@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social every single one of those shitbags has proclaimed, at some time or another in their lives, that you could take away all their money and give them a hundred bucks (or even a dollar!) and dump them somewhere, and they'd make that money back in a year or two. It's just what they're good at, according to Elon and Marc and Jack and Jeff and Paul etc. They "grow wealth"! Yet somehow taxation crushes all their hopes and makes life impossible. Why don't they just work a little harder to make up for it? They say they're hard workers and value the "work ethic" after all.

@whybird @MissConstrue @Cetraria it must be down to sheer determination not to starve; that's all I can think of. sometimes I've seen attempts to invoke plausible accidents to explain how various peoples figured out that it was good to (say) soak something before eating it—maybe some poisonous thing accidentally got doused in water! and then they tried to eat it!
And I'm also reminded of the guy (oh I can't remember his name, Colonel someone I wanna say) who's credited for tasting so many different wild mushrooms. He lived to a ripe old age, died in his bed so far as I recall, and yet he survived putting all sorts of horrible things into his stomach. That's...probably a trait that's always been common to humanity, I would guess, being willing to eat anything.

@mcnado That's an excellent point, and I regard this sort of political decision as circumstantial evidence of the peculiar fanaticism at work with the issue of abortion. It's a cult idol and it connects up weirdly with a lot of other central obsessions of the Christofascist crowd. They link it to their grotesque love-hate relationship with slavery for one thing, through some tortured legalistic justification that I can't be bothered to look up.
I think they're fundamentally terrified of aborting Second Jesus. it's a trope of Catholic horror (especially "The Omen" series, which is also explicitly "Christian Zionist") and I think it's a ludicrous fear. I mean...an omnipotent god being foiled by a terminated pregnancy? What sort of half-assed miracle needs protection from mortal medical procedures?

@potterybyosa I only learned about this aspect of Carver's work a couple weeks ago. I have long known about his work on turning plant feedstock into plastics, but I didn't know that he was a painter, or that making his own pigments was one of his earliest achievements! He's an inspiration.
