The allotment a week ago, turning slowly greener now and with some colour from tulips, pasque flowers, cowslips and fruit trees. The nights are still cold so growth is still slow. Come mid-May and everything will explode 🙂 #allotment #garden

I love wild tulips and have planted quite a selection of different ones. Most like a well-drained sunny spot in relatively poor soil. They are normally reliably perennial and the first start flowering at the end of February, the latest in May. Here you can see some of my wild tulips (Tulipa tarda, Tulipa linifolia, Tulipa clusiana, Tulipa saxatilis) in flower at the moment. #flowers #tulips

@Broadfork Yes that`s true, The allotment is still looking quite bare at the moment, there is lots growing but not the abundance of summer. Normally from mid-May onwards, once the risk of frost stops and the nights are warmer, everything explodes 🙂

A very well-disguised crab spider (Misumena vatia) lurking in a tulip flower on my allotment. This crab spider can alter the colour of its body to match it`s surroundings. Any small pollinator landing on the flower will get a nasty surprise! #spiders #flowers

A photo from the allotment in July a few years ago. Cannot wait for the allotment to look this colourful again this year. I have planted some more Clematis this year as there are hardly any slugs (thanks to the drought last year), they normally ate all the shoots of young clematis plants and it was difficult to establish them. #allotment #gardening #flowers

@Irisfreundin No problem. You are right, it is important to plant the right apple varieties which flower at a similar time if you plant just 2 or 3 trees. Also, triploid trees such as Blenheim Orange, cannot pollinate other apples. So a third apple is needed.

I have added some height to the allotment with many arches and climbing structures. This arch at the back of the allotment is planted with two apple trees, one is the variety Sunrise, the other Blenheim Orange. Sunrise is an early apple and has just started flowering. It is a nice entrance to the allotment, eventually the trees will be self-supporting. They do produce a good crop of apples in late summer and autumn. #allotment #gardening

I seem to accidentally have created a new Tulip variety. The parent variety, which I planted years ago, can be seen in the background and has large red flowers with yellow at the edges. The new variety in the foreground, which I did not plant and which flowers for the first time, has smaller flowers, flowers later than the parent, and has pretty red and yellow but much more stripy flowers. I wonder how it happened, maybe some genetic mutation. #flowers #tulips

We do have muntjac deer as well which occasionally nibble on the bark of my trees which is annoying so I have put chicken wire around some of the stems which has stopped them.

@MostlyTato Thank you :-) I do have 3 smaller ponds which I created on a much smaller budget. One is just a large container I was given for free which I buried in the ground and added some pond plants. It is home to several frogs. Great you have some newts this year. You don`t need a large pond to attract wildlife 🙂

@carrottom It is really just 3 allotments plus the wildflower area at the allotment entrance. In total 625sqm plus 100sqm for the wildflower area. So not much more what you have. It really is a matter of staying on top of it at all times, I am there most weekends and often 1h in the morning before work. But it is really not so much work as I dont grow many vegetables anymore. I mostly grow fruit, perennial veg and lots of flowers. Weeds dont grow much anymore and I cut back on watering.

@connynasch Thank you. The pond has a butyl liner and I used lot`s of stones to disguise the liner to make it look more natural. Attached is a photo of how it looked like in 2018, just after I finished building it. I had ducks visiting once too but they ate a lot of my pond plants so I was not happy. The frogs have moved to the frog pond which is smaller and warmer. Nice about the snake, I had a grass snake one year, I bet it ate some of the frogs!

@the_wub For me this is my garden space as I don`t have a garden at home. That is why it does not look like a traditional allotment. I love growing plants and attract wildlife. Luckily we have very relaxed allotment rules, as long as the plot is cultivated people can grow what they want, flowers, fruit and/or vegetables. Not allowed are too many weeds and large trees which is fair enough.

Hedgehogs, foxes and many birds use it for drinking and bathing. I have also planted many fruit trees such as pear trees, plums, apples, apricots and a large peach tree. And it is full of flowers in summer 🙂 #allotment #gardening

@connynasch Not all tulips are perennial but many are, especially if they are growing in well-drained soil in a warm, sunny position. Most tulips I planted on my allotment come back every year. Best tulips for naturalising seem to be the Darwin hybrids, Ballerina tulips, Viridiflora tulips, Kaufmannia and Fosteriana tulips. Also most of the wild tulips come back every year.

