Isn't this just another example of a trend that started in the 70s with TVs
Prior to that a majority of folk owned their TVs then Rentals grew, particularly with VCRs
The argument I heard at the time from someone was that they could upgrade when a new feature came out
The next big move I think was mobile phones - combining phone and included calls rental (at a time when you paid on your land line per call)
Then cars came along - when I was a child no one rented cars - then with the growth of fleets of sales and service vehicles companies decided to rent their vehicles and that gradually spread into personal contracts.
Today that's moved into a new area, often paying extra for renting a feature built into the car which otherwise you cannot access
I bought a HP printer a couple of years ago only to come across a new idea - open an HP account in order to download their software and be able print!
Luckily I don't use WinDoze so could avoid that - but it's the thin edge...!
