No one special. Transplanted “citiot” living in the country. Looking for peace. Never lost my idealistic inner child, hope for humanity

Interested in pretty much everything to some degree, but love animals, nature, geology, photography, travel, art, music, and medical research. I’m curious, so I ask a lot of questions.

Everyone acts like Mark Carney is the brilliant saviour, bringing his central banking knowledge back to Canada to save our economy. But what is forgotten in that statement is that Canada had a pretty good economy before Globalization. Globalization was built on the premise that corporations (an d countries) could only survive if they continued growing every year. You don't have to tell a kid with a bag of halloween candy that a plan like that isn't sustainable. Or maybe you do have to tell a kid, but you don't need to be a central banker to know that resources are needed for never ending growth and those resources are limited on a relatively little blue ball floating out in space.

But way back, when they were talking free trade and globalization in Canada, there was a party that looked down the road and predicted 2026. They saw how it would create inequalities, how it would impact climate and communities, how it would hurt us in the long run.

That party was the NDP. The party of universal healthcare.

Met a 98 year old today and asked him what he thought his secret to longevity was. his answer?

2 beers a day. Sometimes he doesn’t finish them both, but he still enjoys them. Always did.

@auxonic@ottawa.place I will never be able to afford this. If my parents didn't have a generous pension to rely on, we would be hooped. I didn't put them on a waiting list for long term care because they could afford to pay and I didn't want to take spots from people who couldn't. Now I wonder how long they'll be able to cover it, if they keep this up.

@pearlrotter@mstdn.ca Given the track record of these two imperialistic fascists, I think anyone who supports this without considering next week, next month or next year is an absolute fool. The UN needs to abolish the security council vetos.

A refresher on how tariffs actually work.

When a country charges a tariff, it applies to the goods crossing the border into the country. Tariffs are collected from the people receiving the goods. Most imports are by corporations, so they pay the tariff and then pass the cost onto their customers either as surcharges or by raising prices.

Why do foreign countries not like tariffs? Because when the cost of their goods goes up, they sell fewer of them, but tariffs don't "cost" them anything but lost sales.

Tariffs work when they are applied stragically against dumping, which is the selling of goods below cost in order to corner a market and drive out competition.

Tariffs do not work when they are applied across the board. That just causes inflation, job losses and bankruptcies.

Anyone cheering on Trump's tariffs either does not understand how they work, or is actively engaged in the deliberate destruction of the US economy for personal gain.

A friend, who is an expert on the North was contacted by the NYT who was planning an article supporting the US position on Greenland.

She spent the entire interview educating the reporter on Greenland and why the US was out of line and then told them to ask their editor some questions.

The article has not been published.

Don't think your pushback doesn't matter.

“Vengeance, in my view, is a better way to get over it. There should be punishment; there should be low blows in the form of releasing dirt to show other fairweather caucus members that betrayal comes with consequences. ”

So there’s dirt on conservative MPs that should be used to threaten them. How GOP of you. The party of blackmail. How American. How EPSTEIN.

So, I once lived on a billionaires’ island. I have been thinking of writing a book about it for years.

It struck me that it was probably what informed my understanding of the world for the last 2 decades. I just always thought that no one would care, like no one cared about the Haitian boat people who often ended up drowned in their waters.

Witnessing the stark contrast between those two groups and how not one of the many, many, many people who profited off their misery in the form of cheap labour with no rights did anything to help them. I love dogs, but there was more compassion for the feral dogs than the black people who built their palaces.

It’s important to note that there were a lot of Canadians there who were not exactly the best of us.

It isn’t a great story, but I still feel that people need to know and think about when choosing their vacation destinations.

So Andrew has been arrested. Interesting that he is in trouble for sharing corporate information and not for his abuse of young girls.

Les Wexnercwas never even spoken to by the FBI even though he was alleged to have committed crimes against women.

If the victims want justice, it is becoming clear that the only way to achieve that is to report on their business related crime. You might actually get some results. Not guaranteed.

I hate the paternalistic world that treats crimes against women and children as inconsequential

This is so important because it exactly at the heart of the world’s problems.

Everything about fascism and authoritarianism is about class. They have spent decades sucking every last cent out of the 99% and exploiting divisions based on religion, race, gender and even attacking refugees, the homeless and the weak who are sick, elderly and children.

Fuck the #EpsteinClass they want us dead.

