@eldersea @alice Just be careful, last I checked, rule 1 for certain types of house fairies is "You can't talk about your house fairies". Particularly if they're brownies.

@fratermus Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't yet bought my van (I know the verb tenses in the post rather muddied where I actually sit on my timeline), but most of my gear exists due to me being a semi-avid hammock camper. I've spent loads of nights at primitive campgrounds, albeit within a few steps of my car, but otherwise without power. So I'd have most of this blanket-based insulation (minus the merino wool) regardless. My initial premise of writing the post (which never really got mentioned in the post itself beyond the opening lines), was to determine if I'm keeping all of my existing blankets or if I'm getting rid of any. And the verdict currently looks like I'm keeping all of them, including the Cozy Critter (despite its negligible R-value).

About half an hour left and I'm not expecting much change at this point, so here's the followup. (If something does drastically change, I'll edit this post, but with 364 respondents, I'd have to be trending 3 days after the initial post.) 1430 total button clicks over 10 choices from 364 accounts. NSFW leads with 86% or approximately 313 selections. Second goes to Violence and Gore at 85% and 309 selections. Third to Spoilers and Punchlines at 74% and 269 selections. Fourth is Politics with a mere 50%. Fifth is Health, including Mental Health with 39%. Though I know from the comments, some of the folks who selected "other" mentioned things that I would consider fall into the Health category. The "Long Posts" option performed fairly poorly, with a mere 23%, but I expect that can likely be attributed by the number of instances that have low character limits on their posts and force their users to write threads of posts (or take it offsite) when they want to be verbose. Eye contact came in seventh with a mere 17%, followed by Food at 12%. I did receive one comment from a vegan who considered non-vegan food to count under the "Violence and Gore". Below that came Other and Nothing with 6% and 4% respectfully. Most folks who responded in regards to asymmetry were those who tended to CW their own content as a kindness to their community beyond what they themselves wish to see CWed, including a couple of folks who chose to go into their settings and disable hidden posts altogether (on Mastodon desktop, it's Preferences > Appearance > scroll down to Sensitive Media > Always expand posts marked with content warnings). And the folks who provided comments for "other" listed: smoking paraphernalia, politics adjacent content, LLM content, religious stuff, certain media (like Harry Potter), audio, flashing images, phobias and creepy crawlies, drugs and addictions, and fedi meta. One person weighed with a commendable "err on the side of caution" which I read as "better to CW too much than not enough" (which is very much how I feel about the whole matter). And I got one from someone who feels the opposite and doesn't CW anything at all. #PocketsPolls

@purplepadma I personally have my preferences set so that all images start as black blocks (I don't even go for the color blob thing), and brace myself for the worst if I stumble across a post that is just an image and no context to indicate the subject matter. But I know a lot of people don't like doing that. Thanks for weighing in.

I always forget about the meta meme, mostly because I try not to participate. Thanks for the reminder.

Personally, I'd lump all the addiction-related stuff in with the health and mental health category, but I can certainly understand the justification for giving it its own bullet point.

@mdione In my experience with the wide world of people I interact with, it's mostly US-based folks who act like the US is the center of the world and assume everybody else lives there until proven otherwise. If someone doesn't specify where they are in the world and are making regular posts about "the state of the world", good odds they're in the US. I suppose I shouldn't complain too loudly though, as I'm (regretfully) living in their midst.

Content Warnings for what?

This poll assumes types of content that you put Content Warnings on are the same types of content that you want to see others put Content Warnings on. If it's not symmetrical for you, I'd like to know why.

So apparently it's a "simple" weighted average to calculate the resulting temperature when mixing two volumes of liquid, and the formula doesn't care whether you're using metric or imperial or scientific units (as long as you're consistent).

1 US cup of 50F water + 1 US cup of 200F water = 2 US cups of 125F water

1 dL of 10C water + 1 dL of 100C water = 2 dL of 55C water

3 parts 373K water + 1 part 273K water = 4 parts 348K water
(That's K as in Kelvin.)

(Well, minus whatever you'll lose to the surrounding atmosphere.)

Handy thing to keep in mind if you're trying to brew a hot beverage at a certain temperature, but you don't have one of those newfangled temp-adjustable kettles.

@Taco_lad It is in dev mode, but the sensors are not disabled. (It's probably a moot point whether it's better to say "not disabled" or "enabled", but the button is literally labelled "Sensors Off" and the button is off, aka "sensors off is off", hence "not disabled".) Generally the only thing I touch in the dev options is visible taps, though it's certainly possible that I accidentally touched something else. However, I don't believe I visited the dev settings during the time that the camera stopped working. Furthermore, if I enable the Sensors Off button (aka disable the sensors), I don't regain flashlight functionality. Nonetheless, it's more advice than I had before, and none of the help docs or troubleshooting pages recommended checking dev mode (which I almost always enable on my devices), so thanks for the thought!

I revived my OnePlus 6 (Android 11/Oxygen 11.1.2.2/A6003) a few months ago with a new battery. But suddenly in the past few days, (1) the camera has stopped working and (2) the flashlight is disabled because it claims the camera is currently in use.

