🚄⚽️ Stevenage FC and its Academy have formally adopted #Stevenage #railway station in partnership with Thameslink and Great Northern. A plaque was unveiled on platform 5 by MP Kevin Bonavia ahead of the Boro’s 2-1 win over Stockport on 28 February. Under-12s handed out artwork and safety posters they designed, and will help plant flowers in the club colours. Thameslink and Great Northern have supported the Academy for 12 years, providing free travel for players and collaborating on community campaigns. The initiative aims to deepen the club’s engagement with the local community, with a job swap seeing a young player record a station announcement while the rail company’s announcer attended the match, playfully adapting the “See It. Say It. Sorted.” message. https://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/govia-thameslink-railway/pressreleases/see-it-score-it-sorted-stevenage-fc-adopt-station-in-partnership-with-thameslink-and-great-northern-3434880

This morning at Clapham Junction, South Western #Railway (SWR) surprised passengers with a ballet performance by students from the Royal Academy of Dance. The dancers performed ‘Extended Lines’ aboard an Arterio train, celebrating the fleet’s rollout to all 96 stations on SWR’s suburban network. The five Senior Scholars, aged 15–16, moved through pliés, penchés and jetés, showcasing their artistry while highlighting the train’s larger, more comfortable carriages with Wi-Fi and charging points. SWR now runs 35 Arterios across more than 400 daily services, linking #London #Waterloo to destinations including #Dorking, #Guildford, and #Windsor. https://www.southwesternrailway.com/other/news-and-media/news/2026/february/ballet-training

Greater Anglia has hosted nine Cub Scouts from Ipswich at its training academy in #Stratford, giving them the chance to use its high-tech train driving simulators. The visit was arranged with the East #Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership and included Cubs from the 9th and 31st #Ipswich Scout Groups. Driver Trainer Mark Robson introduced the group to train operations before supervising sessions in the full-size simulator cabs, which replicate real routes, weather conditions and hazards across the Greater Anglia network. Each Scout practised basic driving skills in a range of scenarios. Staff said the visit aimed to inspire interest in the #railway, while Scout leaders described the day as enjoyable and rewarding for the group. https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/about-us/news-desk/news-articles/greater-anglia-invites-ipswich-based-scouts-training-academy

A farewell rail tour celebrating 50-year-old Mark III trains has raised £20,000 for charity. #Chiltern #Railways and the Branch Line Society organised the sold-out journey on 22 February between #London Marylebone and the West Midlands, marking the impending withdrawal of the operator’s Mark III fleet at the end of March. Around 250 enthusiasts travelled on the special service, with many more gathering at stations along the route. Some visitors were invited into the driver’s cab at Banbury before departure. Proceeds from the tour were donated to #Railway Children, which supports vulnerable young people in the #UK, Tanzania and India. The Mark III coaches, in service with Chiltern since 2010, are being replaced by the operator’s new Mark 5A ‘Chiltern Explorer’ #trains. https://press.chilternrailways.co.uk/news/farewell-tour-for-50-year-old-trains-raises-gbp-20-000-for-charity

Great Western #Railway has launched a new campaign celebrating the myths and legends of the South West and #Wales, featuring the Famous Five on a quest to find a dragon reportedly seen flying across the region. The 60-second film, directed by Oscar and BAFTA winner Peter Baynton, follows the group as they travel from #Cardiff to #Penzance, with landmarks including Cardiff Castle featured. Inspired by GWR’s 1920s tourism posters, the campaign revisits regional folklore to encourage leisure travel. It runs across cinema, television, radio, outdoor and digital platforms until 5 April. The Famous Five ‘Adventures Start Here’ campaign began in 2017 and recently won APG’s Long Term Thinking award. https://news.gwr.com/news/famous-five-chase-dragon-across-the-south-west-and-wales-in-new-gwr-campaign

#London Northwestern #Railway (LNR) has been named ‘Train Operator of the Year’ at the 2026 Rail Business Awards. The accolade follows a £1bn investment in new trains and infrastructure by LNR and sister brand West Midlands Railway (WMR), which has increased service capacity by 40% and improved journeys for over a million passengers weekly. LNR has introduced Class 730/2 electric trains on West Coast Main Line routes from London Euston, boosting customer satisfaction by 20%. Significant depot upgrades, including an £80m Bletchley facility, support the new fleet. Passenger numbers rose 12% year-on-year, with LNR and WMR carrying 67.7 million in 2024/25. https://www.londonnorthwesternrailway.co.uk/about-us/news-desk/london-northwestern-railway-named-%E2%80%98train-operator-year%E2%80%99-national-awards

