Things Schools Never Taught You That Actually Matter
https://youtube.com/watch?v=9Bk6o3_Wp1o&si=-zmf7n_sKLPFws2H
I deal with some of these or had to deal with them. Once I ended up in the hospital after being awake for 3 days. In college I was always sleep deprived. I honestly don't remember much of what I learned. However, the way I got things done was by breaking them up.
One of the best classes I took was personal finance. Being able to fully understand money isn't going to happen to me. It did get being thoughtful about money to the forefront of my brain. I refused to take out a student loan because I didn't have the ability to set aside money to pay it back.
I always feel like I'm a fraud about something. A lot of frauds have done well in life. They just managed to find gullible people. I only need to know slightly more than someone else in order to make it in life. Eventually, I'll convince myself that this will work.

Unlocking the Secrets: The Terror (1963) Film Review by Dr. Steve Haberman
https://youtube.com/watch?v=YNPKpzxGsFk&si=tw2NvEcTvmxnshP6

You won't be able to hear the movie practically. It's best to watch this once familiar with the movie. I also suggest being familiar with Roger Corman movies already, especially the loosely based Poe movies. Poe is brought up a lot as well as Freudian concepts. A quick overlook should be enough to understand references.
This will mainly interest film buffs, film students, and b-movie fans. There are direct quotes that feature f-bombs. Otherwise the movie is spoken about respectfully. #bmovie #RogerCorman #TheTerror #commentary

#News #1983 #cabbagepatchkids I still have the ones I grew up with. My imagination was strong as a kid. A lot of my plushies were divided into families. One of my favorite CPK doll is a bald male doll. It was made smaller than usual dolls. Many of my plushies had back stories. This doll was named Jason. He lived with a gorilla family as an assistant parent. The family is run by a male gorilla named Hitty because he liked hitting his chest like King Kong. He was shunned for being allergic to bananas. (Later I realized this was how I was dealing with how I was getting treated for having food allergies.) He lived with me, but longed for a family. So he adopted various types of monkeys. Being a single father of monkeys was hard. Jason came to help out.

I'm a collector of B-movies. I've watched nearly all of Vincent Price's movies. One is called House of Wax. Right now I'm binge watching Fantasy Island. I'm on season (series in the UK) 6 where the show has long since switched to fantasies being done by magic. Many have been parodies. This episode I recognized right away. Oddly, this is one I've only seen a few times. There are things that are excluded that are probably too macabre for the intended audience. #bmovie #VincentPrice #fantasyisland

I used to watch this on Cartoon Network under the title Case Closed. It was the first time I heard Moonlight Sonata, a very haunting song. I recently started watching reruns of the original Fantasy Island. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0577791/ This episode has a lot of similarities to the Case Closed episode. It's been such a long time since I saw the cartoon, but little bits of the episode kept coming to mind watching this episode of Fantasy Island.
I really liked the show. I wish I was able to watch the whole series. If I'm lucky, I can find it streaming. #fantasyisland #detectiveconan #moonlightsonata

Both by Tears For Fears who followed a short lived philosophy in the 80s. If you have to follow the news in the US, both are quite appropriate. Although, it's a little more like "Don’t Start With Me, Bro" kind of deal.

If you want rock n roll history from someone knowledgeable and interviews the people themselves, I have to recommend Professor Of Rock on YouTube.

ROGER TAYLOR - STRANGE FRONTIER HD
https://youtube.com/watch?v=lw7l790UsPc&si=V66SyDYI_oZwRjxZ
This has been playing in my head a lot. I follow a lawyer on YouTube to try to understand the current politics. This was done during the Cold War. There was a real threat of war occupying the back of adult minds, but there was also a slight sense of denial of anything wrong. The small bits of the 80s I am old enough to remember were shopping, video games, weird sexism, GI Joe, Care Bears & similar cartoons, really bad movies, a few really great movies, and a couple of board games that imply girls like having sleepovers.
Roger Taylor is extremely fond of cars. There's a song about it. The beginning has divers examining a car wreck. Seriously, nobody would've survived it, and looking is pointless. It's based off the movie Rebel Without a Cause.
There are a lot of songs about the possibilities of upcoming war or a then current war. Some songs merely seem to allude to it, but no official confirmation has been given. I had to read a lot of dystopia books in high school. In college I was also a music student. Nobody could've guessed that the two would prepare me for the world. There's one other song that's in my head that ties into this. Despite the melancholy, it's helped me find peace with the loss of my grandparents who fought to prevent this kind of thing. Is This The World We Created by Queen was actually played at Live Aid to relieve mass famine, but I feel the lyrics can aptly apply to nowadays. #music #musichistory

The Dark Truth Behind Captain Planet: A Billionaire’s Weapon? #90scartoo...
https://youtube.com/shorts/firk-Olp-0M?si=PPWoxhj2sMsO_RPJ
The title is a misnomer. It's actually a pretty amazing truth. The show features 5 children from 5 different regions given a power over an element or the ability to speak to animals. It's given to them by "The Spirit of the Earth" to combat disaster either natural or man-made. When it gets too big of a job, they combine their powers to make Captain Planet. He's basically a giant undo button. The problem is fixed, the crime is addressed, and the viewer learns a lesson.
It's your basic standard cartoon format for teaching lessons from at least the 70s. I can't be sure when it started. It appeared in the original Superfriends cartoon of the 70s. The message was basically everyone is able to save the planet, even in small ways. The 3 main ways we can all be heroes is by reducing, reusing, and recycling.

