Also a trivial implementation using environment variables as a #define

I do think we should all adopt age range constants of the form PRE_EPSTEIN, YOUNG_EPSTEIN, OLDER_EPSTEIN, and LEGAL however and enshrine it forever in the APIs

@cliffle@hachyderm.io @b0rk@social.jvns.ca A bit of advice I was given long ago when someone proposes doing something apparently dumb and which has been tried before is never to say "that doesn't work" or "we've tried" but to always say "This is what we couldn't figure out last time" They now know where you came unstuck and can see if they have answers, they know what to think about if they've not got that far, and you've not stopped them if they actually do have the answer.

PR1MEOS was mostly written in early style FORTRAN and I don't think BLISS should be mentioned in polite company. Pascal has some interesting limits but then so did early C, Just PASCAL tended towards "you can't easily do that" and C tended towards "thats dumb, but if you aim at your feet and pray go for it"

@cstross@wandering.shop @mirrorwitch@awful.systems I wouldn't credit their EUV readiness so much. A tech demo if it even works is not a production line. However the US depends upon EU companies to produce EUV equipment and they in part depend upon Chinese stuff who in turn depend upon Australian rare earth mining. So we can all have nice things or none of us can. I also question whether China cares what the US thinks about Taiwan at all. It's simply a risk/return calculation on dead young Chinese people - a scarce resource

@mattblaze@federate.social I'm fond of the phosgene gas argument to all of this personally. Phosgene is a hideous chemical weapon that ideally nobody should know how to make in their back yard. It's also what you get if you weld metal that you cleaned with brake cleaning fluid and didn't then clean the brake cleaning fluid off. So you have a choice, you can either kill lots of welders, or you can teach welders how to make phosgene gas. Obscurity is just externalising costs and risks.

It lets them crash the dollar and it helps their Russian pals. It doesn't really matter if the US people staplegun the entire political establishment and judiciary to trees the damage is done and with the resulting crash of oil and the unsustainability of US industry and food production it's going to be a very long road to rebuilding. On the bright side they might actually meet some CO2 reduction targets.
