I’m making a custom clay body for my upcoming workshop using #WildClay I collected just south of where I live, and combining it with a midrange commercial clay to give it the durability it lacks on its own. The sample on the right was fired to over 2100°F, just under its melting point, and is still fragile and easily broken. The color transformation is lovely, though. I’m excited to give workshop participants a unique opportunity to work with local clay.

I’ve had a humbling week in the studio. After 13 years of #WheelThrowing, I sat down at my wheel on Monday and couldn’t manage to successfully complete a single form. There’s typically a large gap between throwing cycles for me because my decorating process is long, so by the time I get back around to throwing, I’m out of practice. I took it as an opportunity to return to the basics and seek advanced wheel throwing tips. Each day has been better than the last. #pottery

I’m feeling increased motivation to use my creativity to continue to connect with like-minded Floridians who love our state in spite of its obvious flaws. The best way to do this locally has been to volunteer with groups that oppose our government’s cruelty and build alternative spaces of care for vulnerable communities. It takes a special kind of conviction to carry on this work in such an unsupportive and hostile context.

I’m making terra sigillata from the clay I collected from my birthplace last summer. I’ve been invited to a show called “Clay as Place: The Transient Object” and it reminds me that my #WildClay collection is a mirror of my experience with transience—moving, touring and visiting. But when I went and collected that clay from the duck pond in Virginia, I could be certain that it’s the same earth that was there when I was four years old, throwing the birds stale bread.

Happy New Year! Today is also Imani (Faith), the last day of #Kwanzaa which we have been celebrating as a community since the day after Christmas. We gathered and ate food from the African diaspora: jollof rice, jerk chicken, etc. I also made the unity cup for the Kwanzaa table this year decorated with black, red and green foraged clays. It’s easy to identify what we’re against but celebrating the principles of Kwanzaa reminds us what we need more of in 2026 and beyond. #BlackFedi

I finally got around to processing several #WildClay samples I'd collected over the last half of the year. I really love having this very tangible way to reflect on the places I've been. I've made some predictions of what results I might get from my test tiles, but mostly, I'm prepared to be surprised--which is what makes it a fun and inspiring way to work.
