#RachelCorrie died 23 years ago today, on 16 March 2003. She was crushed by an #Israeli army bulldozer, when trying to prevent the demolition of a house in #Rafah, #Gaza, owned by a #Palestinian doctor and his family. Rachel was 23-years-old. See http://rachelcorriefoundation.org

#WilliamHague is odd. At 16, he was an awkward right-winger at the #ConservativeParty conference. He was similarly gawky as a by-election winner in 1988 and by the time he retired as Tory leader aged 40, he was still often #cringetastic.

A decade later, Hague re-emerged as elder statesman-like Foreign Sec to young #DavidCameron. He had been reborn as a perma-60yo establishment stereotype.

Sadly, #CamillaTominey's interview sheds no light on who he really is.

Why is #CliveLewis?

The #LabourParty MP for Norwich South is a good critic of #neoliberalism, and of public alienation from politics. He is right that proportional representation could open up politics, tho like most English critics of #FPTP he seems unaware of the importance of #STV.

But all he seems to do about it is 3 or 4 articles per year in #TheGuardian and a few TV appearances.

Radical change requires sustained hard work to build movements. Clive isn't that.

England loves #legalFictions.

The last legal #execution in #England was in 1964. #CapitalPunishment for murder was abolished in 1969.

But killings of convicted people continue at ~ 4/year. No hangman, just other prisoners.

The recipe is simple. Concentrate vulnerable or despised prisoners in underfunded and under-supervised small spaces with no privacy and no hope. Heat and stir, to watch 300 deaths per year.

#IanHuntley is just the latest, killed far more brutally than by #execution.

The data is probably right, but its far too late for Labour to save itself. Two years of rightwing horrors can't be undone in two months.

Wonderful news for anyone being investigated by #London's #MetropolitanPolice!

It turns out that the #MetPol's definition of #flightRisk does not include being unemployed, v v rich, and extraordinarily well-connected to the world's wealthiest and most politically powerful people. Not even when the offence suspected carries up to a 25 year sentence.

Obviously it is mere coincidence that the suspect employs fabulously expensive lawyers.

Keir #Starmer remains the Green Party's greatest asset. His record unpopularity has repelled even voters who have been loyal to the #LabourParty for decades.

The more Starmer stays and fights, the more the Greens are boosted.

But of course it's not Starmer's choice. Most of his party want him gone, but they can't agree on a candidate who is actually available.

So he may remain for months, or even years, while his party bleeds out. The Greens are very lucky.

Yes, Starmer deserves to be toast. His leadership was fractally fooked long ago, and is founded on ststenatic mendacity by a man with no political values and no political skills.

But party leaders fall only when their own MPs turn on them. And while most Labour MPs have no faith in Starmer, they can't agree on an eligible replacement.

So Starmer is safe for now. Unloved, but safe.

The UK has made detailed plans to spend £46 million on a national memorial to the mother of an alleged #rapist.

The late Lizzie Windsor is believed to have funded most of the £12 million reportedly paid by her son Andy to settle a lawsuit by a woman who alleged that he raped her.

In the UK, rape cover up doesn't rule out a national memorial in #London.

"A man is now helping police with their enquiries".

In the old days, English cops used this phrase to describe a man they had nicked. It conveyed plod being straight-faced and solemn-voiced while the suspect was knocked about by teams of plod trained to leave no bruises. The change in terminology was triggered by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1974, aka #PACE.

But if was still the old days, I can't imagine any shortage of cops ready to "encourage" the Norfolk man to "help" the plod.

The death of Rev #JesseJackson deprives #USA of its last great #CivilRights leader. The great tradition lives on, but without a figurehead.

Rep. John Lewis said in 1988 that Jackson’s 2 runs for presidency “opened some doors that some minority person will be able to walk through and become president”.

Sadly, the man who walked through was #BarackObama. Jackson wept with joy at the election, but #Obama was a vain peacock, not a leader. The movement was hijacked, the opening squandered.

#ICE's occupation of #Minneapolis is opposed by most Americans. But the #OvertonWindow is narrow. Debate is framed largely around ICE, rather than as #imperialBlowback from overseas wars and the militarised racism within the USA. The left press explores the big picture, and the #NYT carried an oped by David Wallace-Wells https://archive.is/UGNfs . But MSM reporting and Democrats continue to frame ICE as #Trump's overreach, rather than as normal American repression now visiting suburbs.
