@mcc @miss_rodent ...it is said that Fedi software is "billionaire proof". Considering how ATmosphere works it seems like the idea is to *preserve* billionaires, or at least the idea of a capitalist "marketplace" where regular participants cannot "own" the core operations but instead are "consumers" that merely have choice between a small number of big "service providers" and can only realky own and control their PDS.
They certainly made some Choices, especially considering how poorly the architecture fits with how the internet inherently works.

All the relays need to consume and replicate the same firehouse of data
All the PDSes must accept "pull requests" from all the relays (I don't know enough about ATProto to know how the relays "register" with PDSes
All the appviews and labelers need to interact with all the relays and clients
...and so on. The ATmosphere is really kinda effed up, like they took Fediverse and put it through a pivot table to turn everything sideways. Each fedi instance implements the whole stack of serviced to manage just what is relevant to itself. ATmosphere is a composition composed of all these services that each must manage everything, everywhere, all at once, but with an open protocol.
So, the vision of atmosphere is instead of picking a "home server" you pick a "set of services"...

@DJDarren this isn't a "lately" thing in my experience, it is a "still" thing. It seems to me virtually any small business that didn't have an online presence before about 10 years ago still doesn't have a true internet presence at all today, unless they are a deliberately online-first operation.
They have no website; they have a Facebook and/or Instagram page
They have no public email, they say "messagee on Facebook"
I have even seen a couple operations that, in addition to the above, *have no public phone number*. They literally funnel ALL customer communication through Meta and if you are lucky you eventually get the personal mobile number of an employee!
If you are the above then you are not on the internet; you aren't even really online. You are just On Meta.
This sort of non-presence on the internet used to be perceived by potential customers as potentially dodgy, like they are either too new and small to have a track record or they are fly by night scammers. Now not so much, but it's still bad.

@avilewis the UCP government has been pushing their own "Alberta is Calling" programme to entice Canadians from other provinces for years now, resulting in an influx of realatively wealthy people from the most expensive housing markets in Canada which undoubtedly had a lot to do with pushing up housing costs in Alberta.
At one point she was bragging about how we could quickly reach a population of 10 million people.
But it's the *federal Liberals* and their "out of control immigration" that are the cause of all our ills :blobrollingeyes:
To anyone paying attention Smith clearly doesn't have a problem with rapid population growth, she has a problem with the "wrong kind" of people coming here. She is entirely too cozy with Parker and Rath, two miserable, unscrupulous bigots who undoubtedly have a lot to do with our government's toxic politics.

@kytta Google Maps, for navigation purposes, is now probably the worst in the industry. Everything Google does is done poorly TBH.
In the case of Google Maps it seems bow to be a mishmash of OSM and other Free/open sources of data (municipality maps etc) and AI/ML scanned satellite imagery. At various points I have seen creekbeds and the ridges along cliffs/bluffs identified as trails and roads, probably because of the latter. And, yeah, Google doesn't care.
Google cares about nothing really...except shareholder returns, maybe, but probably barely.
