Retired speechwriter. Big fan of Peppermint Patty and wooden jigsaw puzzles.

Ex-Wall St, ex-NYT, ex-dotcom stuff.
Ex-New Yorker, now in Las Vegas

I've been around since the days of usenet (met my husband there, our kids are now in their 20s). Most of my public writing is under my own name on Quora, or elsewhere under someone else's byline.

Pete Hegseth said this. Out loud. And then put a transcript of what he said up on a site called war.gov

Traditional allies who care about long-standing internationally agreed upon rules of engagement are deemed to be wringing their hands and clutching their pearls

This is as clear a declaration of, "We are committed to committing war crimes and will continue to war crime and just try and stop us!" as I have ever heard

And I was alive during the Bush years

This is a very cool optical effect

Whichever dot you focus on looks purple while the others look blue

As someone whose eyes have been "settling" from cataract surgery followed by a superficial keratectomy in one eye, and has noticed my vision changing daily at various focal points, this is fascinating

Oh I know why! Because we live in the stupidest fucking timeline and the world is run by insecure men who know no language other than dominance and abuse

"The Pentagon says it’s ‘lethalitymaxxing’. Why has ‘incel’ slang crossed into the mainstream?

With the rise of influencer Clavicular and ‘looksmaxxers’, sexist language from niche memes has infiltrated official government accounts and NYT headlines"

Today is a day that makes it abundantly clear just how ruinous AI is

Anyone want to guess at the ratio of propaganda AI video coming out of the Middle East (from all parties) compared to actual footage?

Kash Patel’s Girlfriend Seeks Fame and Fortune

“Last May, Mr. Patel attended a secret national security conference at an exclusive resort outside London, and invited Ms. Wilkins to join him at a group dinner with King Charles III at Windsor Castle. The Royalty and Specialist Protection service balked at fetching her from the airport, so the F.B.I. scrambled tactical agents and an embassy vehicle, according to a person with knowledge of the plan.”

WTF? He admits he took ecstasy 36 yrs ago in Aus:

"Yanis Varoufakis, a former Greek finance minister, is far from being the first politician to admit to decades-old experimentation with illegal drugs. But the admission earned him a rare distinction, his political party said on Weds: He is being prosecuted.

Mr. Varoufakis, a famously outspoken left-wing economist, author and critic of Greece’s conservative government, was charged with “promoting and advertising drugs,”

Chamath Palihapitiya said this out loud today. To other people. On a podcast

Imagine *whispering* it to someone, never mind broadcasting it to the world. Not only are these people the absolute worst, they are the most lacking in self-awareness

“I was a megadonor to the Democrats … I couldn't get a phone call returned from the White House to save my life … The Trump administration is totally different. There's not a single person there you can't get on the phone and talk to.”

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I've always wondered how hungry someone needed to be before they discovered you could actually eat stinging nettles. (Ditto artichokes).

@mattblaze@federate.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I was in boarding school (age 16) the first time someone taught me to eat an artichoke. One of my most salient memories I feel like three thoughts most people have independently at some point are: 1. Who was the first person who worked out how to eat an artichoke? 2. When I take aspirin, how does it know which body part hurts so it knows where to "go"? 3. Hey, I figured out the neatest trick! I can predict when my light turns green by watching the cross-light turn yellow!

How much money is enough to be able to turn down these invitations? "Apple has spent over $2 billion with companies in Saudi Arabia over the past five years, and during a visit to the country in late 2024, Mr. Cook pledged to open Apple stores there by 2026. The company has faced some blowback for hosting a Saudi app that allows men to track the movement of their wives and daughters. In 2019, Mr. Cook said he would investigate the app, but it is still available today" https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/18/us/politics/trump-saudi-dinner-guests.html?unlocked_article_code=1.2U8.IDem.O3-YSGBFyirh&smid=url-share

First, since you're gluing together multiple images, you obviously don't want the subject moving between captures. Buildings (except during, say, earthquakes) are well suited to this as subjects, but

I even mentioned the three days I spent in Tonopah (about a three hour drive from Las Vegas) monitoring the counting of the absentee ballots because there apparently wasn't a democrat in Nye County willing to do it [And if you want to learn some of the nitty gritty details of how elections work—including how ballots from people in Witness Protection are handled!—this is a great way to get involved and educate yourself. But don't make my rookie mistake of staying at the Clown Motel]

This seems healthy and totes normal

Playing the state’s energy market has become more profitable than mining bitcoin

"On the hottest and coldest days, when demand for electricity peaks and the price soars, the bitcoin miners either sell power back to providers at a profit or stop mining for a fee, paid by ercot. Doing so has become more lucrative than mining itself. In August 2023 Riot collected $32m from curtailing mining and just $8.6m from selling bitcoin."

A friendly reminder: If someone whose content you normally like is currently live-tooting an event in which you have no interest, you can MUTE them just for an hour or six [This is also true during sportsball season and on election nights]
