@charlesdelavalleepoussin@mastodon.social @pixelpusher220@dmv.community @Ruth_Mottram@fediscience.org I can't see a good reason for the parts being so expensive - each part *really* cost what it does as a replacement, the cars would be unaffordable. It just looks like the manufacturers charging stupid sums because they are the only source for the parts, so they can. Time for some regulation?

@TrVr@mastodon.green if the car is plugged in at the appropriate times, it just turns the charging on and off at the appropriate times. If the car isn't plugged in, #HomeAssistamt will give me a reminder on my phone in advance (i.e. when the car arrives home, it will ping a reminder to plug in if charging is expected within the next 12 hours)

@TrVr@mastodon.green I have a python script that I wrote to schedule car charging - I have a calendar which contains events for periods when the car will be in use and the expected amount of battery those trips will use (these are basically just repeating events for our normal weekly use), and the script uses the calendar and data from AgilePredict to decide the cheapest times to charge over the next 2 weeks, whilst maintaining the state of charge needed for our normal use. I should really blog about it.

@mergesort@macaw.social An important point I think: I like being in control of my own life, BUT I don't trust that putting other people to be in complete control of their own lives won't negatively impact me. So although I want no guardrails for me, I need to accept guardrails in order to protect me from other people. (E.g. I want my speech to be free, but I also don't want other people to be allowed to misdirect discourse by spreading misinformation, so maybe I need to accept some limits on free speech)

@dansup@mastodon.social Well, it might do. Safety and privacy are not the same thing - absolute privacy means it isn't possible to scan traffic for viruses, malicious communications, spam, etc. Now, I don't particularly want governments to be able to spy on me, but I do want to be able to designate a trusted agent to scan my communications for me and filter out stuff I don't want.

Argh, filling in a #PDF form with Evince. I accidentally tick a radio button that I shouldn't have ticked. I now cannot untick it. Okular seems to have the same problem. (The form has clearly been authored wrong, since it has 2 separate radio button groups where there should be one, leading to the possibility of having 2 buttons ticked at the same time, but really, I don't want to have to re-fill in the entire form just because nothing will let me undo the selection!)

@bloor@bloor.tw @nf3xn@mastodon.social I think the difference is that small companies built on a reputation of good support need to... provide good support. Big companies are built on a reputation of being big, and don't care if they lose a few customers because they are big enough that it doesn't matter to them.

I've got some little 42×42×22mm #zigbee modules that I want to install in the ceiling above light fittings. Unfortunately, they have exposed screw terminals and I can't seem to find any suitable enclosures to put them in... Not helped by the fact that absolutely no bugger seems to quote internal dimensions for enclosures. I was thinking something like one of the Wago boxes that you can post through the hole in the ceiling, but they appear to be slightly too narrow :(

@bloor@bloor.tw ISTR you have/had plug-in solar? Can I ask if you know why sticking generation on the "consumption" side of an RCD is safe? I've been trying to figure it out, and can't understand why the RCD wouldn't be (partially) defeated if (part of) your power isn't being supplied through the RCD?

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us This basically came about because all the chest-thumping "patriots" said "we're *British*, so they *have* to give us what we want" - they thought that we could make the EU give us all the benefits without the downsides of EU membership. e.g. single market without free movement. And then (surprise!) it turned out not to be true. No one wanted to leave the single market - this was explicitly advertised as something we wouldn't do.

@hedders@mas.to @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk Oddly enough, my solicitor is getting repeat business, because they were _very_ good (when the buyer's solicitor was being crap) in 2007. Anyway, they won't be getting any more repeat business, and I will also be avoiding the seller's solicitor!

Repeat business aside, I imagine they work a lot on recommendations, which they also won't be getting from me...

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk Yes, I think every time I have had conveyancing done, I have received documents after completion that I probably should have been given long before exchange! I guess it's fixed-fee, so it is in their interest to do as little as possible, as quickly as they can... (And of course you're at the mercy of at least 2 conveyancers - your's and the other party's, and that's if you're not in a chain with umpteen other people!)

* No notification of the increase - it was just included in the completion statement without comment. I have obviously questioned it!

* They started work 11 months ago, but every time they have needed something from the seller's solicitor they have got no reply until (some months down the line) I kicked the vendor, who threatened their solicitor. (This cycle has happened multiple times, which is why it has taken almost a year for a simple transaction!)

#Solicitors' fees... We received and accepted a conveyancing quote 11 months ago. Other party's solicitor has been crap, so we are only just about to complete. Our solicitor has increased our costs by an inflationary amount and added some fees that weren't in the original quote. (Note, although the quote says "quotation", the T&Cs say "you have received an estimate", which doesn't seem right?) Anyway, is this reasonable behaviour from our solicitor?

@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk yes, but as I said, for such a small form factor, I'm not sure there are many more efficiency gains to be had, so it seems somewhat counterproductive to consider G4 LED bulbs to be a similar rating to halogens that use 10x the power...

@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk well, of you look at 1.2W G4 bulbs, they are all 120-135lm, so doesn't look like there is much scope for efficiency improvements in such a small form factor, if you ask me.

No, found an LED bulb with rating G... None of it makes sense.. I will say that the price range is insane though. G4 LED bulbs seem to go for 5 quid or more *each* on the high street, which is rather too much when you have 2 light fittings in one room, which each take 5 bulbs. They are £5-10 for a pack of 10 on Amazon.

@killyourfm@layer8.space a journalist fabricating quotes in their article should be fired immediately. And yes, that includes journalists that use a bullshit generator (AI) without checking it hasn't generated bullshit. Especially where the editorial policy is that AI must not be used. Disappointed that this retraction doesn't say that the journo in question was fired, so agree that it is hard to trust them now.

@bloor@bloor.tw earth pin should not be sleeved (dangerous - means the appliance won't be earthed). The plug dimensions are wrong and may allow fingers to touch contacts (dangerous), almost certainly does not have a fuse, despite saying "fused" (dangerous)... But really, would you trust that it was actually fused when it fails to meet the BS in so many other ways? Also would not be surprised if it used undersized copper plated aluminium wire.

@vikki@know.me.uk @tobyjaffey@mastodon.me.uk Well, also they have public outcry to deal with: essentially, their only tool against foreign social media companies is to order ISPs to block them. Can you imagine the public's reaction if a very big service was suddenly unavailable (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Google, Microsoft)? Banning such big services is basically the nuclear option - totally impossible to get away with, but also there is nothing else that can be done.

@revk@toot.me.uk There is apparently quite a problem with CAPTCHAs asking people to identify things that they don't have in their culture, because Google thinks everyone is American. e.g. this is a fire hydrant: https://www.wessexwater.co.uk/media/w4lpjaff/fire-hydrant.jpg Not this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5a/Downtown_Charlottesville_fire_hydrant.jpg/960px-Downtown_Charlottesville_fire_hydrant.jpg Thanks to American TV, most people can probably identify a fire hydrant, but CAPTCHAs ask people to identify American things that are not so well known internationally.
