🚈🇮🇪 KeolisAmey has been awarded the next generation Luas Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract, valued at €1.3bn, by #Transport Infrastructure #Ireland (TII) and the National Transport Authority (NTA). Starting 1 September 2026, the contract runs for seven years with an extension option. The contract includes a new timetable with extra services during peak times from 2027. Transdev will help transition to KeolisAmey, with most staff expected to transfer under transfer regulations. KeolisAmey operates similar services such as London’s Docklands Light #Railway and #Manchester #Metrolink. This contract supports the continued expansion of Dublin’s Luas network, including the planned extension to Finglas. Today I went for a ride to Ashton Canal Park between the canal of the same name and the River Medlock after it emerges from under the City Stadium on the former site of Bradford Colliery in East Manchester to see if the wild fritillaries there were flowering yet. They were, and I got the bonus of an orange fungus and harvesting wild garlic. Unfortunately, the park is marred by fly-tipping. 🚈🐝 #Transport for Greater #Manchester (TfGM) will carry out a major £150m programme this year to enhance the capacity, reliability and resilience of the #tram network across Greater Manchester. Work will include track, tram and workforce upgrades, with some temporary disruption for passengers at locations including Trafford Bar, Deansgate-Castlefield, Monsall, Newton Heath & Moston, Eccles, Derker and Piccadilly Gardens. Preparatory works start over the Easter Weekend, with full closures on the Altrincham, Eccles and Trafford Park lines. The Irk goes under train and tram lines near Scotland in central Manchester, where a Jacobite army is thought to have massed, thus the name. I have seen kingfishers very near here! #riverirk #manchester

How many people know that #WordPress was co-founded by a black man, Mike Little? Or that he's from the north of England? A self-taught coder from #Stockport, just south of #Manchester? Or that he never received so much as a share, cent or job offer from the $7bn+ valued Automattic after spending five months working exclusively with Matt Mullenweg on the B2 fork? After @bevangelist@social.coop told me about @mikelittle@mastodon.online I interviewed him for a documentary I never got round to making. Back then I was left with two certainties: he's Wozniak to Mullenweg's Jobs. Among other things he added the one-click upgrade that's been central to WP's bonkers 45%-of-the-web-success. And he's one of the nicest people I've ever interviewed, which is also bonkers given that he not only didn't share in WP's financial success, but that he's barely known. Manchester unspun: How a city got high on music by Andy Spinoza An illuminating read. Enjoyed the early chapters about the post-punk and Factory days more than the later ones. I cannot share Spinoza's apparent enthusiasm for the proliferation of tower blocks in the city I live in, although I do not have a rosy-tinted view of the past either.