Great Western #Railway has won two top honours at the Rail #Business Awards, recognising innovation and safety. The operator took Innovation of the Year for a record 200.5-mile battery train journey – the longest on a single charge – independently validated by the Railway Performance Society. Trials on the #Greenford branch line also showed fast-charging technology costing 60% less than conventional electrification, supporting lower-carbon regional services. GWR also won Safety & Security Excellence for its Resilient Futures: Bridgwater Safeguarding Response, which cut youth antisocial behaviour by 77%. Working with more than 20 partners, including British Transport Police and Railway Children, the scheme focused on safeguarding, staff training and community initiatives. GWR was highly commended for #accessibility improvements. https://news.gwr.com/news/great-western-railway-scoops-top-awards-at-industry-leading-rail-business-awards

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #ScotRail is to introduce a £10 minimum fare for passengers who deliberately board without buying a ticket, in a move to curb fare evasion estimated to cost Scotland’s #Railway more than £11 million a year. The charge, which will often exceed the standard fare for short trips, will apply after an education period from April to July 2026. There is no extra fee where the ticket price is above £10, but passengers must still buy before travel to access discounts. Exemptions include closed or absent ticket offices and machines, national entitlement card holders, #disabled customers unable to use ticket machines, and those paying cash who obtain a promise to pay. Since returning to public ownership in 2022, ScotRail says ticketless #travel has fallen from 8.8 to 3.7 per cent, with revenue protection generating around £2 million annually. https://www.scotrail.co.uk/about-scotrail/news/scotrail-tackle-ticketless-travel-new-minimum-fare

£50m has been brought forward to accelerate #transport schemes linked to major regeneration projects in the West Midlands. West Midlands Combined Authority and Mayor Richard Parker approved the funding to advance design, surveys and business cases for extending the Metro to the Sports Quarter in east Birmingham, including a tram line to the planned Birmingham City stadium. Upgrades to Witton railway station and Aston #railway station will support expansion at Villa Park and preparations for UEFA Euro 2028. Funding will also progress Coventry’s Very Light Rail scheme. The £50m is an advance on £2.4bn of government transport funding due from 2027 to 2032, covering road, rail, tram, bus and active #travel projects across the region, alongside further investment in road maintenance. https://www.wmca.org.uk/news/50m-funding-brought-forward-to-fast-track-mayor-s-plans-for-transport/

c2c #Railway has marked one year of contactless travel, with passengers making three million journeys since its February 2025 launch. The system allows travel across the c2c network, London, and the wider pay-as-you-go area using a single card or device. Basildon, Laindon, and Leigh-on-Sea were the top-performing Essex stations. c2c, now publicly owned, is the only national operator offering a fully contactless network. Officials praised the scheme for convenience, environmental benefits, and supporting the Government’s wider rail modernisation plans. https://www.c2c-online.co.uk/media-centre/latest-news/three-million-taps-achieved-in-year-one-of-contactless/

The #Railway 200 ‘Inspiration’ Train has returned to the Greater Anglia network, offering a travelling exhibition marking 200 years of the modern railway. After successful visits to Norwich and Lowestoft last summer, and welcoming more than 1,500 visitors at Cambridge in late January, the train will next call at Colchester (3–4 February 2026) and Clacton-on-Sea (5–6 February 2026). Dates at Hertford East are sold out. A small number of free tickets remain for Colchester and Clacton and must be booked in advance. Part of the national Railway 200 programme, the exhibition explores rail’s past, present and future, with interactive zones covering historic milestones, careers and engineering. Open to all ages, visits run from 10am to 5pm, with no passengers carried between sites. https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/about-us/news-desk/news-articles/special-railway-200-inspiration-train-returns-greater-anglia

Great Western #Railway (GWR) has introduced the UK’s first battery-only passenger train into service, with the Class 230 entering operation on the #Greenford branch line on Saturday 31 January. The train replaced a diesel unit on the 05:30 service from West Ealing following 22 months of trials of fast-charge technology. Last year it set a world record by travelling 200.5 miles on a single charge. GWR said the trial shows battery trains can provide a reliable alternative where electrification is not feasible, supporting plans to replace ageing diesel fleets. Network Rail said the project marks an important step towards lower-emission rail #travel. The train will initially run on Saturdays as further performance data is gathered. https://news.gwr.com/news/great-western-railway-introduces-record-breaking-battery-train-into-passenger-service-1
