Thought I had our 3 week #trekking trip to the Central Pyrenees in June all sketched out. Then I came across "Le Chemin de Liberté" (Freedom trail) that escapees and evaders used in WW2 to escape south over the mountains from France into Spain. I read up on some of the fascinating stories involved. Le Chemin de la Liberte is one hardest of many escape routes. This particular route is about 60km with 3500m ascent/descent. Must say, I'm very tempted. #backpacking #spain #hiking

An internal Pentagon document leaked on April 24, 2026, reveals that the United States considered punishing NATO allies for refusing to support the American military campaign against Iran. Among the options: suspending Spain's NATO membership and reviewing US support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. NATO responded immediately. The Secretary General stated that the Washington Treaty contains no provision for expelling members. Allies can leave voluntarily but cannot be removed by another member's decision, even by the United States. Spain has been a NATO member since 1982. The British reaction was restrained but firm. Downing Street stated that the Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory and this is not a matter for any negotiation, regardless of the state of transatlantic relations. A Falklands veteran told the BBC that the news made him feel his sacrifice was made in vain. The leak is not an impulsive move. It reflects a systematic effort to transform NATO from a collective security alliance into a transactional structure where support is exchanged for concessions. The alliance has functioned for 77 years on the principle that an attack on one is an attack on all. Article 5 never obligated members to join offensive operations initiated by another member. This matters for Ukraine and the EU. If US support for allies is conditional and transactional, strategic calculations must account for this. Berlin and Paris are already discussing independent European nuclear deterrence. Baltic states have faced delays in American weapons shipments redirected to the Persian Gulf. The question is not whether Spain will be suspended. One of Spain's most famous bullfighters, José Antonio Morante de la Puebla, left Seville's April fair with a perforated rectum. undefined | Indonesia extradites Scottish man sought by Spain as crime boss Indonesia extradited a 45‑year‑old Scottish national, Steven Lyons, to Spain on Wednesday after his removal had been delayed several times while police continued an ongoing investigation. Lyons, described by law‑enforcement as a senior figure in an international crime syndicate, was flown from Bali to Amsterdam and is to be transferred onward to Spain to face charges of drug trafficking and money‑laundering, officials said. Lyons was arrested on 28 March at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali after arriving from Singapore, when Indonesia’s immigration system flagged him through an Interpol Red Notice issued at Spain’s request. He is alleged to be the leader of the “Lyons crime family” and has been on Spain’s wanted list for about two years following a 2024 killing there. Authorities say his transnational network, operating out of Scotland, controlled narcotics routes between Spain and the United Kingdom and laundered proceeds through shell companies across Europe and the Middle East, including in Spain, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey. Prior to his arrest, coordinated raids in Scotland and Spain led to multiple detentions, and additional suspects were seized in Turkey, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates. Lyons arrived in Bali with two companions who remain on the island, although he claimed to have travelled alone. Media reports note that Lyons survived a 2006 shooting in Glasgow that killed his cousin, later moved to Spain and settled in Dubai, and that his brother and an associate were killed in a suspected gang‑land attack at a beachfront bar in Fuengirola, southern Spain, last year.
