If you're looking for an alternative to #VSCode for reasonably straight-forward workflows, you might find #Kate a capable option. It even looks an behaves a lot like vscode these days.
It features highlighting and completion and built-in git - which personally I like more than vscode.
It also has a built-in terminal.
It's not as polished, and there are no 3rd party extensions, but if you don't need a lot of bells and whistles and prefer #free and #opensource software - or you detest #microsoft - it might work for ya!

I've been building out a lil oldschool, hand-rolled website for my band #Slugmilk, and it's turned into a behemoth 180 page authoritative discography and videography.
There's a wiki-style page for each album and video, with all the info we can remember - though we're still all collectively writing our rememberances, as we continue to release a ton of new videos and albums!

I just got my band set up on a #selfhosted #Matrix / #Element. This is controversial for a number of reasons - but I'm comfortable doing the grunt work to make it happen in a way I can live with.
For my non-techie friends coming over, it's close enough and they picked it right up. Our needs are basic and are covered.
I realise this will not fit everyone's needs, and it's a sprawling project choked with #enshittification at the moment, but if you can sift down through it all, you might find something that works. (Not very encouraging - I know. I'm sorry - it's a little dire out there.)
Another alternative that I run is #xmpp. It's less like discord than most Matrix clients, but it's fast and light - time tested and has e2ee.
There is also #NextCloud Talk. I don't use it much, but it works as well as xmpp or matrix in my experience.

If I had money I would just add one of everything they make to my cart. I'm glad they're still developing and finding a bit of a market for it!
It's incredible how compact a complex small show can be these days.
A lot of the shows we have in these days fly in with a carryon-sized rack with their mixer, wireless mics and in-ear monitors. A carryon case fits the mics and precabled stage looms.
That's all well and good when you have $50,000 to toss down. Imagine being able to build a whole rig for your show out of this kind of stuff for what, a few hundred?

Wow, spot on - except the touchscreen bit. I've been working on essentially the rest off and on over the last few years. I'm still not sold on an ADC/DAC chain yet, but have a general board for a usb-c audio interface & control surface. Still have to do PSU.
I already have a small controller working to drive and read a handful of flying faders I have kicking around.
I don't have any hands on working on FGPAs, but that's the next area I'll be setting up to learn and tinker with.

I'd really love to see an #OpenHardware, #OpenSoftware matrix mixer & DSP processor.
Likewise for modern PA systems, in order for them to be any use, you must rely on a proprietary matrix mixer and DSP processor to process and route the signals from the mixers to the loudspeakers.
While I think this is largely "fine", it would be great to have something for smaller venues and operators who are running older and maybe cobbled together systems. Ditto for up-and-coming speaker system designers.

Rad, thanks for the heads up on the multichannel card from them them - I bought a stereo card for my dad's birthday a few years ago, to upgrade a little pirate internet radio station I run for him. It works an absolute treat. Though now that I think about it there was a lot of confusion with the docs about setting vs versions, and it was a bunch of trial & error to get working with my setup, but flawless after.
Indeed the pro audio world has largely moved away from the simple multichannel analogue signals. Most are running various flavours of #AES, or #MADI or #Dante or others. The DSP side is a whole other beast, and admittedly outside my scope of expertise.

The mixers I use, as well as our lighting console are all based on windows embedded. One of them is based on XP!
At least they are very difficult to accidentally expose to the internet.
