New preprint! Global inequality is on the rise, and so is global catastrophic risk. These two problems are not independent: inequality drives societal instability and increases catastrophic risk. We show this by drawing on historical and empirical research highlighting the corrosive effects of inequality. The danger comes via two pathways: 1) inequality erodes trust and information sharing, making collective action much harder; 2) inequality is especially damaging to democracies, which are our best bet for surviving future hazards. This means, if we want a society more resilient to global catastrophic risk, we need more democratic participation and less inequality. See the paper for the full argument: https://eartharxiv.org/repository/view/12164/ #inequality #wealth #GlobalCatastrophicRisk #History

"British governments have made choices that mean poorer children get old sooner and die earlier than richer children. The fact our healthy lives are now getting shorter is also a political choice. Much of the choosing was done by George Osborne and David Cameron, by Nick Clegg and Danny Alexander, who imposed year after year of spending cuts." "This is a life and death story for the UK – so why is it being brushed under the carpet?" #UKpol #health #inequality https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/mar/06/uk-death-healthy-life-expectancy-decline-state?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

The rich alway see one rule for them & another rule for the rest of us. Monaco-based migrant Jim Ratcliffe complains about immigrants in the UK, while himself being an immigrant in Monaco. But that's different because he's rich & entitled, and the migrants in Britain are just normal folk trying to survive & thus merely a problem to be resolved. Of course, its just the usual hypocrisy of the wealthy amplified by the complicit media. #migration #politics #inequality

As Robert Shrimsley (FT) suggests the corruption wrought on politics by money is becoming ever more serious.... not least of all, because with heightened inequality there are some very rich people who are happy to corrupt democracy to serve their own needs. As I have said before: the only really dangerous minority are the rich! #politics #inequality

The World Inequality Report 2026 makes for pretty grim reading, identifying as it does the range of massive inequalities that pattern the world.... on one level it won't tell you much you don't already suspect but is full of data for you to chew over. In the end, the usual issues about the ultra-rich & tax, the role of gender disparities and the impact of (and on) climate change remain in the foreground, whatever the other (interesting) detail! #inequality #politics https://wir2026.wid.world
