Wondering why there are so few validators at some Sydney tram stops. Would make more sense to have lots of them along the platform if you want people to touch on & off quickly. Can't imagine it'd be that expensive to add more.

I met this highly interesting bloke on the train overnight, he was the random person in the bunk above mine. In his 80s, he's an environmental campaigner and was a historian and journalist; his Wikipedia entry is fascinating. And in between chatting with me he was on his laptop working on some environmental campaign. Very impressive. You do meet some memorable people on trains.

Have just arrived in that Sydney, once again via the XPT sleeper train. And once again it was very late, 2hr 15 min this time. Have to give them points for originality though, I've heard all the reasons but this was a new one: apparently something in the front power engine failed so the train couldn't signal to drivers at level crossings, and thus they had to go very verrrrry slow. Interesting read about a Melbourne icon. I had wondered what caused the split into two Brunetti-branded businesses.

'Brunetti represents Australian-Italian culture made real in the form of coffee and cake. To interstate visitors, these spaces simply say “Melbourne”. Most of us probably think of Brunetti’s two 1000-square-metre temples to indulgence as one entity with twin campuses.

'But that hasn’t been true since 2021. Both brothers refer to the event that divided them as “the separation”. Since then, there have been two distinct businesses – Brunetti Classico in Carlton, and Brunetti Oro in the city.'
