Meandering along, enjoying the journey. Trying to boost thoughtfully, post occasionally, and only reply when it seems like a good idea.

I love volunteering at a local charity shop where I get to mess around with a whole lot of books. I enjoy reading dystopian fiction much more than living it.

@UnconventionalEmma@wandering.shop With my mum, presents were a whole thing for quite a few years - she'd buy the kids presents every time they came, and then got offended when they were more interested in going off and playing with their cousins. Christmas was even worse, and became a whole ordeal that we had to get through each year, until we started doing Christmas day at home as a family, then seeing people over the Christmas period. For the last few years, we haven't done Christmas presents. My in-laws still do presents, but it's not a whole big thing, and it's never been an issue.

RE: https://mastodonapp.uk/@HollieK72/109886899680674679 I've been taking note of my Health and Wellbeing for the last three years, and slowly making changes to my diet and lifestyle so that it's reasonably healthy. I know I'm in relatively good condition from the NHS health check I had back in November, but I'm aware that my cholesterol level was starting to creep over the high end of the normal range, and over the last year it has been more difficult to lose weight, and seemingly much easier to put it on. So I want to deal with those issues whilst they are still relatively small and fairly easy to manage. I've made a lot of progress since February 2023, but still have further to go.

Yesterday I really wanted a cheese sandwich, despite knowing that it would trash my saturated fat stats for the day. It was lovely, but two slices of bread, margarine, and 93g of cheddar cheese came in at 650 kcals, and a huge 22.3 g of saturated fat - daily limit for women is 20g. It was great for calcium levels - at 777mg, and explains why I used to rely on cheese as a good source of calcium. That was before I started to worry about cholesterol, though. #HK72Posts

Monday's book donations were fairly typical in volume, but heavily skewed towards books needing to be ragged and books to go to the warehouse as donations. We kept 96 books for processing, and sent 154 books to the warehouse as donations, and 181 books for ragging. It took most of the afternoon to sort through all of them, and it was irritating that people had donated over 180 books that were in poor enough condition that the best outcome is that we can get a few pence per kilo for them as ragged books, rather than going into the bin and costing money to dispose of - which is what might happen to some of them. #CharityShopLife #HK72Posts

The boxes of books to go to the warehouse were collected last Thursday, so by Monday we were back to normal with book donations, and donations in general. We had just over 50 boxes and bags donated on Monday, which is par for the course. Over the course of a week, we probably get at least 300-350 donations in, which is why we can get clogged up at time, and can't take any more in. When we're that full, we can't "just store it somewhere," because we have already used up all our storage space. We do try to limit the amount of time that we aren't taking in donations, but it is something that happens. #CharityShopLife #HK72Posts

I'm still going to use the app, as I primarily use it to track weight, calories, calcium, saturated fat, and salt, and draw my own conclusions from the results. However, I think it is disingenuous and unhelpful about weight management - it subtly suggests you can eat more than you should, although it claims not to.

Now that I've reached the weight that I want to be, I'm looking at maintaining it. I'm using an app because I'm trying to track several metrics. When I was losing weight, the app worked well, not so much for maintaining weight. It overestimates the amount of calories needed for different levels of activity: Sedentary - 1899 kcal, Low Active 30-60 mins moderate activities - 2062 kcal, Active 60-120 mins moderate activities - 2199 kcal, Very Active 120+ mins moderate activity - 2433 kcal. Whereas an online Basal Metabolic calculator has lower amounts: Little to no exercise - 1488 kcal Light exercise 1-3 times per week - 1705 kcal Moderate exercise 3-5 times per week - 1922 kcal Heavy physical exercise 5-6 times per week - 2139 kcal Heavy physical exercise 6-7 times per week - 2357 kcal I think this is intentional, so you become reliant on the app. I do moderate exercise, so have had to put the app level as Sedentary to get the right level of maintenance calories. #HK72Posts

@alterelefant@mastodontech.de @berniethewordsmith@neopaquita.es Also, if the "just ok" books are being shat out at several times the rate of actual proper books that have been written by an actual writer, then they become a fire hose that drowns out the good books. It's not just romance, either. I came to the unpleasant realisation that I've recently read some psychological thrillers that are very probably AI-generated, with varying degrees of "author" edits to make them readable. Some of them were ok, with elements that didn't seem to work that well, one degenerated into an unholy mess for the last 20% of the "novel." I don't know exactly how many AI books I've read, as a lot of it comes down to the rate of publication being too high, and that can be hidden by the use of pseudonyms, or using different publishers. I don't really want to read books that people haven't bothered to write, either fully or in part, but it's going to become more difficult to do that.

@Schafstelze@don.linxx.net @inthehands@hachyderm.io So when do they become "Concentration Camps"? Even the Nazi system started small and was built up over a number of years: "The Nazi regime set up its first concentration camp in Dachau in March 1933, barely two months after Hitler’s rise to power. Between 1933 and 1945, Germans built an extensive system of more than 44,000 camps and other incarceration sites (including ghettos), aiming to imprison and kill “enemies of the state”, which included Jews, Roma and Sinti, Jehovah’s Witnesses, German Communists, Socialists, and homosexuals." https://www.lbi.org/exhibitions/virtual-exhibition-last-stop-before-the-last-stop/concentration-camps-existed-long-before-hitler-came-to-power/

Meandering along, enjoying the journey. Trying to boost thoughtfully, post occasionally, and only reply when it seems like a good idea. I love volunteering at a local charity shop where I get to mess around with a whole lot of books. I enjoy reading dystopian fiction much more than living it.

@cmconseils@mastodon.social You were lucky to escape. If you'd seen a fallen tree blocking the road, you'd have had to go into the town and would have never been able to get back out again. https://www.distractify.com/p/from-season-1-recap

@ravenbait@mastodon.scot @cstross@wandering.shop @nathanael@exquisite.social @ploum@mamot.fr In this context, the huge resource-demanding data centres make sense: they use all the resources for questionable outputs, and people have nothing left for themselves.

@nathanael@exquisite.social @ploum@mamot.fr @cstross@wandering.shop Those are merely rich people, and not ultra-rich people. In the eyes of the ultra-rich, those you see as rich are actually poor.

@cstross@wandering.shop @nathanael@exquisite.social @ploum@mamot.fr They're scared that if "poor" was to "have one euro less in their wallet," that the poor will overtake them, and they will become the poor. They don't want any more competitors in the rich stakes. What gets me is that they seem to want to see starvation, misery, and death on all sides, but also want to be universally loved and worshipped. If they solved poverty, by giving up on a few of their billions, they would be hailed as saviours, but they can't do that.
