Behind every journey on #Supertram in South #Yorkshire is the work of the Presentation Team, which maintains trams, stops, shelters and #infrastructure to keep the network safe and welcoming. Alongside routine duties, the team carries out periodic deep cleans. Recently, a Siemens tram underwent a two-day programme in the workshop, beginning with a detailed inspection and structured plan to avoid service disruption. Specialist equipment, including new chewing gum removal machinery, was used to tackle hard-to-reach areas. Overhead panels and signage were removed and cleaned, seat bases dismantled, stair edging resealed, and floors, cab and exterior thoroughly treated. The project brought together engineering and facilities staff, with Managing Director Sean English joining the work. It forms part of an ongoing programme to maintain standards across the 30-year-old fleet ahead of new trams expected in 2030, subject to funding, alongside wider stop refurbishments. https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-gb/news/supertram-presentation-team

In Richmond, North Yorkshire, legend claims a secret tunnel runs between the town's castle and a ruined abbey in the nearby hamlet of Easby. It's said that soldiers one day discovered a mysterious tunnel in the castle dungeons and - due to its narrow dimensions - decided to send a young drummer boy along it while they followed his beats from above. About half-a-mile outside town, however, his drumming ceased and he was never seen again. Folklore states that on dark quiet nights, you can still hear his drumming beneath Richmond's marketplace. Similar legends are found elsewhere. In Edinburgh, a tunnel beneath the Royal Mile was explored by a young piper who met a similar fate and the faint sounds of his bagpipes can also be heard in the wee hours. #Folklore #FolkloreThursday #BookologyThursday #history #mythology #Yorkshire #ghosts #paranormal #gothic #weird

The Go-Ahead Group has launched a national “Better By Bus” campaign to encourage more people to travel by bus, highlighting benefits for customers, communities and the environment. Running for 12 months across #England, from the Isle of Wight to #Yorkshire, the campaign uses radio, digital audio, billboards and on-bus branding. It aims to grow the 11 million daily bus users by promoting affordability, #accessibility, and lower environmental impact. Key benefits include fares under £3 on participating routes, fewer cars on the road, and support for local businesses, as passengers spend on average £32 per return journey locally. Go-Ahead says the campaign will help people see buses as a practical, greener alternative to car travel, while Roads and #Buses Minister Simon Lightwood notes government investment makes now an ideal time to choose bus travel. 🚌 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 https://www.go-ahead.com/news/go-ahead-launches-national-better-by-bus-campaign/

A wide-angle photo of the pipe chamber at Ossett Town Hall. At the right of the picture are the chimes. The special effects "toy cabinet" is above me, the xylophone and vibraphone to the left, lots of other things. I didn't have time to get a pic of those so someone else could have a look. (Yes I'm an organ nerd. Don't judge me.) #organ #theatre #yorkshire

When wondering how best to describe the settlement of Thwaite in North Yorkshire, I went for 'hamlet', but then discovered it is described by some as a 'village'. So that got me thinking, what is the difference? One helpful definition I came across describes a 'hamlet' as a tiny, rural settlement without a church or central services, typically smaller than a village which is likely to have a church, school and maybe shops. A hamlet is more likely to be little more than a cluster of dwellings, but a 'village' will generally be more developed. I think that puts Thwaite in the 'hamlet' category. Situated near Muker in Swaledale, alongside Thwaite Beck, it was, from 1974, part of the district of Richmondshire, but since 2023 falls under the unitary North Yorkshire Council. Popular with walkers, two long-distant paths run through it, the Pennine Way and Wainwright's Coast to Coast. #england #yorkshire #swaledale #pennines #pennineway #landscape #photography