I've now finished the 14th and final canon Oz book. This was mainly about diplomacy. There are numerous historical accounts as well as literary accounts to draw parallel from. There's one problem with history. Everyone has a different recollection and opinion of it. So as not to offend others, I will once again note parallels between Oz and Narnia. Both Narnia and Oz have a being tied to the beginning of time. Oz reveals this much later in the series. These beings are highly respected, knowledgeable, and just. The main antagonist is a magical unjust ruler. They both have a quiet group wanting to overthrow the ruler. War is found in both, but the consequences are very different. Once Oz became a fairy country there was no longer death. Battles are resolved with reformation and submission.
This can be viewed numerous ways. I'm guessing children are to view it as everyone becomes friends. I'm guessing older, and maybe cynical, readers would see this more as conquering and assimilation. Everyone gets what they need and wants within reason. It discusses why being given everything you want is not such a good thing. The only topic skirted is immortality. It's part of a topic that shapes how well people deal with loss.
This avoidance is probably for the best given a terrible war is being fought. It gives the families a chance to teach this instead. It's still decades out from Sesame Street and Mr Rogers Neighborhood approaching this. #oz #books #diplomacy

I've just finished The Magic of Oz. It's a satisfying story centered around a birthday party for Ozma. Her age and birth date are unknown, but it's an important anniversary to children especially.
There's something I noticed more in this book than in previous ones. The perils are less severe and easily lead to a happy ending. One such reason might be the age and health of the writer. I've found myself get more tired of people getting into scrapes and charged with making things better. My other guess is that he's written himself into a corner by restricting magic. By doing so, only in rural areas can magic be found. Now those people must surrender their magic. Only so much rural land can exist.
When these were written, WW1 was in effect. Today children are more exposed to everything thanks to television. Those children are less likely to understand the unhappy business and why adults are serious. This might be a way to provide relief and escape for these children. In the UK children were sent to live in boarding schools or with people living in rural areas for safety. This is why the children in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe were sent away.
If you read both series, you'll notice a difference in education and maturity. The Narnia books were written out of order. Use the order starting with The Magician's Nephew. It's where Narnia begins. Some publications number by date published, some by placement in the storyline. #oz #books

The Tin Woodsman of Oz has quite a surprise in the latter half. I surmise that it shows how vanity can be confused with other emotions. Love is one that most becoming of age movies dwell upon. Our first impressions of a person is their appearance or sound. We naturally gravitate to the attractive option. Something we learn from the tale of the Ugly Duckling. Later we might choose to get to know them. We might be surprised by their true nature. For some reason, there are those who stay with disagreeable people.
Long ago a man steadily became tin. It was shiny, could work without tiring, and he eventually gained her affection. She proudly owned the only tin person, which made her feel superior. Most of us would search for a missing person. It would be work, which she was not fond of. Another man gradually became tin. It was considered just the same as the other. Again he disappeared due to rusting beyond the home. You can't expect a lazy being to work! She gathered the pieces of the two men and had them combined except for a missing arm. A tin one is fastened upon the beast. Yay! She arguably has the best of all three! However, she has two different people in one body. It's more like Jekyll and Hyde with a tin arm. Now she's the most superior person in the land. (I have some chosen adjectives, but superior is not one of them.)
This tale barely features anyone other than four characters for very long. There are some interesting perils and a cute bunny. #books #oz #moral

I'm halfway through The Tin Woodsman of Oz. It's time for a soapbox. We've a boy who explores Oz, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodsman as the main characters and some secondary characters. Not all of Oz is known or peaceful. Our boy tells the Tin Man that his heart must not be kind if he abandoned his love. It starts them on the journey to find her. All is good until then.
The boy suggests that they avoid danger as much as possible. 🏆Good Idea Award👍 His companions disagree and tend to forget their goal of reuniting the Tin Man. So they ignore a warning sign, assume a house of a wicked giant is abandoned, and keep finding themselves in trouble. Now they are blaming our boy for giving them the idea in the first place. Here are my problems: 1. The boy in no way forced them to do this. 2. He warns them to not take unnecessary risks. Oz has plenty to offer that are unavoidable. 3. So far, he's been best at keeping focused. 4. He's not the vain one who insists upon going around the Emerald City out of pride.
Just because the boy is not magic, it doesn't mean he isn't wise. It's not his fault that people must eat and sleep. None of the folly comes from him.
I can commiserate with this kid. I'm often considered foolish. Yet nobody else has had to face my trials. I cruely learned to advertise my struggles as little as possible, that no matter what, my problems are less than theirs, and to take their abuse and smile. That's what I see happening to our boy. #oz #books #opinion

I finished The Lost Princess of Oz. This came from a suggestion from a reader. Somehow all of the magic and Princess Ozma has left Oz. According to one character, the most devastating theft is her cooking pan. One thing to keep in mind is that anything beyond the Deadly Desert is not under Ozma's rule. They are just as important because they are also magic. Dorothy has become more like a ruler of Oz. The reader and the characters become more familiar with the more distant territories. Most of these places have no idea they were part of a larger country. Each city has its own unique inhabitants. #Oz #books

I'm down to the last 4 canon Oz books. I'm still not used to some of the cultural differences. At least in the US, we don't kiss friends. This is especially true in certain areas where even family rarely hug or kiss each other. However, this does seem to be commonplace in depictions of royalty and high society. Even some Nancy Drew books had friends kiss. Some of the language is outdated. Even the standard dictionary didn't have the words. I grew up with strict grammar. My skills have waned some since college. So, the poor grammar used by someone in high school really bugs me. Sometimes Dorothy behaves like a young child. It makes me wonder what typical behavior was like in the 1920s. What I enjoy the most is the messages from the author. He really appreciates his readers, and he loves receiving their messages. #Oz #language #mannerisms