@cass_m@mstdn.ca Yes, thanks, "since" is a much better word. While those treaties were being negotiated, First Nations and Inuit peoples were not allowed to hire lawyers. Now, not only can they hire lawyers, they are becoming lawyers and representing themselves. I don't think the separatists know their neighbours very well. The only ones they know are the Americans who have a different take on history.

The only people who are dumber than him are all of those who believed him, bought his crap or invested in him. He is of the exact same ilk as Trump. A big mouth and zero substance. .@idahobucks@mastodon.social @newsopinionsandviews@mastodon.social I remember that story back in 2016 and I remember that the case was withdrawn because the victim was threatened and I remember how the whole world just said, okay and moved on. I remember thinking, wow. She was so brave coming forward and then no one had her back, the “no one” being the “authorities”. The FBI cleared out Epstein’s videos back in 2007 and then they disappeared. They have been covering up for 20 years at least now. Trump’s FBI is just the latest chapter. What happened to Maria? Did ANYONE ever investigate the allegations she was murdered? These were KIDS. What FUCKING FBI ignored that?

@totalclaireity@toot.lgbt You missed the one where if the authorities are advising you stay off the roads, stay off the roads! I do a lot more winter driving than I would like and I keep my car well maintained, with fluids checked and topped up regularly, but during the first snowstorm this season, there was an accident that shut down the highway and the detours ended up being impassable because even the snowplows were not able to see the road to clear them. One local guy on his way home from work got stuck in the closure zone and it took him 8 hours to get home. When you decide to drive in whiteout conditions you put others at risk too.

@Grovewest@mstdn.social @Su_G@aus.social @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social @mattblaze@federate.social The child sex trafficking, while vile and repugnant is not the main element of this story. What is known is that Epstein and Trump held parties, gave men access to young girls and then recorded them. The blackmail is the key to unlocking it all. It is why security clearances look at whether you are subject to blackmail because it is so easy to get people to do your bidding when you have something on them. That’s why the names of everyone who was involved must be made public, apart from the victims of course.

@jfmezei@mstdn.ca The old Quebec Ontario line through Kaladar went to Toronto and Ottawa and then to Montreal. There was passenger service until the 80s when they pulled out. It is now part of the Trans Canada trail. I live here. I actually KNOW. It was a vital lifeline for Frontenac. When they shut it down because the city people weren’t using it, people who relied on the train for jobs in Oshawa- they had to move creating ghost towns and decimating the economy because who cares about rural people? Liberals, leftists can be huge hypocrites too. This is exactly the kind of response I got when I warned about the Ottawa LRT.

@larsmb@mastodon.online The perpetrators of the executions have been masked. How does anyone know they aren't being rewarded by a paid trip to the Olympics? Until they are identified and investigated, ALL ICE could be them. Would you let a suspected murderer into your country? I don't think the US would, unless they're a paid friend of Trump's.

Bessent, threatening Carney... "when you're negotiating with an economy that is multiples larger than you are and your biggest trading partner." missing from that statement is "trusted" and "reliable". Canadians are not stupid. Canadian business owners large and small know that a partner that threatens you, doesn't pay their bills, takes you to court to bully you and then attacks you is not a good business plan. Sorry if we're a bit risk averse, but your "multiple times larger" economy is on a fast track to shrinkage that will match the size of the orangeman's mushroom. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/us-treasury-secretary-scott-bessent-mark-carney-9.7064976?utm_source=flipboard&utm_medium=activitypub

I’m curious, so I ask a lot of questions.

Whoa... People on LinkedIn are starting to speak up and it is very revealing. Canada has a whole industry of "experts" who do buisiness with the American military who are as scared and brainwashed as the incels killing people in Minneapolis. I recently learned that during WWII, Canada had to send a special representative to Washington to oversee the use and deployment of Canadian resources that were being contributed to their war machine. The corruption was so bad, even back then, that we needed to provide oversight to ensure it went to the right place. Do we think that has gotten any better? Have we forgotten the diverted Covid supplies that Kushner got ahold of? The entire premise of their power ignores their biggest weakness. They are greedy. Insatiably greedy.

@Nonilex@masto.ai "That was a mechanism to remove people from our country" there is always a shred of truth in what they say. All a big show for the cameras.

@CanadianPolling@mstdn.ca I see this and I wonder who the nearly 4 out of 10 are who would still consider giving their vote to a party with deep connections to the fascists in the oxytocin lab to our South.
