@Geri@mastodon.online That The Orange Baby can be trusted to use a our facilities in one way and not another anyway... And I was listening to the LBC US correspondent speaking about UK non-involvement in various US Wars and the one he forgot was the Vietnam War which Wilson refused to join in with... The UK has a long and honourable tradition prior to Blair (Iraq not Afghanistan) of not getting involved in US Wars unless WE thought it was a good and just thing to do. And now our servicemen and our bases are under attack! https://youtu.be/FFiXiwbRorM

@ReggieHere@mastodon.social @georgemonbiot.bsky.social " ...the Westminster parties would do well to implement PR just to stay in contention..." The problem is that, the only folk wanting PR are the ones that aren't expecting to win under FPTP. So Labour, under Blair's predecessors, were moving towards PR. then when elected....lost interest. Labour before the last election ... again talking about it but.... The only folk ever to put a version to the public was the minority government of the ConDems ... only because the Dems saw it as their one chance and pushed for it as a condition of going into government... and sold out their University fee promises as part of that deal (Of course many didn't see it as a good deal as it was only a Alternative Vote option) In fact as a London voter that has seen Mayoral elections returning a Left candidate because of a similar system but now faced with an election under a FPTP because the Tories decided they were never again going to win... Well

@thanetric@mastodonapp.uk I have often in the past removed the key altogether, using shift for typing and sometime if i actually wanted CapLock for some small use case pushing the exposed pad underneath with a pencil / pen etc and then again after I'm finished. It's THE most ridiculous key ever. (certainly for most people ,ost of the time.

@georgemonbiot.bsky.social What's good for me is that the Labour Party can see a massive load of voters to their left; and NOT just as the Far Right Media keep suggesting ex-Labour or discontented Labour voters moving to Reform ... Hopefully they will get rid of Starmer and move back to their roots too. Better yet seeing the massive left leaning vote, decide that they need to pass voting change (as they promised) so we can see left governments elected Even if not a single party.

@Tattooed_Mummy@beige.party "It's amazing to think that over half the people who are eligible to vote just haven't bothered." Indeed I was surprised and concerned about the numbers given that the average turnout in the UK is usually in the 60% s even around 70% (I still think that's low.... but normal sadly) Also by-Elections are usually marked by better turn outs But having checked it ... Wikipedia tells us that the turn out did drop from previous GE, but only from 48.01 to 47.6 percent

@MostlyHarmless@thecanadian.social Exactly why the rich push "The American Dream!" by which they imply to the workers that they should always think they might be the rich: so that they never want to tax the rich, because they might be those rich one day. Nor restrict their power for the same reason. Finally they tell them that they should be allowed guns... not so the workers can rise up.... but so they (the rich) can employ their own private army of armed "security"

Then before he appears onto the screen walks Leonard Nimoy LOL Anyone interested apparently they have a catch up https://talkingpicturestv.co.uk/tptv-encore-faqs/

@ahltorp@mastodon.nu @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk Interesting they say "It's no secret that iPhones live longer than Android phones." But quote no studies or such to support that statement Most iPhone users I know change their phones out every 2 years because their contract allows that (which they pay through the nose for) or if they own it sell it off for a good price second hand. Personally I brought my android handset in November 2022 and am not in the market for anything new so that's a statement I have no reason to believe I'm not sure that software support (bar security) worries most people at "the low end segment of the market" and I note the security updates on the OnePlus 13 are 6 years rather than the 4 for others, and frankly that's what matters for most folk They blather on about "latest features" but it's a operating system... for most folk it's the apps that count and as long as they work (and quickly enough) ... well that’s good enough (What kills most phones? Updates that slow it down!)

@Reddog@syzito.xyz I think that's the issue ... Historically posh had Breakfast (probably later than than the poor) / Lunch* / Tea / Dinner (as a main meal) Supper maybe if they stayed up later Working poor had (Maybe a small breakfast) Dinner (as a main meal to keep them going in the middle of the day) Tea (maybe called that in imitation of the posh? in the evening) and if they could afford it Supper just before bed. * Lunch (or luncheon) was a small bit of sandwiches or such which along with "High Tea" taken to stave off hunger into the evening.

As a born and Bred Londoner I cannot say how annoying I find it that Londoner get lumped in with "The South" generally - that we are all rich sods out of touch with the "rest of the country" Here is a silly example - but also what is interesting is that the urban areas in the "north" are more likely to say dinner than tea... a complete reversal!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czx4y1l1nq4o "... been a scandal-hit politician or a relegated football manager or troubled CEO he would have been sacked, replaced and forgotten years ago." Indeed, but as was being asked on LBC yesterday: more importantly was there any "internal investigation" by "The Firm" ? (As the Royal Family like to call themselves) When all this blew up years ago, and they paid out millions while denying any wrong doing And if not, why not? Any scandal involving a company director or the like, would be thoroughly investigated before ANY money was paid out.

https://youtu.be/Yfw0QG2ALk4 I would disagree - i don't think there is a lot of pressure on Stupid Starmer to do anything Trump wants ... He is NOT a good Ally and I don't think anyone wants Starmer to allow Trump's bombers to set off from our soil - we've seen what happens to a popular Labour leader when he goes along willy-nilly with an American Egotistic President (And frankly Stupid Starmer doesn't have the political space to even contemplate it at the moment.

