I’m aware this has been the case outside the US for some time. I wonder if this was done to simplify localization, or at least reduce the number of parts.
Interesting change between the M4 and M5 generations of MacBook: Apple’s replaced some of the keyboard labels with glyphs alone: tab, caps lock, shift, delete, and return. Fn, Control, Option, Command, and esc all retain their labels.
Friends, Mac users, Mastodonians, lend me your ears: I come not to bury the Studio Display, but to praise it! https://sixcolors.com/post/2026/03/in-defense-of-the-new-studio-display/
I was getting really annoyed the other day that Numbers was no longer opening my most recently used spreadsheet every time I launched it. Then I noticed Safari also had stoped re-opening my last session windows.
At which point I suddenly remembered that this is a system-level setting. 🤦

Ste did the excellent design for my personal website, and he's not only a pleasure to work with, but goes above and beyond the call of duty! You'd be lucky to have him.

Are education institutions going to be lining up to buy pallets of MacBook Neos? Nope. But that's not Apple's strategy here—it's about selling to education consumers.
Twenty years ago today, I started my first paid job as a writer with this post on MacUser.com. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for two decades—I still remember where I was when I wrote my try-out pieces and sent them to @jsnell@zeppelin.flights! I shall now crumble into dust.

Oh and the ebook of my supernatural detective novel ALL SOULS LOST is currently just $4.99 at a variety of stores. It was a book of the year on The Verge!

If you’re at Boskone this weekend, you can come catch me on a variety of panels, talking about everything from magic to heists, and, of course, Star Wars. Here’s my full schedule. Come say hi or bring a book to sign!
PONIES is really good. Great ‘70s production value, fun Cold War espionage plot, excellent performances by Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson. Fun, and funny, but with legit thriller tension moments. Peacock better give it a second season.

I think this actually fixed that SMS message syncing issue for me. Might be black magic though.
I've run into this issue several times when trying to log into my Google account in third-party apps on macOS and on visionOS via what I believe is a webview: I have a passkey configured, and it says “login with passkey" but the system pop-up never spawns, so I can't log in. The only alternative is to jump through a bunch of authentication hoops which is really annoying.
Is it just me for whom non-iMessage text messages never sync states across my devices?! If I read—or even delete—a text, say an automated notification from a pharmacy or from my city, it still shows up as unread—or present—on all my other devices, so I have to do the same thing like four times.
