It was a slow month for next generation Covid vaccine results reporting, but a big month for clinical trial news:

  • A new clinical trial for intranasal and inhaled versions of a vax is on the starting blocks in the US;

  • Another intranasal vax trial has expanded to another 2 cities in the US; and

  • A trial for a “variant-proof” vax going into phase 2a trial in Germany.

Plus some preclinical reports & more in my latest monthly update @PLOS@mstdn.science

"About a quarter of people worldwide say they believe that raw milk is healthier than pasteurized milk, that use of acetaminophen during pregnancy causes autism, and that vaccines are used for population control. These are a few of the harmful health claims that were surveyed in the 5th annual Edelman Trust Barometer Special Report: Trust and Health." https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/public-health/new-global-health-misinformation-survey-reveals-deep-divides #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #misinformation #milk #acetaminophen #autism #pregnancy #vaccines #physicians

RE: https://mstdn.ca/@ducky/116477984538960887 Useful info for people in BC who aren't anti-vaxxers: If you are not in one of the groups explicitly called out, you are still allowed to get a shot (as long as it has been at least three months since your previous shot). And they are, sensibly, still free for walk-ins. #BC #BritishColumbia #BCPoli #vaccines #vaccination

A "staggering" number of people believe unproven claims about vaccines, raw milk and more, according to a survey of 16,000 people across 16 countries conducted by the Edelman Trust Institute in New York. Here's more from Nature. https://flip.it/xUFk0X #Science #Health #Vaccines #Misinformation

"State officials have reported 28 more measles cases in the last two weeks, bringing the statewide total to at least 175 infections so far this year. The vast majority of cases are in a federal detention facility in Hudspeth County, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services, which released the latest figures on Thursday." https://www.texastribune.org/2026/04/02/texas-measles-hudspeth-el-paso-federal-detention-immigration/ #PublicHealth #measles #vaccines #immunizations #immigration #ICE #detention #texas

News-packed update on nextgen Covid vaccines this month at my @PLOS@mstdn.science blog:

  • Phase 2 results for a self-amplifying mRNA vaccine from Japan with a phase 3 trial recently closed off

  • Preclinical results for an intranasal “universal” vaccine that provided some protection from coronaviruses, H1N1 flu, some bacterial infections, and an asthma allergen

  • Opportunities to participate in intranasal vaccine trials in Finland and the US

And much more: https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2026/03/01/progress-for-universal-vaccine-more-nextgen-covid-vax-news-update-no-38/

Vaccination is a subject close to my heart as I have a suppressed immune system and worry about being infected by others which has happened to me with Covid. I live a somewhat sheltered life as a result. While respecting personal choice, I do wonder if anti-vaxxers also decline all medicines as being “unsafe”? Quid Pro Quo? #vaccines

Interesting article about an interesting approach, but the pedant in me thinks that this is not a #vaccine in sense that we have understood #vaccines so far? https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aea1260

In the UK, 249 individuals received compensation for harm caused by #COVID19 #vaccines. Given that more than 50 million people were vaccinated, this reflects about 0.0005% of the population and appears not to be an unrealistic number. #vaccination #vaccine https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yrvyv4zlzo

At least 20 students at Ave Maria University in Florida now have confirmed measles infections. Florida has the fourth most measles cases so far in 2026, with 21 confirmed. South Carolina has by far the most (540, 920 if you count those still sick from 2025), followed by Utah (48) and Arizona (34), with those three states experiencing ongoing outbreaks that began in 2025. At least 19 people have been hospitalized in S. Carolina during the current outbreak, with an untold number of patients suffering from measles-related encephalitis 95% are unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccine status https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/measles/campus-measles-outbreak-grows-florida #measles #vaccines #antivax #rfkjr #publichealth

I feel like folks who have common sense just need to state obvious truths like: Vaccines save lives. and put that message (and other similar) on repeat. Like - did you know: Vaccines save lives. Because, I thought this was obvious, but obviously a lot of people have.. forgotten? Didn't think about it enough? Because: Vaccines save lives. Would it work? Would some idiots out there go, huh, maybe Vaccines save lives. #health #WHO #world #vaccines