@Trikkitt@mastodon.social @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip cont: As to mobile phones it is true that it is cheaper in the first month or two that renting a handset with inclusive calls is cheaper, BUT if you keep the phone for a couple of years it'll be cheaper over the whole period so yes if you have no capital, and NEED a phone it is a means of entry However as with all such business models, ultimately the cost of the equipment + the cost of the calls + the cost of any repairs must be less than the rental or the company would be losing money So as with insurance there is a risk to the company if the equipment becomes faulty (a risk an outright purchaser takes on) but it is a low risk - and often is supplemented by insurance sold at the time for accidental damage Finally of course there is some benefit to the supplier in bulk purchase of both handsets and calls but generally in the long term even that benefit wains Also is you own the handset you can sell the phone (or TV / VCR historically) on upgrade 2nd hand

"Alerts from radars to detect stopped vehicles had not been working on the M4 between junctions 8/9 to 12 for five days before the crash, the court heard." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8r1k0d2nreo I'll say two things 1 while he is obviously a fault There is a great fault - that the Government tried to save money on widening road (or accepting that you can't build your way out of congestion something proved years ago) at the cost of safety 2 Restore the safe hard shoulders and remove "smart motorways" forever The problem in part is that once you start down the route of sometime you can and sometimes you can't the ape brain we have forgets and just believes it can all the time. This is the same for "Turn on Red" that you see in the US and some European counties that have a sometimes you can if there is a green arrow but you have to give way to pedestrians crossing (if they are! And the ape notices!)

"Thanks Matt for making me feel old, I remember Flying Saucers being a new sweet in the 60s,they are certainly nowhere near the oldest sweets you had, (even if they are made using Catholic Mass wafers filled with sherbet -ask Tom Scott) they were only invented in the 50s apparently (and only came here in the 60s)" And BTW I think Woolies invented pick and mix... @littlealex@infosec.exchange Absolutely the best news, then we can be independent of the US and Trump's "friendly" comments about being about to turn off the fighter's abilities if they choose. In spite of "defence pacts" or treaties we never know who will be our enemy in the next war... We fought alongside the yanks in 1917/18 then they left us high and dry in 1939/41. We looked at our "friends" through rose tinted glasses of the second half of the war BUT we must never forget they are our friends only as long as it suits them and currently they are NOT led by a friendly regimen who only make ANY friendly noises because of the inertia within their voters, (and will abandon us if they cannot rule us! So we need to be looking for folk with similar outlooks and beliefs and align ourselves there. That sadly is not the US, it is a European Culture of ex=imperialism, and social support not found in the US even in the best of times and not currently.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat@mas.to I disagree with the reason in the quote They don't vote against their interests because it would "hurt someone else" ie the rich, it's because they believe in the "American dream" that it will hurt them when they become the rich ... it's the same motivation as the National Lottery sales motto "It could be you" (even though it 99% plus won't be (unless you mean the fiver* you get occasionally to keep you coming back * or whatever it is these days - is it still a fiver I've no idea)

@SmudgeTheInsultCat@mas.to Have to say I've never paid for a ringtone - my first non-included ringtone I made myself from a sample and have used the same tones ever since - I ALWAYS know when it's my phone because it's unique (but it can get annoying though that's the text etc alert rather than the tone which TBH I rarely hear. It was particularly annoying when I got my most recent phone on'y to find that I had to install an app (or open an account with the manufaturer (https://mastodonapp.uk/@cockneylaurie/116062383538805509) in order to use MY MP3 ringtones and alerts!

@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip Isn't this just another example of a trend that started in the 70s with TVs Prior to that a majority of folk owned their TVs then Rentals grew, particularly with VCRs The argument I heard at the time from someone was that they could upgrade when a new feature came out The next big move I think was mobile phones - combining phone and included calls rental (at a time when you paid on your land line per call) Then cars came along - when I was a child no one rented cars - then with the growth of fleets of sales and service vehicles companies decided to rent their vehicles and that gradually spread into personal contracts. Today that's moved into a new area, often paying extra for renting a feature built into the car which otherwise you cannot access I bought a HP printer a couple of years ago only to come across a new idea - open an HP account in order to download their software and be able print! Luckily I don't use WinDoze so could avoid that - but it's the thin edge...!

As a person born before 1965 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_boomers) it is NOTHING more than an agist insult they way it is used to refer, not to anyone's interests, attitudes or prejudices but to dismiss them..., me Now to the meat of the argument - I couldn't care less what it's called (though technically not milk in any sense understood before 1990...at least by most folk) but I agree it's never really confused anyone and falls into the general modern protection of a theoretical consumer idiot. But just as we no longer call "non brewed condiment" vinegar and certain "chocolate" as such; it falls into the realm of reserving certain names for particular products We don't call all yellow spreads we put on toast "butter" (which now i think about it is similar i suppose) nor even all pasties not from Cornwall "Cornish pasties" or many other regional things I don't care what it's called but I also didn't ask anyone to call it anything.