@TheDonsieLass I would not use puddled clay, it sounds great, no plastic, no oil used, but it is very hard to get right. And the pond needs to be topped up with water at all times as when the clay dries out at the edges it can crack and the pond will lose water. For your first pond it is safest and easiest to just use either a butyl or PVC liner. Butyl liner lasts a lifetime if done properly so if you are worried about plastic it is the better option.

@TheDonsieLass It depends what budget you have. If you want to spend a bit of money and want something good that lasts a life-time (40+ years) I would go for a butyl pond liner, even better is Firestone rubber pond liner which is what I used for my big pond. The small frog pond in the picture just has a plastic (PVC) liner which is cheap and lasts about 25 years.

@MostlyTato @levampyre I do the same, lots of plants in the pond, marginals, water plants and floaters, help with reducing algae growth. I only have a brief spell of algae growth in spring, but later the water clears again on its own once the pond plants are growing properly.

@levampyre It is a plastic liner I used underneath, it was on offer so I bought it. For the larger pond I have a much more expensive butyl liner, but the plastic liner will do the job for a smaller pond.

@Broadfork Slow worms would be nice to have but have not seen any yet on my allotment, nice you have them on your plot. Had grass snake visiting one year, probably because of the frogs which was nice. Great you have newts in your pond, always nice to see when all the wildlife arrives in a new pond. Yes my ponds are all different, 2 ponds are very small but are used by frogs and birds, the frog pond is sunny and warm, the larger newt pond is more shady, much deeper and stays cooler in summer.

A drone fly (looks like Eristalis pertinax) is enjoying the sunshine on a wild tulip flower. Drone flies (part of the big group of hoverflies) have aquatic larvae called rat-tailed maggots which like water with high organic load and low oxygen, they can be attracted by leaving vegetation to rot in a bucket of water. #insects

I had to change how I garden as with climate change my original plantings did not work as well anymore. I planted a lot more woody plants with deep roots such as fruit trees, fruit bushes and canes. They provide shade and don`t need watering. I also planted perennial veg such as rhubarb and perennial kale as well as many perennial flowers for wildlife. This means less watering, more shelter, and leaves for mulching. I also have more birds now. #climatechange #gardening

@Broadfork Thank you :-) I only had one marsh marigold plant to begin with which has self-seeded so much I was able to spread the plants over the 4 ponds I have now. Yes frogs are nice, they are more conspicuous than newts and fun to watch and I also often find them outside the pond under leaves or in the vegetables beds.

@MostlyTato Thank you :-) I enjoy this too. I started with a very small pond, then built the large one with the newts, than another very small one and the last pond was the frog pond, so 4 in total. Building ponds is so rewarding as the wildlife will flock to them nearly immediately after they are finished 🙂

I have built the frog pond a few years ago as the tadpoles always got eaten by the many newts in the larger deeper pond. The frog pond is more shallow, in full sunshine and warms up more quickly in spring, the frogs love it and the tadpoles have a greater chance of survival. #frogs #wildlife #allotment

I am managing a little strip of land at the entrance to my allotment site as a wildflower area, to attract wildlife and to have something nice to look at for people who come to the allotment site. It looks like this (left picture) at the moment but will burst into flower in June (right, picture from last year) and will look very colourful then. #wildflowers

Bee-flies (Bombylius major) were out and about on my allotment at the weekend. They parasitise solitary mining bees as they lay their eggs in the bee nests, the fly larva then eats the pollen store intended for the bee larva, followed by the bee larva itself. Bee-flies don’t have a negative impact on solitary bee populations, a healthy bee-fly population indicates a healthy solitary mining bee population, it is all part of a healthy ecosystem. #pollinators #spring

A table display of some little trees in pots 🙂. I love trees and have already planted lots, mainly fruit trees, on the allotment. But as you can grow nearly any tree in a pot with the right technique, I also have a nice little collection of these, mainly trees which would get too big in the ground. #trees #bonsai

I accidentally created a nice nesting place for solitary bees on the allotment. I piled up all the weeds I dug out 2 years ago and let them rot down for a year. I planted this 'hill' last year with drought-tolerant plants, it has a nice south-facing slope which warms up quickly. I now have discovered quite a number of solitary bees swarming there, all males at the moment, but the females will come out soon too 🙂 #pollinators #bees

Nice sunny morning on the allotment, with the newt pond and some early fruit blossom. I like this time of year as everything is coming awake again, flowers opening, buds swelling, leaves unfurling. But still not as much to do and more time to enjoy everything compared to when spring starts properly which is always a mad rush. #allotment #gardening #spring
