly men) comfortable displaying emotion and emotional support, and I don't want to suggest otherwise!

@ChateauErin It was while naming some craters as they passed the furthest that humans had been from earth. I thought I was watching it live, but when I looked back at the live broadcast, it had a "previously recorded" stamp on it, so I'm not sure. Many mixed feeling about sharing that man's personal pain, but it is a moment of true humanity. I hope it all gives some solace to Wiseman and his family

@flesh I hear what you are saying. I have argued in the past that it has been valuable for many people, and acknowledge that it has been an integral part of the preservation of many works. I still do not subscribe to the notion that it is necessary.

@flesh I'm not saying it's unreasonable, I'm just saying that I don't find it to be a necessity.
Not all works will be preserved, not all works can be preserved. There's something to mourn here for sure, but I am eager to not linger and make sure my attention/support goes toward helping independent people be sustainable and contribute to the likelihood that their works will be the ones that last (and lobby for things like the decommodification of intellectual property on the side)

@flesh I do not personally condemn piracy (though when I have resources, I generally feel that if I can't respect a creator's terms, I don't respect them enough to care what they have to say through their works)
IMO, piracy contributes to the social and cultural prominence of works. It's OK to not participate in further boosting Epic-owned stuff - there are so many other works out there by creative people who'd benefit from attention they're not receiving.

I don't have any insight into the decision making behind the project, but I can imagine a few things that might make it feel like his involvement increases the project's chances for success.
I feel it's worth noting that the original showrunner does not appear to be involved (not that it balances things out, but it's still interesting)

@ticho What has changed in the past quarter century? The political landscape in the US (which again, I struggle to divorce Firefly from as a product and artefact of US culture) and by extension a lot of other western cultures (including my own) has shifted right in a way that appears to have reignited that "lost cause" stuff, which IMO the whole make stuff great again narrative is borrowing heavily from.
I little while back, I saw a US confederate flag being flown here. Yikes.

@ticho I do make that distinction for sure, but since the context that we're talking about is the revisionist "lost cause" mythology that (among other things) works to sanitise the confederacy by downplaying the pro-slavery stance, that still leaves Mal embodying the romanticised "lost cause" confederate soldier, who is honour bound and has a heart of gold and actually had the moral high ground, etc.

@lritter @ticho Yes, that's what I was trying to get at, I think? Firefly didn't have time to explore much of it's themes/narrative conceits - we saw a fraction of a glimpse of what the show could have been, and I don't know/can't say where it could have gone.
Where two and a half decades ago, I thought "oh, that's some fascinating juxtaposition," today, I find it less impressive, there's an awkward blank spot that I don't have to squint hard to see the shape of stuff I'm not into.

@ticho @lritter Yeah, interesting. I see a lot more specific parallels and references to US cultural history I'm familiar with.
There are also interviews with the showrunner about Firefly, where he talks about wanting to capture the mentality of confederate veterans who had to cope with life after losing. I struggle to find an angle where Firefly doesn't have at least some "lost cause" romanticism in its text.

@ticho @lritter All readings are valid, but as another non-US person myself, I can't really wrap my head around the idea that US-produced cultural works don't have intrinsic ties to US cultural context... especially in this case where it's documented that the showrunner pitched it as a space western and intentionally drew on depictions of the US civil war (among other things).
I thought I'd tooted criticisms of Stargate SG1 from my first watch last year, but I guess I hadn't. I have many!

I have a complicated relationship with my enjoyment of Firefly. I have loved/continue to love the show, but I can also see that it has some elements that accepted uncritically and explored as little as they were in the show feel like problematic seeds - the pitch of "confederate solider who doesn't believe he lost the war leads a band of social outcasts under the radar of the status quo until it's time for them to step up and change the world" lands a little differently today than 24 years ago.

I had an upcoming election candidate call me to ask what I thought was important, and I pitched a national shutdown until our government takes action to openly condemn genocide and illegal war, and support those suffering these atrocities. Every time they tried to say that they wanted to focus on stuff closer to home, I reiterated that democracy is about participation and representation, and who we choose to be/how our nation acts is very much a local issue, a state issue, and a national issue.

Just finished reading Ann Druyan's Cosmos: Possible Worlds, a sequel to Carl Sagan's 1980 book Cosmos, and a companion piece to the 2020 TV series. The original Cosmos was very impactful for a young Cheese. Sagan's voice of and for humanity instilled love and wonder for the universe and all that has existed and will exist within.
Ann carries that same voice forward, giving a spotlight to additional stories of our species' growth and understanding, and respect for the steps we took along the way

@cmccullough I wish I had answers. I hopped on the Waterfox life raft in the meantime, but I want to be on something that is entirely decoupled from a Mozilla upstream and I refuse to use something that has a Google upstream.
Past experiences of how values and decision making shapes a project make me wary of Ladybird (edit: if I've been too subtle, there are examples and discussion in the replies), and I don't know when a browser using Servo might work with my bank's website, etc.

I received a fancy package from #Huion and @dff, celebrating my #SFD2005 comic/mascot. After some initial confusion about how config app maps pen input I was able to get it up and running on my Fedora desktop using official drivers without any hassle.
Compared to my old Cintiq, it's so small and light. I'm still wrapping my head around how to fit the mind boggling number of pixels into my desktop layout, but I am looking forward to getting some painting done when I have time!

Here's some WIP stuff I made along the way. I used @krita (for the final painting), @Blender (for blocking out the comic panels), and @inkscape (for a monotone vector version) at various points - it was fun to pull together a bunch of my favourite art tools together in one project!

Make an original piece of art using #FOSS tools to create a mascot for #SoftwareFreedomDay. There are some Huion drawing tablets up for grabs, and the submission deadline has been extended to November 9th.

I'd wanted to make and photograph the kite in real life (I've still got that vinyl banner in a box along with SFD t-shirts, tablecloths, signs, and other bits and bobs), but alas it's been a hectic month and a scribbly painting is all I could really manage.
Still, it's been very nice to reflect on and celebrate all this stuff.
