AI is creating a new barrier for those of us obsessed with structure and perfect punctuation.

To prove I'm human, I now have to intentionally lower my standards. I've used em dashes (—) my whole life (yes, using Alt+0151), but now I use simple dashes to avoid being ignored or flagged as a bot.

It's a strange irony: my natural meticulousness is mistaken for a machine, while being "human" is now equated with sloppiness.

It's so exhausting pretending to be a normal person every single day, only to be asked: "what are you so stressed about?" When you're literally just surviving day to day, hearing questions like that is physically painful, because it's impossible to answer them, and honestly, nobody really gives a damn about the answer anyway. So vibe coding is the new industry standard for 2026. Developers are letting AI agents spit out thousands of lines of code, prioritizing deployment speed over structural soundness. Shoutout to Proton support - they helped me reset my Drive volume entirely.

The difference between RSA2048 and Curve25519 (ECC) on mobile is night and day. Loading is now instant, and the "thermal throttling" is gone.

Moral of the story: Modern crypto isn't just about security, it's about accessibility and efficiency.

Now my data is encrypted by my own key, and the system actually feels "functional" for the first time.

My 70k+ media library was a mess. A full backup took 2 weeks. My iPhone would literally start overheating just trying to decrypt the feed in the browser or app.

I realized my brain wasn't the only thing "overheating" due to inefficient protocols. The RSA2048 encryption was a massive overhead for mobile hardware.

BUT. You can't just "convert" an existing Proton Drive volume to a new key. You’re stuck with the old slow one for existing files.

Following up on my GPG journey: I decided to replace all my default Proton keys with my own.

Found a fascinating bottleneck. I could delete most random keys, but two old RSA2048 ones were "immortal." Turns out, they were hard-linked to my Proton Calendar and Drive from the day I created the account.

This explained a lot about my 70k+ photo library performance issues.

Spent the last week diving deep into E2EE and encryption. Decided to do it right: generated a fresh GPG key on my own hardware using Vanity GPG.

Managed to "mine" 10 trailing zeros for the fingerprint in just 5 minutes on the M4 Max—the performance is wild.

Chose ECC (Curve25519/Ed25519) for that perfect balance of speed and high security. Moved the private key to my YubiKey, and now signing GitHub/GitLab commits is just a single tap away.

My brain loves manual protocols, and there’s something deeply satisfying about hardware-backed trust. I know, I'm late to the party, but it feels good to finally have that "Verified" badge.

I found out about my neurodivergence only a year ago. A massive reality check.

I'm realizing I have almost zero social skills - just manual protocols.
Email is my asynchronous heaven.
Pure data, no pressure.

But 1-1/group meetings... Sensory torture. Calculating facial expressions and body language feels like a manual social engineering project that drains my "inner battery".
While others "sync up", my brain overloads just to look functional.

This is why Mastodon is my safe space - I can be myself here. I'm like at home here.

@jonw@cosocial.ca True, giving the master password is 99% of the win. But I worry about that last 1% - the "manual" for non-tech family members.

For them, entering a vault with 500+ entries can be just as overwhelming as the locked vault itself.

A guide like eol-dr helps them find the "red thread" (bank, email, NAS) without getting lost in the fluff. Plus, handling 2FA or physical keys (I own 2 YubiKeys) is still a tricky bottleneck if they don't know the workflow.

While planning my NAS build, I had a sobering realization. My "Bus Factor" at home is exactly 1.

I'm going to spend so much time securing my data against drive failures and hackers but what about my family? If something happens to me, my homelab becomes a digital tomb that no one has the keys to.

I dug up this repo I bookmarked a while ago: eol-dr (End of Life / Disaster Recovery). It’s basically a framework for documenting your digital life for your loved ones.

Configuring a RAID array is easy. Writing a "How to access our photos when I'm gone" guide is the hard part. Probably, the hardest. But it's arguably the most important backup you'll ever make.