When I launch the camera app, there's no in-app buttons visible. I can see the back/home/app-drawer buttons at the bottom and the dropdown/clock/notification bar at the top. But otherwise, the screen is black and blank.

I'm trying to determine if there are any troubleshooting steps I can do *that I haven't already done* before I resort to a Factory Reset. And if a Factory Reset is even worth it at this point.

I have:
- removed camera permissions from all other apps on the phone
- briefly removed camera permissions from the camera app itself (I put them back afterward)
- verified there are no apparent physical damages to the exterior of the camera hardware (without opening the device up--I'm not certain I'd be able to spot hardware damage to the internal boards)
- cleared the data and cache of the camera app
- force-stopped the camera app
- checked for updates (there are none, last update was November 2021)
- ensured there are no third-party camera apps on my phone
- tried operating the camera in Safe Mode (there was no change to the behavior)
- wiped the cache partition in Recovery Mode

Despite all those changes, both the camera app and the flashlight functionality remain inoperable.
Even with *everything* denied access to camera permissions (even the camera app itself) the flashlight still denied access with the excuse of the camera being in use.

I'm trying to avoid sinking money into a new device, so I'm also concerned about the value of taking it to a service center.
I do have a last resort backup phone with a somewhat working camera (but it's a really bad camera, such that I can't use it for the reasons I switched back to the OnePlus 6).

I have a working work-around for the flashlight (a solid white image and turning the screen brightness all the way up) so that's just an inconvenience.
But not having a working camera is a problem for several reasons (using it as an MFA device being one, using it for personal banking as another).

So, Fedi, am I missing any troubleshooting steps?
Do you think it's worth trying a Factory Reset?
Should I pop the back again (I'd rather not, but if it'll help) and send y'all a pic of that?
Or am I just boned and need to get a new device?

@moss That's my whole "expectations vs hopes" thing. I stopped setting expectations, especially for other people. I have hopes and that's it. If expectations go unfulfilled, that leads to disappointment. If hopes go unfulfilled... it's no stress.

@mmm Without seeing it first-hand, I can't tell you, but I'd be real surprised if it weren't there somewhere. Might be a quirk of your instance versioning or something funny going on in your build. In Sharkey and Misskey, I've seen it labeled "Account Data" instead of "Import and export" but that's the only two wordings I've seen. I'd recommend pinging your admin with the question, and maybe @FediTips too for good measure. If you figure it out, please let us know so we don't end up with another DenverCoder9, if you know what I mean. @mayintoronto

@mayintoronto@beige.party
On Mastodon:
1. Settings
2. Import & Export
3. Download everything that there's an option to download.
Other interfaces will be slightly different, but are likely pretty similar.

After that, I recommend:
- Renaming the files to have integrated timestamps (if they don't already—makes maintaining multiple versions of backups easier)
- Renaming the files to include the instance domain (if they don't already—important if you have accounts on multiple instances)
- Backing the files up in a few places. Don't just leave them on a single hard drive, where they can be lost as surely and easily as if you hadn't downloaded them at all.

If your instance should go down, this is essentially a checkpoint, a save point, so you don't lose everything.

With the new year soon approaching, I highly recommend that *everybody* take this reminder, this opportunity, and backup your fedi account(s).

Do it today.
Do it right now if you can.
Don't put it off.

And if you just did it... maybe do it again anyway, because doing it regularly is a good habit to get into.

If you don't know how, read this as a starting point: @pockets@lgbtqia.space

@tlariv I've worked with people in the past who are native speakers, but never mastered the ability to write well. Just having a tool capable of taking the words that they type and outputting a professional-sounding block of text that means exactly the same thing but sounds less like an easily ignored uneducated person has been a game changer for them. They're not stupid, they just can't write pretty. I only wish the tool came with less baggage and controversy.

@An0n But it's not supposed to guide it down, it's supposed to keep it up. "A guy-wire, guy-line, guy-rope, down guy, or stay, also called simply a guy..." (first line of wiki article). Stay makes more sense, but then I can't get a gender joke out of it, just a petplay joke.

@An0n Supposedly it's from a Dutch word, "gei" which means "brail" which is a particular sailing line. So guyline is lineline, I guess?

Edit:
Answered as far as being possible, though power draw feasibility is still uncertain.

Thanks y'all!

--
My current car has an engine block heater, which I love. Leave it plugged in overnight, and in the morning the engine warms up nice and quick in winter.

Except the plug (which to my non-expert eye looks like a standard NEMA 5-15P) comes out the front grill of the car. That's ideal in my current situation, where I'm plugging it into an extension cord that's plugged into the grid.

But I'm working on a utility van/vanlife plan right now for my next vehicle, where the nearest and most convenient power source will be onboard. This leads to my question:

Is it possible to install an engine block heater such that the plug exits into the passenger compartment (inside the vehicle), preferably without having to run an extension cord around/under the exterior?

(I'm not looking for the engine block heater to be plugged into the car's fusebox/battery. I'd just like to plug it into the independent electrical system I install inside the van.)

(I know very little about cars and even less about engines, but I'm trying to rectify that. Also, I've tried looking this up online and have come up empty, though maybe I'm not wording it correctly. If AskFedi doesn't answer it, I'll probably have to call a service centre directly and ask.)
