It’s not about story logic, it’s about story meaning and impact. It’s about promising a fanbase (middling) compensation for canceling a series with “look here’s a movie, you can have your characters back” and then *killing* one of them to make it clear “that was it, you won’t get more” as if we didn’t already know that.
Putting it in the timeline where he’s not dead *yet* won’t make me forget. I’d be *more* likely to watch if they wholly disavowed the movie, Wash was just not killed, so off we go.
